You should first remove the gear selector boot cover. Below the cover is the gear selector mechanism with the 2 shifter cables attached to it. If one of these cables came off the gear selector does not work.

If this looks OK you can remove the plastic cover on the gearbox. If the cover is removed you can see the 2 shifter cables connected to the shifter mechanism on the gearbox. At this point the shifter cables can also came off the shifting mechanism.

Many times shifting problems are caused by a shifter cable which came off the mechanism or an incorrect adjusted mechanism caused by a broken adjuster at the end of the shifer cables.

If you find you need a replacement shifter mechaniam I have a spare 5 gear mech out of an 09 1.6 Focus including the cables.

I'd only be looking for postage (largish box), say £20.

Hi,
I Have the same problem. The message “gear selected will engage at low speed” appeared on my car’s screen, when I changed D to R and at the same time there was a strong vibration-shock in the car gearbox. I sent the car in a specialised garage since it has a guarantee. Three months later since they checked the car, upgraded it and restarted it, they gave it back to me, ready to use. Unfortunately when I drove it for about 300 kilometres, the problem showed up again. My car delivered to the garage again, they checked it and I was stand by, until the factory gave the order to change the car’s gearbox unit .I have already done 200 kilometres with the new gearbox and now the message showed up again in the transition from D to R. . The message turns off immediately after 2 seconds. This problem appears every time I switch from D to R! After the change gearbox the vibration-shock is a little bit softer. What’s the solution? I have read that other customers have also problems like this.
