Help A Newbie With First Modifications ?

Hi guys

Would you be kind enough to give any help into what I should be upgrading on my car, I'm thinking about getting a remap done but not for a few months. I basically want the car to have better acceleration, I have a 63 plate Focus zetec sport 2.0 TDCI 160BHP powershift. Once it's out of first gear it really shifts it just seems a little sluggish off a standing spot.

I would have a guess and say a new exhaust and good air filter are a must but have no idea what make is best. (I would not be fitting these myself) Any good web sites ?

Theres plenty to do but almost all will invalidate youre warranty if you still wish to go ahead forget induction kits get a green cotton or k&n filter fir it as for exhausts powerflow are a good make but it wont be cheap personally ide wait till the warranty runs out before doing any mods

+1 Don't give Ford an excuse to wriggle out of anything if you have any problems..

Yes I thought the warranty would be void like wise the insurance, would a new air filter and exhaust still invalidate the warranty, I know a remap would but would need to set it back to original map if anything happened.

Remap or something like Blue fin plug n go ?

2.5" cat back exhaust,

internally remove dpf,

Blank EGR valve with Stainless steel blanking plate

Green Cotton Performance Induction Filter (straight swap)

ECU remap

All should result in zero turbo lag, increased mpg, lower emissions and around 45bhp increase with loads of torque

Forget about warrenty its all about Power!!

they couldn't tell on my mk2.5 :lol: i was waiting hoping they would charge me for Eloy's fluid or try tell me my dpf needed unblocked as my dpf is just an empty chamber lol cowboys

Aren't footwell bulbs the first mod everyone does?

Seeing as it takes all of 2 minutes to fit them :p

Can't you now do something with the ECU to fool the system thinking the DPF is there ?

As I've said I'm new to all this, I've read that the removal of the DPF is illegal ? Would it not fail the emissions mot test ?

the MOT is visual inspection of the dpf,

You need to get the dpf cut open on the factory weld,

Hammer and chisel job removing dpf leaving catalistair inside,

Weld chamber back up on factory joint and refit to the car,

The ECU then gets remapped so theres no smoke or high emissions,

With dpf gone the exhaust gasses flow faster spinning the turbo faster reducing lag and increasing performance,

Along with egr blanking and induction filter you will see increased mpg,

The catalyst is still in the exhaust system to baffle the sound from the turbo so detecting dpf removal is impossible for MOT

Ive blanked egr, 2.5" cat back duplex exhaust, internally removed dpf, blanked egr, performance induction filter and ecu remapped passed my first ever MOT two weeks ago and my engine is a Euro 5 emissions vehicle :) 68.2MPG 35bhp over stock

Wow that's unreal MPG, I've only had mine 2 weeks but only had 2 days play as I'm on holiday at the minute. Mines showing 38 MPG, Stock says 52 but online it states real as 40.

I'm just cautious as it's still got 2 and 1/2 years warranty, not sure what to do, what can be done to make it quicker without voiding the warranty ?

You can always stick in white LED's so that it is literally just more lighting when you turn on the cabin light or open the doors. How many times have you dropped something at night in the car and had to fumble around trying to find it with only a dim cabin light and a phone to help...

blank the egr valve using a stainless steel blanking plate

Fit a green cotton performance induction filter (straight swap )see my guide for 10% discount

lowered suspension using ford supplied Eibach springs,

drive it in the same direction the wind blows

Or stay in the slip stream behind trucks reduces force on the car makes it faster,

Reduce weight join RAC or AA roadside assistance then ditch the spare wheel kit as they will repair on road side,

Take a dump prior to driving long journeys reduces unnecessary weight saving fuel :)

A remap or tuning box will make a big difference, exhaust will make a small difference, air filter will make little or no difference

simply sticking a tuning box on (without other mods) will increase the PS from 163 to 199, and the Nm from 340to 410 - DTUK -

its not cheap at about £300 but cannot be over-written like a map can and can be removed for services (dont know if its undetectable)

Or you could go with a Superchips remap

Its your choice whether you wish to void the warranty or not

Diesels can often be sluggish off the line, even powerful ones (copmpared to petrol cars)- its a mixture of (realatively) narrow powerband, low rev-limit, low gearing, and the power may be restricted in the lower gears to protect the trans etc etc

Saying that, as FOCA said a tuning box might be a decent interim thing.. If you take it into Ford surely you can remove it and then no one is any the wiser :D

A tuning box will give more performance but ultimately a remap is better

Tuning boxs fit to the fuel rail altering the flow rate,

Thats all they control, increased fuel rate.

An ecu remap alters fuel, boost parimeters and timing settings for a more tailored management which will increase mpg when you drive easy aswell as give you performance when you put the foot down,

But if your wanting to maintain warrenty tunimg box is the only way to go,

Just to save confusion it is amazing how many people talk about diesels and failing an emissions test, diesels are not tested for emissions only petrol cars are tested for emissions, diesels have a smoke test they have to pass this is not an emissions test but a smoke level test. Just one of my pet hates when people keep going on saying will my car fail an emissions test.

They tested a fake tuning box - this does not mean all tuning boxes are no use - i fitted a DTUK box to my mondeo diesel - it made a BIG difference and still has more bottom end grunt than my Superchips bluefin remap, (even after stage/ revision3)

Some tuning boxes are fakes (do nothing at all - like the one in the video) some are just resistors that fool the ECU that the engine is cold (IAT ones) - some connect to the fuel pressure rail sensor and up the fuel pressure -

But others are serious alternatives to remaps (often with the price tag to match) with multi user-selectable maps, multiple channels (some with direct control over boost) and can produce as much power as a remap,

Comparing a £7 "eBay resistor special" (it looks like a chip!) tuning box to a £400 digital tuning box is like comparing a model T to a 2014 ST - there is no comparison

I think for some, tuning boxes are an alternative to remaps, as they have some advantages

Thanks for the reply guys, I think the safest way to go is a tuning box then, I've still got 2 1/2 years warranty felt on the car and don't want to get anything done that could void it, I will check out the DTUK box and have a look around, anyone else got any recommendations ?
