Engine Bay Rattling And Loss Of Power

Hi all,

I have been experiencing a problem with my 1.0 Zetec S ecoboost recently and was wandering if anyone could help

the problem started when I noticed a rattling sound coming from the engine bay when idling. I thought nothing of it to begin with but it became louder with time to the point you could here the sound inside the cabin when idling and driving. I took that car into my local ford garage where I bought the car from and they checked it over and said that everything was fine.

The problem still persisted and it became apparent that there was a lack of power, the turbo seemed to stop spooling up at times and when it did spool there became a massive amount of lag when giving the car a boot, something that never happened before

I took the car back again and they checked everything over and said once again that everything was fine. They stated that they had checked the engine bay, turbo manifold and the fuel pump and couldn't find any faults

despite all this the problem still persists and I'm at a loose end now where the car doesn't perform anywhere close to what it used to, it's very sluggish to drive and the power seems to have vanished entirely

I managed to video the engine sound as it became very noisy as proof that something isn't quite right so if anyone would like to hear that then please let me know and I shall link it for you

please any help would be great as I'm worried that their is something seriously wrong with the car as it really doesn't feel sound or perform the same as what it did. The car was purchased in august so is only 4 months old

thank you

Get the chief mechanic(sic) to come with you for a test drive and let him drive it.

I've already had someone take it out and drive it and they said something seemed odd with the car as they have the same as a demo and theirs feels more punchy and responsive and that was something that was used in evidence the second time but they still couldn't diagnose the fault

Without going all gung ho too quickly.. If they still can't 'diagnose' the fault quote the sale of goods act on them...

Clearly the car is not fit for purpose as it doesn't drive the way it's meant to, seeing as there is a marked difference between yours and their demo. Guaranteed they'll get themselves in to gear *terrible pun* and actually try and sort it.

And if they don't tell them you've spoken to CAB and others of that ilk and they've advised you that you have a case against ford.

Hope that helps!

Or just leave the car at the dealership and say call me when it's done and I'll bring the courtesy car back, force their hand, works better than getting all legal on them, they probably get that all the time, taking up drive space in most industries is the biggest annoyance.

As above ^

I'm afraid I would be throwing my toys out of the pram if I were you. I cannot stand bad customer service from a small number of dealers. Fair enough if they cannot find the fault and they have genuinely checked, but why should you have to keep the car? If it doesn't work and its 4 months old then you are well within your rights to give them the keys and demand a courtesy car until it is fixed or point blankly REFUSE the car and say you want a like for like replacement. The techs have had the car twice know which is adequate time to diagnose and order replacements parts etc.

I haven't had to personally call them, but I've read loads of positive outcomes from calling Ford UK customer relations and kicking up a fuss. 020 3564 4444 - option 3

Yeah I think that's my only option so thanks for that I'm not happy but just wanted to check to see if anyone else could think of anything before I throw the keys at them

Oh and just to reinforce the point this is the link to the video of the sound the car makes all the time

Yeah that isn't healthy. A new car with engine issues needs sorting asap. Last person I heard of having a similar noise had a brand new engine put in under warranty of course, something like a mis-aligned crankshaft or crank

Good stuff filming it and you can hear the noise perfectly. Hang onto the video and use it in the dealership when proving your point to the service manager. If you call Ford customer relations they may also want the video emailed to them as evidence.

Sounds like a manifold bolt rattling its !Removed! off

Surely they should be able to pick something like this up though, rather then telling me that there is nothing wrong with the car and that it's "all in my head"

I've been down to my local dealer this morning and told them that the car is not the same as it was when I bought it and that it's not fit for purpose and I will not be accepting the car back until the problem has been fixed, no matter what this entails, from part replacement to the more extreme end of the scale i.e engine swap or a like for like replacement.

I showed the technician the video as posted above ^^ and he said that it should be making that sound and I quote "that's a perfectly normal sounding engine" despite the guy sat behind the reception desk was referring to it as a "lawn mower"

I guess its just playing the waiting game now as see what Ford decide to do for me

Sounds like the dealer / techs are gonna be a !Removed! on this one.

Next thing to try, they must have a 1.0 125 car in the dealership as a demo or whatever. Ask to have them side by side and rev both so the technician can hear. I had this with my ST, got both side by side revving and on idle to prove there was a fault. If they refuse to do this or give you any kind of excuse go straight to Ford customer relations.

I have just noticed you are from Hampshire mate, same as me, may I asked which dealer/ dealer franchise this is as I have an feeling I know which one.

Only way to check the mani bolts on that engine is to take the inlet and turbo off, otherwise you can't get to them, just looking for the rattle which is possibly all they did isn't going to show anything.

When the engine is cold, grab it and see if you can move it and hear anything, only when it's cold though, they get to like 800 degrees so don't touch when hot.

One down Newgate Lane...

Yup, thats the Franchise I was referring too. Nothing but bad service from them

Put in a phone call to Edwards Ford - Salisbury. They will actually help you.

That speaks volumes in its own right then, the only advantage that I have is that the Head of New Car Sales down there is a bloke called Steve French who has been a family friend for years, he was off today when I took my car down to them, so I shall speak to him tomorrow morning when I go down to check up on things and make sure he understands what I want done

Told them today that if they call me back to say the car is fixed, it better be or their will be hell to pay, I think its incredibly unfair that I'm paying for a car that has just turned 4 months old and already has engine issues which is a massive concern for myself

By Salisbury you say....I shall speak to them as soon as I know whats what from Newgate Lane, thanks for all your help!

Update to the situation, ford have decided to keep the car for a week to see if they can make the engine fault. They have given me a courtesy car to use for the duration of their tests and I should hopefully have the car back all healthy Thursday or Friday next week.

As far as the engine sound is concerned, from the start they have always told me that was the normal healthy sound and it should sound like that, obviously I have always questioned it and no one was ever able to prove it to me. However they have proven this to me as they showed me a video of the exact same cars engine sound and the courtesy car that I have been given which is the model down and a 1.2 eco boost sounds exactly the same

Hopefully they will be able to source what causes the power loss and the car will be back on the road fit and well by the end of next week.

I just want to say thank you to everyone who has helped and advised me with this problem and hopefully it will be resolved once and for all this time

Wow, reading this thread it amazes me that some of these dealers stay in business and get away with being so bad... hope you get it all sorted :)

I was appalled by the service desks customer service, especially with comments like "your car sounds like a lawnmower" laughing and walking away...

Thankfully the head of new car sales, decided to help with the situation and problems I was having and it was at this point that we started putting an action plan in place and I was given a courtesy car to use, so hats off to him from my side, but the point remains the problem should never have been dealt with in the manner in which it has done and it shouldn't of taken this long and numerous trips back to the dealer to get the problem looked at properly by a mechanic not a technician

As soon as I have the car back shall update the thread and let you all know if everything has been resolved

Thanks

As I've said previously, it's that dealer franchise. Really bad customer service I've had from them. You have to kick off to get anything done which is not a good way of doing business

Today is the day that I finally get my car back from the dealership. Just waiting for them to give me a phone call to tell me when the car is ready and she will be back!

I shall post back all the information I have once the car has been collected i.e faults found and so on

Thanks again for everyone's help and support!

If they don't sort it then perhaps we should organise a blockade of the dealership with a fleet of Fiestas, form a picket line and demand they fix it.
