Eventful drive home from work!

On my current tank of fuel I have been absolutely determined to hit 400 miles before I filled up! So this morning I left for work (just under 30 mile round trip) with my petrol light on and my trip telling me I have 45 miles to 0. Plenty!

Drove to work this morning, all good, and arrived with it still telling me 21 miles to 0! Now I have 15 to get home, so it was gonna be a little tight..

Left this evening, it went up to 23 to 0 so I thought I'd be fine to get back to my local petrol station... now for the fun part. As I pull out of the business park and onto the dual carriageway it drops! From 23... to 13. 10 miles in one roundabout is mighty impressive

As I go down the dual carriageway it stays fairly even at about 13, but then as soon as I get off it goes down and down and down. As I'm coming into the town my colleague lives I'm into single figures.

And as I drive along the road (which has a petrol station at the end) it keeps going... 8... 7... 6...

I finally made it to the petrol station (a sight in itself, a Murco and the pumps are so old they have dials rather than screens!) and stuck £10 in to get home (not even halfway at this point).

The moral of story? Don't trust your trip computer! haha :D

The Murco fuel is awful, throttle response of a dead duck! Not a bash at ford in any way, just thought I'd share the story! Oh, and I only did 390 on the tank, lol! :(

But I think it's the way you drive and the conditions you're driving in.

If you have 30 miles to empty, but drive at high revs, then in that case it's gonna instantly fall to 25 or so.

Maybe not by 10 less but still

I've noticed this swing in range happen quite a lot in my ZS but all cars with this feature often do it to a similar or lesser degree. Once it hits 0miles you do still have some reserves but you probably shoudlnt be letting the crud at the bottom of your fuel tank into the engine or take the unnecessary risk. Think i clocked 3 miles while on 0 miles range before i chickened out and filled up.

Oddly enough I have the same goal of 400 miles per full tank and most often get it ... Just!

Haha, I'm sure I'll get there one day, my route just isn't any good for MPG really (and to be honest, I'm not exactly a driving eco-warrior).

Last time I tried to hit it I got to 3 miles to 0 lol, I think I'll give in for now and be satisfied with my 390... 43mpg is hardly terrible for the winter, if anything it's pretty good! :P

I filled up just under 41 litres in total so it really didn't have much more to give!

Lol, as much as I'm all for a bit of risk, 10 miles on a trip reading 6 and dropping one every 30 seconds and the needle firmly in the red was pushing it a bit too far for me!

I've had it all the way down to 3 to 0 before :D You still win though...

True, though I drove it no different to normal and it doesn't normally do that! Ah well, no harm done :)

Well I got mine all the way down, way past 0... so much that my M to 0 calculation told me I owed the car fuel, so I surly obliged and shoved some of Tesco's finest down its neck!

I always like a risk but never usually let it go down that low :D have had it to 0 on two occasions though

I've been there lol, my issue isn't that I want to get 400 miles from a tank but that I only use Shell V-Power, so I don't like stopping at just any petrol station to "put £10 in". So not long after I got the car I was driving home from my parents' and the trip computer said I had plenty of miles. That was until the miles started going down at a rate of 2 miles per actual mile lol, and hit 0 at least a mile from my usual Shell station. I knew it had some reserve fuel but was still scary...

Lol, I didn't wanna go for the dodgy Murco stuff but I wouldn't have made it home. The rest of the tank got topped up with vpower as soon as I could :D

When it reads 0 , then in theory there should be 5 litres left In tank to use , another 40 miles or so , as for sucking up the crap from bottom of tank, where to you think the fuel pick up pipe is?? Lol

I had a mazda 6 and when showed 0 miles left it still managed another 50 miles

Cheapest for me. Done the V Power thing in the old ST and I didn't notice any difference ;)

That's what the salesman told me when I was test driving an ST, because it got to 0 miles about half-way through the test drive which kind of ruined it. Didn't put me off the car at all though :)

As long as octane rating the same any brand of fuel should be the same except for the cleaning additves some brands claim to have extra, higher octane fuel wasted unless pcm can compensate via knock sensor and advance ign timing giving slightly more power.

I've driven at least another 20 miles when mine got to 0, it went from 10, to 4, to 5, 6, 7, 8 then just went to 0.

It always takes in how you drive, but I can't help but think if you've hardly got anything left and you are going uphill/downhill, surely this throws it off a bit as well right?

I had this happen to me too. was at Oxted in surrey about to drive down the A21 to hastings. Knew there was a petrol station about before i entered A21. so, i left oxted with 23 miles. 5 miles down the road to the petrol station and i was on 0 miles. then drove another 2 or 3 miles like this to the petrol station.

!Removed! scary and i think its actually awful that we can build and create some of the things we do, but cant get the trip comp accurate. whats all that about!?

To be fair I guess its a hard thing to predict when there's so many factors in play, but it still seems to go down faster near the end which is a bit odd!

This Murco fuel is terrible, throttle response is awful feels like a different car :( 2 or 3 days and I should burn through it and get the V-Power I put in though :D

I've also experienced this. I have had two MK6 Fiestas, a 1.25 and an ST. The 1.25 was the worst. It used to love throwing the red light at me.

I also remember putting £5 in, and the counter didn't rise from 0miles. I knew I had about a gallon, which would have got me at least another 20miles!

How are you guys getting 400 miles plus out of a tank? Are you brimming it to the top?

I filled up tonight, needle is slap bang in the middle of the full marker, and the trip comp says 331 miles til empty

Mines been brimmed and I've had around 330 to empty. That is until I got around 30 miles down the road and realised it had risen to 350 to empty, fuel tank is never ending!

I've had about 420 out of a tank before, but I do a lot of motorway driving for work so maybe that's why.

My usual miles per tank is around 350-400 but I usually fill up with at least 50 miles to 0

Still fighting the temptation to get an ST3 -_-

Don't fight it Darryl, join us - mpg is surprisingly good as long as you don't get too excited!

On a good day I average around 38-40 with a mix of sensible and 'not so sensible' driving ;)
