Are you supposed to put an automatic into neutral and handbrake on at traffic lights?

I dont know bout automatics but i would think so to take it out of drive

If, by your question, you mean to say that you put the transmission into Neutral while waiting at a stop light, then this would not harm the transmission in any way.

Also it will not harm your transmission to shift into Neutral while your vehicle is in motion, the additional wear on your brakes by leaving the transmission in Drive will be negligible over the life of the brake pads. It is that minor.

I wouldn't think this would cause any wear on the pads because the car isn't moving. It's just that you'll be sat with your brake lights on like most people do which is annoying :P

Lol I should read posts more carefully, I even deleted that part when I quoted you :iim:

Although the vehicle in motion part was when shifting to neutral. I've confused myself now, I think they were talking about wear on brake pads when stationary in drive.

You should always put an auto into nuetral and put the handbrake on at lights. Same reason you should put a manual into nuetral with the handbrake on. If you get rear ended in gear there is nothing to stop the car travelling forwards if you cant keep your foot on the brake. Also it is never a good idea to leave your foot on the brake when its hot. In some cases the discs can warp especially after a fast drive with hard braking from high speeds. Also like leaving the cluch down in a manual, holding an auto in gear on the brake doesn't do the gear box any good.

That is what I thought, but have been told by others they only use neutral when they are parked just before putting the selector into park. The rest of the time it's in D, whether stopped at lights or junctions etc...
