Slight crunch going into 3rd gear.

Hey,
I have a 1999 Ford Focus 1.8TDdi and recently I've noticed a very slight crunch going into 3rd gear. Which is only just avoidable if I go into 3rd VERY gently.
Is this bad? I've been told it's most probably the syncromesh ring on the gear. Is this a problem that will cause exsessive damage? And how much will it cost to fix?
