Mk3 Towbar Electrics, Converter Needed?

Someone just told me I may need a converter to wire in my towbar electrics.

Something to do with the "intelligent" lights

Any ideas about this?

Think they're talking about a multiplex

Believe it may be Canbus he was talking about

Does the MK3(2006 Ghia) have it?

I just went out, disconnected the rear cluster and put the ignition on:===no warnings about lights

Does this mean I don't have it?

Jim I always fit a bypass relay, for a few reasons. Firstly it means whatever your towing is not putting any extra load on any lighting circuits but most importantly it means you have the buzzer that is required to be fitted.

You could also fit a lamp on the dash if you wanted instead of a buzzer but you need one of them. I find fitting the relays the best option for little extra cost. They are very simple to wire up and the mondeo also has a 15A supply already in the boot to power it.

Is the bypass relay for the 2nd socket? I'm only fitting a single skt to start with.

PS where is the 15a supply in the boot. That would make wiring twin electrics much easier

No the bypass relay is for your single electrics - your indicators, brakes lights etc

It lurking behind one of the carpets, on the passenger side iirc. It has a connector on it though so you will need to chop it off. You will also need to fit a fuse to make it live. I can't remember which fuse it is though

For the twin electrics where you can charge the caravan battery you will need a split charging system.. A little more complicated than single electrics

Ok thanks. So it already has a bypass fitted? In the boot? Sorry for the basic questions but these cars are new to me

It's behind the carpet in the boot on the passenger side. I just lifted it from underneath

OK, here's my boot with the wheel well cover lifted and the side matting removed

Could mine be different? No voltage on either the blue/green or the black. Did check fuses and both trailer ones are missing

OK, got some 30A cable and a splashproof inline fuseholder so I'll just run it from the battery to the boot.

Already a good earth there

Thanks for the help again :)

Hmm strange, I thought all mk3s had a 15A supply.

30A cable is a bit over kill but you shouldnt see much of a volt drop anyway lol.
