Yorkshire Dales Blast - Buttertubs Pass - Anyone Fancy This?

So with nothing to do today I decided to go for a drive with my son over Buttertubs Pass as I had heard so much good stuff about it. This is the route I took and my thoughts about it.

So form Halifax drove to Skipton and along the A65 to Ingleton. This is a good road if you don't get stuck behind tourist traffic. At Ingleton I took the B6255 to Hawes stopping at Ribblehead viaduct for a cuppa and photo shot.

From Hawes it's Buttertubs time. This is only a short 5 mile drive and it steep up and steep down the otherside. Sheer 1000ft drop on the right side but views are pretty stunning. To be honest it's not the best road I've driven. Turned left and took the B6270 through Thwaite and over the moors towards Nateby.

This was entertaining today when we stopped for a "natural" break on the top of the moors with nothing in sight except grass and sky and a clear road for 1/2 mile in each direction we had just got back in the car when a Toyota Avensis comes from opposite direction and whilst passing me decided to leave too big a gap and ended up in the ditch up to the sills. He wasn't going nowhere due to very wet boggy land off the side of the road. Fortunately no one hurt except his pride. He was a Dutch bloke in a hire car. There was no mobile signal so I went to the nearest garage about 4 miles down the road and sought help the mechanic took his 4x4 and pulled him out for £30. Dutchy was very lucky, there did not appear to be any damage to the hire car and nothing that a good jet wash wouldn't put right. All this took about an hour but was my good deed for the day so feel good about helping him out.

Onwards to Nateby and turn left onto the B6259 and then left onto the A684 back to Hawes. Then back to Ribblehead and across the B6479 to Settle and back home.

Was a great day out, good weather great roads bit of fun with the car in the ditch and 150 miles or so miles on the clock of the ST2.

Heres a link to the route in Google maps.

I'm definitely up for this, looks like a great drive, although hopefully we won't have to pull anyone out of a ditch next time. I should be free the weekend after next (1st & 2nd Nov). And I guess Tom will have his ST by then? :driving:

I might not be available the weekend after that. I've got the 17th booked off work so if all of you want to book a day off too we could do it then lol, somehow I think that's unlikely.

Time to start making some more definite arrangements for this drive for anyone who is interested. Obviously at this time of year we are pretty much dependent on the weather, we really don't want to be doing this if it is raining and certainly not if there is any chance of ice or snow, I'm not planning on rescuing anyone from a ditch again!

So I suggest we have a couple of dates with one as back up just in case we have to cancel the first one. So let's go for the 22nd of November as first choice and have the 29th November as back up. Let me know if these dates are OK with you or if you have any other dates in mind. (Don't want to get too near Christmas really)

We can meet in Skipton where there is a large car park, post code for your Sat Nav is BD23 1EE, I think we should meet about 11am let me know if that is OK with you guys. This drive will take us a good 2-3 hours depending on traffic so we should be able to get back to Skipton while it is still daylight.

Anyone interested please post on here and if you PM me your mobile numbers I can contact you if there are any last minute problems.

Let's see if we can get a good few cars on this drive and then maybe could be the start of more similar events next year.

I love the roads around ribblehead viaduct and Hawes, every time i get a new car i take it up there, although I havent made it with the ST yet :-(

Can't do Saturdays though!

The 29th is also better for me, but I could do either to be honest. Looking forward to it :). Do you know how many miles approximately the route will be?

Yeh if you click on the link in my first post it links to Google maps route which says 115 miles. Add onto that the drive to Skipton and back.

Yes I bet some of us will need to wait for pay day, might need to put about £60 worth of V-Power in for this ;)

Right guys time to start making final arrangements for next Saturday 29th November. There is one change of plan, I realised that Saturday is market day in Skipton so decided we should meet at McDonalds which also happens to be right next to Skipton Ford dealers. The post code is BD23 2UB Millenium Road. The entrance is actually into the Ford garage site. We can also get fuelled up on Sausage and Egg McMuffins before setting off, haha.

Think we should meet around 10-10.30 so we can grab food and aim to leave no later than 11am to give us plenty of time before the daylight goes. Obviously all this is weather dependent.

List of participants so far;

Would be good if you could confirm you are going and also PM me your mobile number so I can confirm on the day if we are going ahead or not, I've actually already got Phil and Nath's numbers so just need Nathan's and anyone else who decides to come along anyone is welcome just let us know.
