roocat
Hello everyone, looking for some honest opinions please as I need some help making a decision. So for one reason or another I have started driving later in life than most and am now in my 30's. I have my test in a few weeks so fingers crossed. Now being the more mature new driver I have more money than I did 10 yrs ago and am able to buy a decent first car. I've decided to go with the Fiesta as I can't find a bad word said about it, then I saw the ST.... :). I've too'd and fro'd so much over the past few weeks between the ST then Zetec S then finally the Titanium X. I talked myself out of the ST as I figured it's just too much car as my first vehicle, even though it's by far my favourite. So my sensible head won and I plumped for the titanium x (opting for the luxury and gadgets). So just as I think about hitting the button at drivethedeal I keep getting this nagging feeling that I should get the ST, as it's what I really want. So my question is, is the ST too much to handle for a new driver?, should I stick with the sensible titanium X choice?, or am I just playing it too safe?. I'm a sensible chap so its's not like I'm going to take risks driving the ST but at the same time I dont want to feel like it's too much for me, give the lack of experience. Also just how 'firm' is the ride? What do you think?, I have seen a couple of people on here getting an ST as their first car, I wonder if they are around to comment? Hg7196
I'm 18, passed my test 2 months after my 17th birthday. Due to circumstances (no circumstances do not mean accidents) I've had a few cars, started with a 1.25l Zetec, then a 1.3 corsa, a 1.0 Ecoboost ZS now the ST. I wouldn't be put off getting an ST as a first car although I'm glad I didn't get the chance. As long as you treat it with respect I'm sure you'd be fine - the same with any car really. Also, the ride is very firm compared to anything else I've driven. Avoiding potholes is fun not just for the ride but the wheels too. StevenST13
I'm an ST owner But it's not my first car. So here goes with my opinion on it in 2 weeks of driving one. The first thing I will say is the ST is such a well mannered car I couldn't believe it my self when I tested it. Yes it's fast as well if you put the right foot to the floor. But if you are sensible and don't boot it it's still a joy to drive. The ride is firm but never crashes about which is a good thing on are roads. Fuel economy is surprising town driving in getting 35mpg and more at times. I can't say a bad thing about it! Now though as a first car just for running cost more than anything go titanium x. But I will say do some research if the ST is the one you want and you can afford it then go for it. Mines an ST 2 and that's the one you should really get if you want mod cons. I can safely say you won't regret either car and the ST's power is only there when you want it so it's easy to handle. If there's any questions I can answer feel free to ask roocat. MarksST
If it's the ST you want go for it! you'll only regret it every time you pull up next to one at the lights. Aslong as your sensible you'll be fine.
MattDRX
It's only 180bhp, the brakes are very very good much better than the other fiestas. It is firmer but you get a a pair of far superior seats (heated too) it does 44mpg compared to the 1.0 which does about 48 there is nothing in it. I had the 1.0 and couldn't stand it tbh so swapped it plus a few k for the ST, still don't like it as much but it's much much better than any other models they have going. You're asking for a reason, more so wanting to read people telling you to get what it is you want, just go for it, plus it'll be worth a hell of a lot more than the Titanium in years to come off setting the cost. Hg7196
Your next question should be what colour;) and if I had my time again it would be Molten Orange! Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC
roocat
Thanks for the replies, much appreciated and I think I'm made up my mind to go with the ST :) woo woo!. Will chew on it over the weekend and then think about when to get it. I was monitoring deals in November on DTD and the prices were better than this month, I was expecting it to go the other way. Are deals likely to be better in January do you think?. Thanks again (oh and I'll be getting the ST in black) Sent from my iPad using Ford OC
StevenST13
I work in the motor trade and typically the best deals are at the end of the month or the end of a quarter as this is when they need to push to hit there targets and get commission. See what's on just after Xmas or wait till near end of February and go for a 64plate instead of a 15 plate. They'll want the 64's off there hands quick to sting others on the price of the 15's. Philf1
OK here's my sensible fatherly advice- Get a little run about and keep it for a few months to get used to driving on your own, will be cheap to buy and you wont cry when you bump it. Then get the ST if that is what you want. Now here's my advice as a ST driver- GET AN ST!!!!
MattDRX
Don't like the ST as much as what? As my old Clio 182 which was far more heroic and reliable than either fiesta. Better performance too.

I used to love my 182, but much prefer my ST3. Might be the mountune kit, but I think it performs better too. Not sure what you mean by 'heroic', but I'm sure the fiesta is more so :)

roocat
my only small doubt with the ST now if the firmness of the ride. Some reviews i read say it's uncomfortably so. I don't mind that so much but wondered if the ST is suitable as a daily runaround. And how about longer journeys?, are any passengers going to be crying to get out the car!. Unfortunately i do have to consider the passengers, or at least pretend to :)

Unfortunately i do have to consider the passengers, or at least pretend to :) As I understand it, it's pretty firm. I have a ZS and that's firmer than the titanium but as long the roads are decent it's still perfectly comfortable. The ST is firmer than the ZS but if Ford do as good a job with the suspension on that it'll be fine and you'll get used to it anyway. If your passengers don't like it, tell em to walk! :P
MarksST
The ride is firm but not uncomfortably so, it's a hot hatch so it's going to be on the harder side. The recaros help a lot. Go and test drive both the titanium and the ST, if your worried about the ride then maybe it's not the car for you, have a look at a red/black edition or spec up a titanium X in a 3 door with the appearance pack, add a few Mountune upgrades then you'll have a car that looks similar to the ST and not much of a performance difference. wealdman
I'm going to be very boring and suggest that roocat should find out how much insurance will cost for a newly qualified driver. Also a very firm ride, while maybe OK in town, will be horrible on poorly maintained country roads.
roocat
I'm going to be very boring and suggest that roocat should find out how much insurance will cost for a newly qualified driver. Also a very firm ride, while maybe OK in town, will be horrible on poorly maintained country roads. I'm getting quotes in at £541 for the Tit X and £686 for the ST. So not too bad and not really concerned about the insurance cost. I've saved a lot of pennies over the years by not being a car owner/driver so can't complain about the costs now :) Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC
MattDRX
I'm sorry, I had to comment purely on your use of the word "heroic". What on earth do you mean haha? It made me chuckle. Quite simply put it's one of them cars than you can chuck it anywhere you want and whatever speed the car is doing and it will never let you down, track performance is far superior to the ST and felt much more...dangerous to drive fast but gave you the confidence to know you'd come out the other side of the bend. I used to love my 182, but much prefer my ST3. Might be the mountune kit, but I think it performs better too. Not sure what you mean by 'heroic', but I'm sure the fiesta is more so :) Mine is chipped and filtered now, made minimal difference. What it needs is to be slightly wider and a touch lower, centre of gravity isn't as good as it should be, too front heavy. Plus it rattles more than a 10 year old clio
E5GDM
If a 10 year old Clio is better, why have you got the ST?
