I've got a fiesta st-2 MP215 and looking to upgrade the intercooler, I'm undecided whether to go airtec or mountune. Help appreciated

Is there much price difference? When I had my Focus ST a lot of people went down the airtec route as it was a lot cheaper. The mountune one used to be made by pro alloy though and came as part of the MP260 kit for about £1200

349 for airtec and 495 for mountune. Looking for a decent one cause I'm planning on running upto 250 maybe just over in the future, can they both handle those Bhp outputs

I'm not sure if anyone else knows the specs for the Fiesta version? I remember the Focus versions used to run to up to around 320 ish BHP but I imagine the Fiesta ones may be a different size?

I may give both companies a ring and ask for details cause they don't show much about outputs. I know the airtec stage 3 can take up to 400bhp as it's double stacked kind of thing. Cost 550ish though

Hmmm could be overkill if you're only going for around 250bhp! :P

Haha. I'll stick with a stage 1. Looked at turbo upgrades but there to dear for my budget. At least for the next year

The Mountune costs nearly £500 but it wont affect the warrantee -

http://www.mountunestore.com/Product/Alloy-Intercooler-Upgrade

The Aittec costs £350 in this ad but you will loose your warrantee -

http://www.autospecialists.co.uk/AIRTEC-Fiesta-ST180-Eco-Boost-front-mount-Intercooler-upgrade-Product-1210.html

the Airtec claims to be good for upto 250Hp (its meaningless, i fitted a "good for 400Hp" one on my (diesel) car - often these claims are made from the inlet/ outlet diameter) no claims are made over te power increase on either - you have to stop and think why?

In reality sticking either on in place of the original one will make very little difference to the power output (typically 2 to 5%- you need at least 10% increase to notice a difference ) unless you use it in conjunction with other mods like an "custom" remap, optomised for the upgraded intercooler, a boost pressure increase or a turbo upgrade

going much bigger on the intercooler can increase heat soak (depending on the design/ location of the intercooler) and the increased internal volume can increase turbo lag/ reduce throttle response and bottom end power - (the reduction in bottom end power can often make it seem there is more mid/top, even if it is just the same as before) so you have to be careful that the intercooler is matched to the engine/ setup

Its a lot of money for probably little power/ torque gain (without the other mods, as above) so can almost be considered a "cosmetic" upgrade (its about the only part of the engine visible with the bonnet closed) thats why its still a popular mod, but for those that want a bit of "bling" rather than serios power increases

It is known that fitting a Focus ST turbo can seriously increase the power of the Fiesta ST, with that fitted (along with a custom remap) it may be worth changing the intercooler but its debatable whether fitting one with your present state of tune is worth the hassle/ cost - another point is mabee the stock intercooler is good enough already?

These are the things i would consider before handing over my £500/£350 (seems a lot too - mine was a fraction of that)

I see what you mean. Good read by the way. I'm also planning a new exhaust system and the MR upgrade when it comes out or a revo stage 2. I know that both MR and revo will void warranty though

Many forum members have advised against voiding the warranty, but its your choice and something you need to weigh up, as the car gets older there is less and less of the warranty left (until it runs out)

+ if you decide to not bother with the warranty you could save money with other tuners rather than Mountune (that tends to be abit more expensive - like the intercoolers)

So if you plan to void the warranty anyway you could go for the Revo (look carefully at the difference in power/ cost between the MP215 MR(is the spec out yet?) and the Revo stage2 ) + other exhaust manufacturers + look on other forums to see what others have done and what they think

+ if you want to make your car that little bit more special (and quicker!) some sacrifices may have to be made (like the warranty)

Keep us posted and consider doing a "build thread" on here

PS - i looked at the Revo stage 2, its not going to be much difference on the car at the moment,(compared to the MP215) but the Revo has different maps to optomise it for different hardware, and with the turbo- back exhaust with sports cat, uprated intercooler and high-flow intercooler you could see upto 240Hp (allegedly)

I'll start a thread when I tot everything up and start ordering. In terms of the MR it's in production but I've been told by mountune it will include the intercooler, cat back exhaust and a new remap plus other bits they were reluctant to disclose. Apparently the MR doesn't keep the warrenty which Is why I looked into revo

Yes, you could have a similar spec to the MR (or even better) for a lot less money going for the revo + other hardware if you have to lose the warranty anyway - cue much debate about which is better! - ok the Mounture is quality stuff but i recon its a bit on the pricy side

My car has the Mountune Pro-alloy IC fitted, but if I had to uprate it or get a replacement I'd go for an Airtec. Their early Focus ST IC's were pretty rough looking but gen 3 onwards is a great looking piece of kit and their prices look very reasonable too.

How do people upgrade the Fiesta turbo with the Focus version bearing in mind the Focus ST turbo has the exhaust manifold integrated to the turbo housing casting?

I don't have the exact details but often the turbine is left stock and the compressor and housing is changed

its the turbine housing that is integrated into the exhaust manifold - not the compressor, which is seperate

Of course, a new, bespoke exhaust manifold could be fabricated (but that could become expensive)

I had a look online and came across this -

I read up on the Revo/Mountune debate on our local Ford forum and most of the SA guys go for the Revo simply because we don't get the Mountune kits or warrenties through the Ford dealers here in SA, So sins you going to loose the warrenty anyway, might as well go for the company with the best after sales service and in SA Revo is the one to have.

just wish Ford could wake up a bit and bring the Mountune kits to our country

Mountune is brilliant but other companies have produced bigger gains. I love my mountune but as the MR will loose warranty I think I'll look at revo like you say. Also the MR for fiesta is rumoured to only be 235
