Stoney871
With regards to the usb/aux plugs I discussed earlier I have a bit of an update. I got one of the plugs, a mini usb to standard usb adaptor and a usb male to female extension cable (about 30cm long) and tested them for functionality in my car. Connecting the bits up and plugging into my existing front power socket (mine being a mk2) I have proven to myself that adequate power is supplied to the usb socket on the blanking plug to facilitate charging of phones/sat nav/dash cameras etc. I will at some point soon be fitting this Heath Robinson affair and will then provide some pictures/parts etc. Obviously the usb will only supply power and no data connection will be involved. I won't initially connect up the aux socket on it as I have mine routed through to the armrest area where it serves me better although I may make a double connection as and when the mood takes me. I would like to go down that same route although at the moment with a bit of a location alteration I might end up ordering something that gets sent to my current location long after I'm gone, so all things have to go on hold sadly. Stoney871
As soon as I get a bit of time I'll try and do a final fit and then get piccies done. I just wanted to ensure that adequate power came through first or it would have been a wasted effort to fit permanently. Sent from my SM-G900F using Ford OC mobile app In my focus I've fitted a couple 12v sockets, well, 1 extra.. it is running off the same lines as the original, just spliced into it.. I'm not really knowledgeable with electrics so I don't really know what I'm doing... but IF I added ANOTHER 12v socket to the same wires, would I be able to use all three at the same time, say to charge 3 phones? Or would this put too much strain on...the original wires? The fuse? etc?
Stoney871
I have 3 sockets on my console- original front cubby one and centre & rear ones as standard on a mk2.5 console (unless a keyless start button is fitted in the first one). Tbh I haven't run all 3 under load but seeing as most phones charge at about 5volts and 2Amps running a couple at the same time should be ok without overloading the circuit. Best option is probably a plug in usb socket with twin outputs. Sent from my SM-G900F using Ford OC mobile app
south_bound
IMAG0066.jpg Sorry for the delay have had problems with my internet. All I have done is plug in a lead into the glove compartment. How did you get the cable out of the glove box to behind the centre console? Is there already a hole or did you need to drill one? In my focus I've fitted a couple 12v sockets, well, 1 extra.. it is running off the same lines as the original, just spliced into it.. Just wondering how you spliced into the original socket cable - I had a look at mine this evening (Mk 2 si the existing socket is in the centre console) and the orange cable has a push fit connector to the back of the socket outlet. Its all a tight to get my hands in to pull out the connector so before I do so, is this theway you did it or stright into the cable without undoing anything? The route to the armrest looks clear enough and there looks to be enough depth to add a couple of new outlets on the back of the armrest as per my picture in the other post.
Stoney871
I used these myself- http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=130873525986&alt=web The plug and socket match the corresponding oem connectors exactly. The route to the armrest looks clear enough and there looks to be enough depth to add a couple of new outlets on the back of the armrest as per my picture in the other post. Well, actually, what I said was not entiiiiiirely true.... I have a Mk2 but there are a couple of things I've added. Firstly I added a cubby door thing: (Not mine but my example).. Mine is just an empty case inside with the door (some have a 12v socket) - So when I fitted it it blocks the 12v socket behind... At the same time I also purchased a Mk2.5 centre console (again not mine): As you can see by the hole where the gear stick would be there is another 12v socket. The one I bought didn't have the 12v socket there - just the hole, but it DID have the loom. So I cut the connectors to the original 12v used wire crimping things to link the original wires to the centre console wires, then plugged it all back in... so very very crudely done, but now my 12v sockets are in the centre console and inside the armrest.. Planning on hard wiring my new dashcam as well as following the soon to be guide by Clive for the USB socket - so I'm hoping having an extra couple bits doesn't draw too much. ..sorry if that's all a bit complicated/confusing.. Wire crimp things like the ones I used: <a data-ipb="nomediaparse" data-cke-saved-href="http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100x-Insulated-Straight-Wire-Butt-Connector-Electrical-Crimp-Terminals-Cu3-/121234452237?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Terminals_Cabling_ET&hash=item1c3a22ef0d%20-%20USELESS!%20I" href="http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100x-Insulated-Straight-Wire-Butt-Connector-Electrical-Crimp-Terminals-Cu3-/121234452237?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Terminals_Cabling_ET&hash=item1c3a22ef0d%20-%20USELESS!%20I" ll%20do%20something%20better%20once%20i%20have%20more%20time."="">http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100x-Insulated-Straight-Wire-Butt-Connector-Electrical-Crimp-Terminals-Cu3-/121234452237?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Terminals_Cabling_ET&hash=item1c3a22ef0d They're USELESS really..! ChrisH
Stoney... thanks for checking this isb/aux socket. I sent 2 messages to the seller and got no reply. I wanted to make sure that it did what it said on the tin.... have you by any chance tried the aux connection and if so what is the sound quality like. I will likely get one of these and use for the aux connection first, it would look much more oem. Connector is currently poking out of cubby
Stoney871
I haven't checked the aux through it yet but seeing as technically it's just a twin female connector mounted into the block I can't see the sound quality being adversely affected. I will test it on my existing aux cable tonight and report back though. Sent from my SM-G900F using Ford OC mobile app
Stoney871
Aux works fine through the block. No sign of distortion or loss of sound quality. Sent from my SM-G900F using Ford OC mobile app
yunii
I'm liking this conversion. I have a mk2.5 titanium & have 2 blank switches as 2 are screen & 2 at each of blanks are heated seats. I would like to use blanks for 3.5mm & a usb for charging, as i have push button engine start so power outlet is in armrest.i have currently 2 charging points 1 in armrest & other is recently modified in boot.ive noted that i have a small 2 wire orange plug behind radio for would be powrr plug cig lighter in ash tray compartment. How wiuld i go abouts ? Even though aux is in glovebox i would like it exposed .chosen place is blank switch in centre. & other 3.5mm in the other blank switch. Also i was considering to buy the the switch from china with usb & 3.5mm aux. But this doesnt fit in my sony 6cd dab radio. Any hints / tips apeeciated. Stoney871
If you have the 12v connector in behind the dash just fit a Ford 12v socket and do as I'm intending. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Focus-MK1-98-04-Cigarette-Lighter-12V-Accessory-Socket-/121407619468?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c4475418c Remove the illuminated ring from the socket and just use the metal part. No need to attach it to anything if you don't feel inclined to do so, Plug in a usb adaptor and wire the usb blanking plate directly to it. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-12V-UNIVERSAL-CAR-CIGAR-SOCKET-LIGHTER-CHARGER-ADAPTER-IPHONE-SAMSUNG-NOKIA-/281241618031?pt=UK_MobilePhones_MobilePhoneAccessories_MobilePhoneChargers&hash=item417b4e866f The end of the usb cable on the blanking plug is a mini usb but adaptors are available, I have 2 spare ones if anyone needs one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-MALE-TO-MINI-5-PIN-FEMALE-USB-ADAPTER-CHARGER-CONVERTER-UK-/190860299503?pt=UK_Computing_USB_Cables&hash=item2c70290cef You should have enough length to reach from the socket with existing cabling from the blanking plug but I would recommend a USB extension cable to allow for easier fitting/routing of the cable, 30 cm is more than enough- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1FT-30CM-USB-2-0-A-male-plug-to-A-female-jack-extension-Cord-Leads-Wire-Cable-Ch-/261494623005?pt=UK_Computing_USB_Cables&hash=item3ce24b4b1d I strongly recommend covering the 12v socket with electrical tape to avoid shorting out on any metal parts as the external sleeve is the neutral contact. I would also recommend firmly taping up all joints between cables to avoid anything unplugging when being pulled/pushed about.

Stoney871
If you have a spare 12v supply wire behind the clutch pedal side panel where the MK2 would have had a socket (usually there) you can just plug in the 12v socket I linked to, plug an usb adaptor in, run an usb extension wire up behind the switch panel and using the adaptor I linked change a standard usb to a mini usb and plug the usb/aux blanking plug in. I haven't fitted mine yet but have all the relevant parts and on testing worked fine with enough power to charge a Galaxy Tab II with no problems, a phone or satnav will be no trouble to charge. I'll post up a photo of the layout of my adaptors etc later for you.
