Supermarket Diesel = Hesitancy/hunting?

My source is probably 10 years out of date lol

I'm in Scarborough and it's always expensive compared to inland. Guess we pay extra for hauling it over to the east coast!!!

If it comes from Immingham, it's the Hull Road Tax that's the problem :p

(Humber Bridge Toll)

Speaking to an Esso station Manager about 2 years ago, his version was Tesco use Esso, Sainsbury's use Shell, Wada use BP & I can't remember what Morrison's was (possibly Conoco?). Lol, so we all have different versions basically.

Like I said, my source is about 10 years out of date. As for Conoco - they supply a lot of the fuel companies with refining services - it isn't unusual to see tankers from all of the big companies leaving the refineries. I can only guess that each load is drawn out of a different tank.

Don't know if it's still there, but there used to be a petrol station across the road from the refinery that I'm told was plumbed into it - no tanker deliveries for him lol

All I do know is that the difference between Shell and Asda was big enough for my Mum to pick up on - she asked me if I'd done any work on the car (other than a quick wash, no). I asked why she'd think that and she said that the car was quieter and smoother. It was almost as if the car literally grumbled when running on Asda fuel.

...and you have to be clear what you mean when you say 'oil major A supplies supermarket Z'.

For example (I am a bit vague on the details) I believe that Esso has more than enough refinery capacity in the South but not enough in the North of the UK and they've done a deal with someone else (BP?). What this means is that at one end of the country fuel from an Esso station is likely to come from an Esso refinery, and at the other end, it isn't. The reverse situation is true with the partner with whom they have done this deal.

So, if, for example, Supermarket A gets its fuel from Esso, that may well not be from Esso's own refinery capacity, depending on where in the country the supermarket outlet is. And additives will be the supermarket's own spec, rather than Esso's package of additives, unless the supermarket has chosen that, which they probably haven't.

Little bit of info on the big 7 UK refineries - Total apparently own/operate Lindsay and it's now Phillips 66 as opposed to Conoco Phillips (locally they're still known as LOR and Conoco respectively)

Hmmm, I'd never thought about this before. Just thought diesel is diesel. Oddly, I live within a few miles of the BP refinery at Grangemouth and BP fuel is the most expensive in the area. Might give it a go with Shell though.

That was really interesting, so thanks.

One thing that I didn't know was Murco had their own refinery. I'd taken them as one of those marginal suppliers who just trade on the open market and buy whatever they can get cheaply. Now, I might take them a bit more seriously, though the name still puts me off (A company that specialises in Murc? Not that attractive.)

Just to report running like a dream on Shell v nitro +!!!!

On another fuel related matter... Am I the only one who struggles putting fuel in my car with this new fangled petrol filler that doesn't have a cap??? ..... Cut off, cut off, cut off all the time..... Take ages to fill sometimes at 30p per squeeze with the eyes of other waiting motorists giving me evil stares behind me, because I'm taking so long!!!

I don't tend to suffer from that, it pumps fine until full. Not a dodgy pump? We have a couple around here, I call them munk pumps due to the cut off noise.

Mines the same got to get the filler in and hold it at the right angle for the same reason. It's still working for now lol

For me it depends on which petrol station I use (some are fine).... Also notice that the constant cutting off is often when I'm trying to fill up after a long run!

Yer probs because your tank is warm and the fumes or vapour off your fuel is escaping and the pump nozzle is recognising it as a full tank and cutting off the fuel supply

How about a Murco garage in Grimsby? (Grim by name...grim by nature)

Need to find the sweet spot and the right angle. I tend to have the handle at about the 5 o'clock position and pretty much let the nozzle rest in place. Not as bad as my old Punto (that was a nightmare...especially with Sainsbury's pumps).

If that doesn't work, have a look at the tank breather. If it isn't doing its job the back pressure cuts the pump. Was a known flaw with the Punto, they block so easily that a funny look did it!

I had that problem when I first got the car, now it only happens occasionally....and I don't know really what I'm doing differently. I think I might be starting slowly, and turning it up and, if it cuts out, I back off a bit, but I'm not really sure, it might be the angle of the fuel hose, too.

I've been meaning to try the Shell Nitro stuff for some time, but I don't seem to get around to it. Maybe soon, given the number of positive reviews it gets!

I fill u with ahem... Tesco unleaded never had problems only go their because of clubcard points. Is there that much of a difference between the different companies .i.e. Tesco, bp etc? If so which would be the "better" ones to use? I live in cambridge and have texaco, Shell, bp and supermarket chains tesco and sainsburys

I know that Texaco garage, and they don't have much turnover (which makes me worry about how long it is sloshing around their tanks) and, because they do not have much turnover, their prices are a bit high when they are on their way down, but can be reasonable when they are going up.

In that area there is also a Shell with a fair turnover (Fourwentways) who are usually reasonably priced.

There is a weird situation with some of the BP stations (it is actually a particular chain, rather than BP themselves) but there are stations that do a 'Cheap Fuel two days a week' deal; if you ever see the 'Cheap Fuel Two Days a Week' boards out, you can mentally add the words '...but you are out of luck, because today is not one of those days'. So, that'll be a couple of days on which their fuel is 2p cheaper. This is also the same chain that puts '3p off' tokens into some local papers, so, by combining those, you can get 5p off. I'll just add that whether you get 5p off, or not, makes a difference to how you look at their fuel prices, and, combined, it is probably cheaper than the supermarket options.

The only Sains would be Coldhams Lane, and they seem to blow hot and cold on pricing; they are either at about the same region as everyone else around Cambridge, or a couple of pence cheaper, and you can't tell which it is going to be in advance.

I've been a bit disappointed , by the prices at the Bar Hill or the A10 Tescos; at the very least, I'd have expected the big Tescos at BH to be cheap, but it isn't particularly.

Compare fuel prices with Stevenage or Grantham (places that I drive past occasionally, and will fill up on my way past), and there are clearly cheaper prices around.

Will make a mental note of that, normally fill up at milton, saved 6p a litre today. Sainsburys was 124.something the other morning when drove passed.

Fourwentway a wee bit out of the way but not if filling up from work (work near babaraham). Stil getting used to the price fluctuation as I only fill up with 30ish mile till empty
