Why Does The Ford Fusion Have Such An "elderly People" Image ?

Hi There,

I've been on several Ford Forum's on the internet, and there a still a lot of guys who tell me, that the Ford Fusion is the car for people over 60 or 70 years old, it seems to have an "elderly peoply' image problem. :o Why ? It's such a great car !!!

I'm not a youngster myself, but with my age of 42 I'm not that old

I have chosen this car because I like the model, you don't see it very often on the road, it has a lot of space which is practical for me and my family. I can take loads of stuff with me, even 2 kids bikes and a litte babycar in the trunk :)

The exterior of Fusion is not an example of "futuristic aerodynamics", but I think it looks like a small 4x4 SUV :D to me.

The sitting position is a bit higher than the average car, but this gives me a good overview on the road B)

My car has the (for a Fusion) very uncommon 1.4 TDCi-engine, and its very low on Diesel comsumption, which is also very nice for my wallet  I can drive 22 kms on 1 liter diesel. that is 52 miles/gallon, I'm so happy with our metric system

I will sent in some picture with this post, and it's up to you if you still you think this is an "old guys car" :P

A very good friend of mine also has the 1.4 TDCI - and couple that with his Grandpa (he is a Grandpa...late 50's and his wife loves me, so I can get away with saying it :D) driving style and you get a really economical little motor!

Best of all, he doesn't know when it was last serviced and when I checked his oil for him 18 months ago, it was like tar...told him he should get it changed...he hasn't lol

Poor thing is abused in every other way lol

I quite like it - but prefer the Focus

It's basically a Transit Connect with seats and the Connect is a cracking little wagon.

Thought it was an inflated Fiesta?

The connect is built on the Focus platform

Compare the fronts of a mk1 Connect and a Fusion, You'll see what I mean.

My dad has a fusion & I drive it quite a lot (I am only 37!) it is a cracking car, just a shame it's not made anymore.

Thanks for your responses, I'm happy that I'm not the only one who thinks different about the Fusion :)

Hi Rhys,

I see you have Window-shields on your front doors. Are they the same as a Fiesta or are they special made for a Fusion ? Maybe I want them to on my Fusion.

Rhys - are your wind deflectors Heko or Climair? Cheers.

People do see it as an 'elderly' car - I note if I am going a bit slowly other drivers are soon to notice and make a fuss!

I think it has an elderly image because it looks fairly utilitarian, not really designed to look stylish and it is more practical than a Ka.

I think the main reason these appeal to old people is the poor engine choice and the fairly 'bland' exterior styling. Same engines as the Fiesta but with the extra weight so pulls the economy and acceleration down (isn't it about 16 seconds to 60mph in the 1.4 diesel lol) and the tax up as well.

My mates ~60 year old Mum drives one and loves it though!

That said...you should drive what you want, forget the image it has! I've been driving old man cars since I was 19... :D

Like I said on another thread, I don't know why Ford didn't give it one of the uprated 1.6 engines with more power, or even the 1.8 as owner Rhys has mentioned.

though the replacement b-max can also be slow, I think the 1.5 diesel is 16-17 seconds to 60.

Thank you for all your responses.

I'm driving my Fusion now for about half a year and I'm very happy with it.

Especially the fuel consumption is very low, I can drive 20~22 kms on 1 liter of Diesel :)

My car has the 1.4 TDCi engine and is now 9 years old with 205.000 kms on it, and still driving very good :)

in January he needs his annual checkup, and I will give it an oil change also :) :)

I've noticed Fusion drivers stick together. I keep returning to my car in the car park and find another Fusion parked nearby in sympathy or solidarity! Today an identical one two spaces along and almost tried to unlock it...
