Lin1409
Hi Dezwez, how do I find out the code. My husband has a MaxiScan OBDII/ EOBD reader but it won't show him any codes. I went into google and put in how do I find out about the engine malfunction light and that's how I arrived at the forum but it said something about 'Dashboard trick' to find out about the codes. jeebowhite
Welcome to the family Linda! The code reader should pick up more codes than the instrument cluster. Plug the code reader in, switch the ignition to position II, leave it for 2 minutes to allow the code reader to negotiate parameters with the ECU and then attempt a scan. The dashboard trick works only if you have an on board computer, and if you do, its not guaranteed to reflect all codes, or accurately. Whats happening with the car? is it driving perfectly but with this error code? if so it could just be a sensor out of parameters, otherwise if its driving like a dog, limited to limp home mode it could be anything up to and including a failed DPF. If you can offer more info of the car such as mileage, service history, day to day details of the cars behavior these would help us to help you.

The 'Engine Malfunction' light comes just shortly after I switch the engine on. I think I lose a bit of power going up hills, but this could just be me thinking this because the light is on. She was serviced for the first 3 years by a ford dealer. And had just been serviced by my husband lately( new oil , oil filter, air filter) but she was ok for about a month, but again I haven't been using it much lately. At the start the light came on and then if I turned the engine off and then on again the light would say off, but now it says perm entry on. She is a 2009' 1.6TDCi, and has 60,000miles, Style. My husband had a look in the engine compartment to see if anything was loose and he noticed a black hose pipe going to turbo and showed me it. Some oil had been dripping from it and has been running down the front of the engine. He tightened the dupliclip up. Light still on. Could you tell me what a DPF is. As this is getting a bit complicated I will let my husband answer.

jeebowhite
Ok I have to be honest and say the oil thing is probably very little to do with the error. You definitely need the codes read so we can start to help. Have a look at my signature 'got an error On your car' and that will guide you through the purchase of a code reader. If the car is driving without issue then give yourself a few days to buy a code reader as it will help us identify what the issue is and talk you through a fix. Dpf is a filter in the exhaust system. It's the diesel particulate filter, which takes additional soot from the exhaust to clean what comes out the end. It's expensive to replace and needs maintaining. Start off looking for a code reader. Get one on order and as soon as it arrives Rd we can you a lot more. They can be dirt cheap but one of the best purchases for a car. Mine have saved me about 1800 quid so far over my last 3 cars. If you need help on choosing a code reader I'm happy to her you, but if you have an android phone you can get a big basic reader for under a fiver. I'd you have a laptop you can get one for about 14 quid with some free software. Otherwise you can get a handheld for anywhere between 10 and 2000 quid. I suggest going for the laptop or handheld as they tend to access more error codes. The android phone method is great as a first port of call but it depends on where the error is as to whether it will see it.
Lin1409
Hi Lin1409 husband replying. I have a MaxiScan ms309. When I plug this in it says no codes found. I thought it wasn't working so I got a new one from eBay a D900 2014 version. I told them the model I wanted to use it on. Tried it tonight and it does recognise the car asking me to make sure the plough is in and ignition on. Tied it in my VW Passat which the MaxiScan works with, but the D900 doesn't recognises it either. I was watching a YouTube video regarding the DPF by GaryG it it seems to show a similar problem. Lin has not been using her car for long journeys due to her changing jobs and only takes it just to the shops now and again which are only about 7miles away (14 miles round trip). It is a coincidence that when we took it down to Dublin Airport and back around trip of 250 miles the light has gone out and didn't come back after a few weeks when she went out shopping again. Could this be the problem. Seemingly diesels don't like small journeys. Previously she was traveling to work around 60 miles each day 5 days a week? jeebowhite
Does the d900 bring up any codes? The issue could be anything from. Clogged dpf to fuel filter to engine sensor
