Guide: Fitting Reverse Camera Mk2.5 Focus 2008 - 2011

Hi all,

Not really much to do in this guide mainly because the chosen reverse camera kit is so good,

Has taken a lot of work out of installing.

So here's the Shopping list short and sweet:

Very nicely packaged and presented the kit is top quality and i really cant praise it enough :)

It replaces the existing boot handle while incorporating the reverse camera in to the handle,

This guarantees the camera is most definitely centre aligned on the rear of the vehicle aswell as quite discreet.

Pre-crimped terminals ready for splicing in to the existing boot handle cables:

And here's where it becomes worth the money :)

The loom is separated in two halves by this bespoke connection:

This makes things so much easier to install,

Because you're not trying to fish a bulky yellow RCA plug through the rubber goose neck between boot door and main chassis :)

Its a minute sized plug instead.

So on the end of the loom is your RCA plug for the camera signal:

This plugs in to the rear of your compatable headunit

And the blue cable:

This is a signal feed, it carries positive power from the reverse bulb to the headunit causing the headunit to automatically display the reverse signal each time you put the car in to reverse:

Open Boot Door,

Remove parcel shelf and store in safe place.

Remove both torx screws in the side panel:

Useful to have a plastic bottle or something to store all screws in preventing them from loss :

On the boot door there's two grab handles,

Inside these handles are two torx screws; one in each pocket.

Remove both screws:

Now with one hand holding the metal boot door,

 

 

Pull down the plastic panel with your other hand.

Now remove all six Nuts from iside the panel.

This can be awkward when working over head,

I suggest sitting in the boot on the sill,

With your feet on the ground outside the vehicle,

Bring the boot panel down on to your lap makes it much easier to work with,

Also when removing these nuts;

Count the rotations to removal

This avoids over tightening when refitting the panel.

Here's the nut locations:

After removing the nuts there are two clips which grip in to the boot,

These are quite brittle if they snap you can seal with a small amount of silicone sealant,

There only there to assist alignment of the panel as the bolts do all the gripping.

When the outer panel is removed you will see a rubber grommet like the one in the image below:

It's possible to disconnect a plug inside the boot panel allowing full removal of the panel,

Allowing it to be brought to a table for working with,

Here's what the loom is like dissected from the panels:

The single plug on far side of the rubber grommet is the one that's inside the boot panel.

Unplug it and the whole panel is free to remove:

At this point the standard electronic boot handle should be removed by unplugging it from the loom and squeezing the retaining clips from either side of the unit.

Strip ends ready for crimping on the new terminals:

Ensure both cables are passing through the boot panel prior to crimping

Insert one cable inside one of the red crimps and squeeze it tight with top of crimping tool.

Repeat on the second terminal,

It doesn't matter which terminal is crimped to which cable in this case.

That camera looks the business aswell, and seems to take a nice bit of messy work out of the installation.

Looking up the reverse cameras designed for the Focus number plate lights, they're seems to be two variations of the units, one with screws and one without. My Focus doesn't have the screw on number plate lights. they are the ones held in with clips, looking at the picture of the camera you have posted this version is designed for the lights with clips, am I right?

No this version replaces the rubber boot handle itself,

I don't like the reg plate ones as they result in an uneven spread of light due to camera getting in the way,

This replaces the boot opener.

Oh sorry you're right, don't know how I didn't cop that (hungover probably) :)

That's a far better design so. I had been thinking myself the number plate lights would'nt match with this mod and the camera wouldn't be dead centre either.

Ressurecting an older thread...Lenny, can you somehow confirm that the boot handle for the Mk2.5 is the same as for the Mk2? I'm thinking of replacing my rear cam and installing it somewhere else than the license plate lights - like you said, because of the uneven spread of the light. And the boot handle seems as logical place to go if I don't want to drill any holes. Thanks for any info ;)

Unfortunately the MK2 boot handle is a different shape and this unit will not fit.

Hi Lenny, you have done a good job over there. I like to fit reverse camera on my focus as well but I have couple questions if you can help me please !

I have 2010 focus titanium and I have built in sony satnav is it possible fit reverse camera and get vision on this screen ?

Hi Lenny, decided to take some questions to this post as it's relevant. Got to fit the head unit yesterday but just as I was finished I got a call so had to cancel fitting. Head unit was a pain as its so tight behind it with all the extra cables. Not looking forward to taking it back out. Made a start today at fitting the camera but had to abandon it pretty quickly because of the cold. Got the first two panels off so they can stay off in the boot and got the stock light out and this is my first question. As you can see from the  photo I have a yellow and black wire.

 

The other photo is the camera kit I got, definitely not a patch on your set up. This wire has a black  and red wire. Do I join black to back and yellow to red? Also would scotch locks be ok for joining or would I be better of cutting off the bulb and splice the cables that way.

I can't see where I run the cables after this but I haven't taken off the metal inside panel yet so I'm sure this will be obvious once I remove this.

I'm going to use some images from my archives to best help with my response I'll type it out then edit with images.

when fitting the headunit in the mk2 or mk2.5 focus; it's best to remove "the centre air vents" this allows you to fit your hand inside the dash and lift the cables in at the rear of the headunit As shown in the Guide here: Guide to Fitting Aftermarket headunit focus Mk2 & Mk2.5 Click Here

The weather is brutal today mate, I fully understand your decision to abort the task of fitting the camera.

There's two options regarding the cable connections; 

A: hold off a few more days and purchase an led pad which will come with a T10 bulb socket adaptor,

Big-Promotion-T10-BA9S-Festoon-3-font-b-

Automobile-font-b-T10-b-font-Adapter-For

use this bulb adaptor to connect your cables together plugging it in to the factory bulb socket matching red to Orange and black to black make sure the bulb socket corresponds correctly as it can be fitted both ways. 

B: Splice the factory cables like peeling a banana and strip a section of the new cable wrap the new cable around the stripped cable and tape it up tight with PVC tape, 

Option B is more of a long term commitment to a cheap piece of equipment to be honest id prefer to keep it plug&play because you would fail an MOT if the led it it ever stopped working as a registration plate light.

When fitting the camera you have already removed the inside panels, I suggest going to your local DIY store and purchasing a tube le clear bathroom silicone and a gun to apply it, alternatively DEALZ stock both items.

you will need dry weather for this; as you will open the boot and remove the parcel shelf storing it somewhere safe,

bring a pen & paper aswell as a cushion with you along with the required socket and wrench i think its a 10mm 

Sit down on the boot sill and bring the boot door down on to your lap,

this is the easiest way to work on the boot door as you can store the tools behind your back aswell.

Sit the cushion next to you on the boot door sill; this will prevent the boot from closing at later stage when your not sitting there.

now disconnect the loom feeding to the ouside boot handle and registration lights by simply unplugging it.

next you need to undo the 06 lock nuts from inside the boot panel, these nuts are holding the outside boot handle.

This is very important; when removing each nut - count the number of rotations it took to remove each nut and write it down.

the reason for this is because the bolts of this panel are part of the plastic mould and they will very easily rip out of the plastic panel if over tightened when refitting.

anyways, 

With the nuts removed,

stand up outside and lift the plastic panel asway from the boot panel, squeeze the rubber grommet which is surrounding the loom and bring it to a work bench or kitchen table.

You can now slot in the camera, and move on to connecting the cables as discussed earlier and whichever way you have chosen to do.

then using a scissors or knife; cut the head off the second grommet point on the rubber grommet feeding in to the boot;

Feed the video loom through this grommet to the inside of the boot door.

it's now ready to be returned to the vehicle, 

First; insert the rubber grommet on the outside of the boot door and make sure it's in correctly.

then line up the boot planel on the door ensuring the bolts are all going through the holes.

Using the bathroom silicone now: on the inside of the boot door, 

Bring the boot door down on to your lap and apply a small ring of silicone around each of the bolt entries before applying a bit and counting the rotations.

start with outter bolts then centre ones.

Wow, thanks Lenny for such a detailed response. Definitely a bit clearer now. I'm going to go with option B for connecting the wires as I want to try and leave the stock light in case I need to connect a bulb for things like the NCT. Think I'll leave it till Saturday now to go at it as I wouldn't get it done in an evening after work. The different colour wires confused me when I saw black and yellow wires but red and black on the new camera. I'm a carpenter so have all the tools but when it comes to connecting wires I'm totally lost and nervous. So just to confirm  yellow to red and black to black?

Yep, 

Generally in any case the bright colour is the positive and black is negative.

it this case it is for sure 😅 

Just ensure when inserting the bulb socket that the correct cables match up on both sides of the socket as the bulb socket can be rotated and re-inserted.

also tape up the socket when connected to protect from rain but leave a tab on the tape to allow yourself remove it at a later date if fitting a bulb or different camera,

I noticed you mentioned NCT there instead of MOT; are you in Ireland?

Generally in any case the bright colour is the positive and black is negative.

Just ensure when inserting the bulb socket that the correct cables match up on both sides of the socket as the bulb socket can be rotated and re-inserted.

also tape up the socket when connected to protect from rain but leave a tab on the tape to allow yourself remove it at a later date if fitting a bulb or different camera,

Yeah, based in Dublin myself. Thats a good tip about the wire colours. Glad I can keep the bulb socket in place if ever needed again. Are these cameras OK with the NCT, they fail for some crazy stuff. Good tip too about taking the air vents out, would have saved me a bit of hassle and my knuckles. Do they just pop out?

no fail on the cameras atall as there not on the list of items to be checked, a rear wiper isint part of the checklist unless it's present on the vehicle, I've removed mine and passed.Guide To De-Wiper Rear Of Focus Mk2 & Mk2.5 Click Here 

regarding the vents you need two screwdrivers and a torch, 

Press doen the clips with screwdrivers and slide them out towards yourself.

they slide back in without any tools, see images 👇

Was easy enough bulbs are a straight swap 55W each and passed NCT twice 😅 still has a red fog light along side the reverse bulb in a German left hand drive light unit.

I've installed an "auto off" to the fog light so if the fog light is turned on.

Just one more thing for now while I have you here. I've noticed on the long RCA cable there's a red positive power cable on each end. Now I know at one end it's the power supply to the reverse light but what's the one at the other end for as I'll be plugging straight into the back of the head unit. Does this end need power too?

The end that is behind the headunit; connects to the reverse sensor cable which should be in the wiring of the headunit itself.

this then automatically switches the headunit screen to displaying the camera when reverse is active👍

Cool. Thanks for that. There's a lot of cables there so I'm sure it's one of them. They all seemed to be labeled too.
