Hi,

Just noticed tonight that the right hand side of the drivers scuff plate isn't illuminated. Must have failed today as was working last night. Anyone else had this issue or have I just got a car that seems to want to spend time in the garage?

Very common problem Peter, lots of ST owners have had this problem. Looks like a trip to your dealer to have to rectified.

Loads of these have failed, only thing to do is take it back to the dealer. Seems to be an issue with how the cable is routed/connected to the unit.

That is some good news then as at least they should know what they are doing. :)

I have a video and photos of it as wasn't sure if they would be silly over it.

Lad at work with a Fiesta ST had same problem on passenger side, was only noticed when he had someone else in the car with him.

Out of interest now are these scuff plates even fastened in? Do they just clip in and out or are there some hidden screws somewhere? Clearly I am not touching mine as the garage can sort the issue, but just interested how they are fitted / held in.

Think its just adhiesive tape with a clup each side to fit in the correct posistion. Most scuff plates are only tape on the back

Well it goes in tomorrow and I'm assuming they will do they job on the day given they know the issue. However knowning my dealer they will tell me tomorrow its not a stocked item locally and will need booking in again ...its when they pull this trick that annoys me most. We shall see.

Just cus its a known item dont mean that is your problem. Thats how my place an the rest of the ford dealerships work. If we order certian parts in we cant send them bacj if they are not required an it costs us money. Plus its also down to ford warranty as we have to follow there rules completley or wen wont get paid for that certian job. As long as it gets sorted an your happy thats the main thing

The first visit will be to check that there is a fault and that it's covered under warranty, theyll order the part and book another visit.

I never knew it works like that to be honest and makes sense. Why don't they explain this in the first place? Like just had a call from service who want the car "until 5" which means most of the day it will just be sitting there clearly.

Mind you got them looking at the engine issue of coughing / struggling to start when hot. I've asked then to check the actual fan is working as I've never heard it kick in.

Normally its for parts to turn up as they can make sure its sorted within the day an no dissapointment to the customer.

If they say come in for 1pm an you do and the part isnt there. They will have to turn you around an say bye. Which you would be abit miffed.

With the engine issue, they will put it on the diagnostics an it gives you a pinpoint procedure to follow (normally) an that cank take from 5 mins to 5 hours. But thats instructions from ford. (Even longer if they have to phone up ford technical. They take 30 mins to answer the *****).

Theres alot of thing that isnt explained to the customer, normally the service advisors dont know as they are taught diffrently to the technicians. I tell the customers wen i see them to try an make them understand its not as black and white as it used to be 5+ years ago.

And to annoy us technicians and the customer even more, there are certian parts that ford warranty will tell us to fit and give us a diffrent part number. An they usualy arrive within 48 hours all becuase its cheaper than ordering one straight from our normal parts system

Sorry for the essay haha!

Thanks for that. Great to know what should happen. I'm hoping they actually do a proper job at investigating the engine this time as I get the feeling last time they just passed it off as nothing they could find wrong with it. Clearly there is though.

Pleased to report the scuff plate has been replaced and seems the engine issue is still proving elusive.

Can't fault the dealer though as service advisor did actually mention how it may not get done today, so it was a real positive to hear it was done.

Just got to keep an eye on the engine. I'm assuming when they plug it into the machine it tells them if something isn't working as it should?

Depends if it produces a fault code. If something fails then it would produce a fault code.

If its an intermittent noise then it wont 9 times out of the 10.

Have you got a go-pro or anything that can record you driving? Id suggest setting it up an record yourself driving normally. An try to reproduce the fault. Then at least you can show the dealer wat is happenin if they cant reproduce the fault on the day

Thats a good idea. I have been trying to remember to film myself starting the car when its hot, however typically it hasn't done it recently. However typically tonight it did it to a certain extent when I started the car on the carpark when I wasn't filming and they were not around. But I shall keep an eye on it and im sure I will catch it properly on camera at some point! lol

I was wondering if it was the fan that wasnt working when the engine is off and the engine getting too warm, hence when re-starting the fuel is evaporating before its ignited. However im guessing this sort of fault would have shown up and would have been something that a technician would picked up on.

I can't fault the dealership and I do get the feeling they have actually tried to find / see if they can find the issue.
