Ford Focus Mk3, Sub, Amp & Speakers Upgrade

Hi All,

This is my first post on here. Looking for some advice with regards to the sound system in my MK3 Focus.

I believe currently I have the Sync System (No MyTouch) with 6 Speakers.

I've been thinking of upgrading the 2 Front Door Speakers & 2 Rear Door Speakers along with maybe the Tweeters in the front next to the pillars.

I would also like to add a Sub & Amp to the sound system (Nothing to much, just like to improve the quality of sound).

Would like to see any upgrades you guys have done and where you have positioned the Sub & Amp with the car.

Any guides on upgrades would also be of interest.

I am also thinking of building my own Sub enclosure like the ones you can get for the MK2 Focus (See Link Below for Example - Not able to find one I can purchase for the MK3) but I'm currently unsure as to weather one of these would fit in Boot next to the passenger rear wheel arch.

Mk2 Enclosure link:

So in short would love your advice, guides or opinions.

Thanks.

Instead of building one why not just buy one that has the sub and amp? I've just gotta myself a brand new focus from a corsa which I had one in, I'm not putting it in my focus though.

I have this one: http://www.halfords.com/sat-nav-audio/car-audio/sound-systems/edge-edb12-12-v2-active-subwoofer

Its for sale too ;)

The reason I am thinking of building the sub enclosure is to reduce the space taken up by a standard box. If I build one like they have for the MK2 focus (Link in 1st Post) it wouldn't impede the functionality of the boot carpet if/when I need to get to the spare Tyre. And it looks nice to have a custom built one which looks like its suppose to be there.

Would really like to see what people have done to their Focus MK3 sound systems.

I highly recommend JL audio equipment cheapest uk supplier is fastcaraudio on eBay.co.uk

They give discount on large purchases I've recently saved myself 70 GBP purchasing from them,

See link:

http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/41443-taking-oval-to-blue-horizon-lennys-build-thread-2010-2015/page-71

I dealt via PayPal saved 70 pounds over there eBay prices :)

JL audio C3's are a good component upgrade,

Vibe slick kits are great for wiring amps has all you need in the kit,

Go for 4 gauge kits sign up to forum premium membership and great a free lifetime 15% discount card for Halfords where you can purchase vibe kit.

Jl also have a new range of flat sub's suitable for 15ltr enclosures and producing over 300watts of bass,

Almost certain connects2 manufacture a wheel arch style enclosure for the mk3

Check this one out:

http://carsio.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=686

Maybe a misprint as the description says mondeo,

The good thing about the mk3 focus is that its a world production car, identical shape all over the world so the mods should become freely available,

Here's what this guy thinks of his 8" sony sub from ford lmao

Looks like your doing an upgrade to your sound system having read that thread you linked in above. Is yours a Mk2.5 Focus?

I am a novice when it comes to car sound systems but I do have a car audio place less than 2 miles from my house who are really good but don't deal in custom boxes. They will fit anything you have into the car you don't have to buy it direct from them just take everything you've got and let them get to work so to speak. But I really would of liked a custom Focus MK3 enclosure the one you linked is for a Ford Mondeo Estate (2000 - 2007) just looking at the shape I know it definitely isn't for a MK3 Focus. I need an enclosure for a Ford Focus Mk3 (2011) but can I find one no its impossible, as the Mk3 has been out for around 4 years I'd of thought there would of been a custom box available.

I've seen some of the guys videos before he gets straight to the point lmao but I can't agree with him on the upgraded sub from Ford as my car doesn't have it so never heard the quality but 60w that must be useless lol.

A good !Removed! after a currey is about 95w of bass  65w is scutter

Thanks mate,

Yep mine is a mk2.5 if you go back to page 48 or 50 on the build thread that's when i started piecing the parts together,

Im stock piling the parts up to May of this year when i will take a week out of work to strip out the interior, sound proof the body and install all the kit :)

Pure therapy mate,

The local place sounds good but depending on your own interests i can help you on a few things may save yourself over 150 quid on labour by fitting the stuff yourself?

Some prefer to have others do it and some like to do it themselves,

Heres some videos regarding jl audio flat subs, class D amps and C3 Speakers

Looking at the TW3 10" 400w Sub it looks as though it maybe slim enough and they also do an enclosure (Although not custom).

See Link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JL-AUDIO-CS110LG-TW3-10-400-RMS-SINGLE-POWERWEDGE-SEALED-SUBWOOFER-ENCLOSURE-/121558559318?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item1c4d746a56

When I see I am a novice I mean a complete novice I don't even know of everything I'd need for the sound system.....

If I was to get the above sub would this amp be the one you would recommend?

Link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JL-AUDIO-XD400-4v2-CLASS-D-4-3-2-CHANNEL-400-RMS-AMPLIFIER-INCLUDES-FREE-HD-RLC-/121555823145?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item1c4d4aaa29

Also with regards to the JL Audio C3's fastcaraudio only have the 6" in stock on eBay but I don't know what size the Speakers are in the MK3 Focus and I'd need to change the Front & Rear Speakers.

No problem mate,

In this case i can show you what you need and explain why you need it,

Thats a nice sub and enclosure,

You can save a bit of money by purchasing a 5 channel amp:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121555823451

This gives you four speaker outputs and one sub output all from the same amp,

Cheaper than buying two amps and only requires one 4 gauge power supply compared to two amps two supplys.

Or two seperates:

4 channel

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JL-AUDIO-XD400-4v2-CLASS-D-4-3-2-CHANNEL-400-RMS-AMPLIFIER-INCLUDES-FREE-HD-RLC-/121555823145?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item1c4d4aaa29

Mono amp

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JL-AUDIO-JX500-1D-500-WATTS-RMS-CLASS-D-MONOBLOCK-AMPLIFIER-INCLUDES-FREE-RBC-1-/121553471068?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item1c4d26c65c

THis mono amp is 500w tune it down a bit so it dont blow your 400w sub or choose a 300w amp

Depends on how flexible you want your system to be in terms of folding down the back seat for extra storage space etc.

If you dont fold down the rear seat,

I recommend the 5 channel amp,

Make yourself a nice 9mm mdf panel with cavity at rear of seat,

Carpet it.

Mount the amp,

All cables hidden between panel and rear of seat.

If your not upgrading the headunit then you will need two of these to convert your speaker cables to RCA in order to plug in to the amp

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SPEAKER-TO-RCA-CONVERTER-HIGH-TO-LOW-LINE-LEVEL-ADJUSTABLE-CABLE-ADAPTER-NEW/360549598576?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140122125356%26meid%3D55a936669ff7470cbb162f2131d1082c%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D260292206082&rt=nc

If fitting a mono amp only,

Then its this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/High-Level-Speaker-to-Low-Level-RCA-Converter-Adaptor-lead-2-Channel-CTLOC10-/260292206082?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item3c9a9fde02

You will then need a male-male rca cable to go from 4ch amp to the mono amp if fitting separate amps:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PURE-Stereo-Audio-2-x-RCA-to-2-x-RCA-Male-Twin-Phono-Plug-Gold-Cable-Lead-OFC-/371030427999?pt=UK_Musical_Cables_Leads_Connectors&var=&hash=item566323095f

So metaphorically speaking at this point you have your two amps or one 5 ch amp positioned in the boot compartment,

Your running stock headunit,

The amp only accepts RCA input,

You have two high level rca adaptors,

Fit one of these adaptors to your rear speaker outputs,

And the other to your front speaker outputs, .

You then need to run RCA cables down the drivers side of the car from these adaptors to the amp.

The next thing you need is power to the amp or amps,

4 gauge is recommended,

I personally recommend vibe,

So here's your 4 gauge power kit:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductMobileDisplay?catalogId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=265888&productId=723215&storeId=10001

If fitting two amps you will need two kits

Ok so in this kit is:

5 metre red power cable

1 metre brown earth cable

Inline fuse adaptor

5 metres speaker cable

5 metres signal cable,

The red cable needs to go from your battery in the engine,

Through rubber grommet,

Down passenger side of car in to your amp,

The inline fuse fits to rear of battery box in the engine bay,

With positive fitted,

Unbolt one of the rear seatbelts,

Fit earth ring cable like a washer and bolt down seat belt again.

Fit earth to amp.

Next is blue cable,

This is a sensor feed,

When it feels power it switches on your amp,

Switches the amp on/off with your ignition to save draining your battery.

Run this down passenger side from the amp to a piggy back fuse on to a fuse that comes live when engine is running.

Piggy back fuse:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Add-A-Circuit-Fuse-Tap-Piggy-Back-MINI-Blade-Fuse-Holder-ATM-APM-12v-24v-12-volt-/180735820543?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item2a14b1c2ff

Next is the audio cable,

So you have cut off supply from the headunit to the Speakers when you fitted the rca convertors.

Audio from the headunit is now going through rca adaptors and in to your amplifier,

You now need to get it from the amp in to your Speakers,

So run four lines of this speaker cable from the amp,

Down the drivers side of the car and join them in to the factory lines feeding your Speakers.

Run another line from amp to the sub,

Next is speaker upgrade im grabbin a cuppa be back in 5 minutes ;)

C3 jl audio Speakers are still able to be purchased through fastcaraudio just temporarily out of stock they were selling for 190 a set i think, discuss your order with him via message through eBay.

Anyways on to the Speakers,

No problem not knowing the size because you will need some model specific aftermarket speaker adaptor kits, and these tell you the size :)

No need to remove door and meassure,

These kits also come with loom adaptors simply unplug stock and plug in aftermarket.

Front speaker kit:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CT25FD14-FORD-FOCUS-C-MAX-2011-2014-SPEAKER-ADAPTERS-FRONT-REAR-DOOR-165MM/400731672115?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140122125356%26meid%3D7fcdd7a546754dd896684e82f5ad9ee1%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D181322847290&rt=nc

Rear speaker kit:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CT25FD14-FORD-FOCUS-C-MAX-2011-2014-SPEAKER-ADAPTERS-FRONT-REAR-DOOR-165MM/400731672115?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140122125356%26meid%3D7fcdd7a546754dd896684e82f5ad9ee1%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D181322847290&rt=nc

So there we have it,

Front and rear aftermarket speaker size is 6.5"

That's all you need to upgrade to aftermarket,

Any questions happy to help.

With this setup you can still use your stock cross fade and balance control in the headunit

Wow, you certainly know your stuff!

It's not going to be a cheap job, but I'll be looking into it and costing it up.

With regards to dropping the back seats I do need to fold them down a few times a year so the mdf sheet might not work but I was thinking maybe cable ties/tidy as an alternative.

With regards to dropping the back seats I do need to fold them down a few times a year so the MDF sheet might not work but I was thinking maybe cable ties/tidy as an alternative.

Happy to help mate,

Getting to an aftermarket stage isn't cheap but is necessary to be able to fit the good stuff,

You could build an MDF panel to span across the double seat meaning its still foldable in stock 60/40 style, while incorporating a 20mm cavity for cables.

There's also fish net cable sleeve looks good,

See link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Braided-Sleeving-Cable-Harness-Sheathing-Expanding-Sleeve-in-Black-Many-sizes-/290814495525?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&var=&hash=item43b5e50b25

Some money can be saved in labour costs by routing some cables yourself,

You can also improve audio response by fitting these when fitting your speakers:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301308874480?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I've got some brand new carpet and cable may be of interest if you do decide to go ahead with it,

Just saying no pressure or obligations i wasn't leeding up to it or anything it may help you though: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/66675-audio-upgrade-items-sale/

I've planned my audio upgrade last September, I've been purchasing parts since then with the view of completion in may as you can see on my build thread.

Lenny - I'd like to thank you for all the information you have given me on this. I still haven't decided on the upgrade as of yet, going to have to think about it some more.

I was wondering if you could help on another topic (Dash Cam). I am looking to install a Dash Cam in my car but I am unsure of which ones to look at I do have some features I'd like in the Dash Cam.

  1. Discreet
  2. Hardwire to a power source (I've seen people wire in another 12v Socket, wire the cam to the fuse box and then plug into the additional 12v socket and hide that under the Dash).
  3. HD Quality (1080p)

Would like to know if you have any information on this?

That looks slightly to complicated to me. Plus I already have a USB slot as standard.

I was thinking of something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-0805-DVR-Pro-GPS-Car-DVR-Full-HD-1296P-Ambarella-A7-DashCam-Upgraded-32GB-/291296428837?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item43d29ec325

The above comes with a Hardwiring kit but I wouldn't know what to do if you could advice on what would need to been done if I was to buy it that would be great.

That kit looks good you could always fit two of those if desired one front and rear,

I can instruct you on creating a power cable extension to run two if desired.

But for fitting just one i can also guide you no problem,

Buy one of these aswell and ill instruct you: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180735820543

Tools Required:

Torx Set

Crimp tool or pliers

1 x Crimp ring terminal for your earth feed

Screwdrivers.

I am just looking at having 1 for now at the front.

If I was to buy that one along with the Piggy Back Fuse how would it be installed?

I know I'd have to run the wire from the Rear View Mirror (Location of where I'm planning on putting the Dash Cam) under the roof lining, then down the passenger side pillar down to the glovebox where the Fuses are located (Or so I believe), I have seen that people have suggested to use the 12v socket Fuse to place the Piggy Back in. Would the red wire then be crimped into the piggy back fuse and the black wire be ground to an earth?

Your help is very much appreciated

I believe that 0805 is available from amazon as "New 0803 Ambarella" from e-prance, £65.99 with shipping + fulfilled by amazon so full protection. Same one as I bought but is actually an 0805.

How mine is connected (differs to Lennys):

I have a relay (coil) connected to an ignition switched supply (The 12v socket fuse is NOT ignition switched) via fuse-tap and grounded through the 12v socket ground. The 12v socket supply then runs through this relay, meaning that the center 12v socket is only live when ignition is on.

I've then made a small piggyback harness between the relay and the 12v socket, where I get 12v + ground supplies for both front and rear cam ( twin thinwall 1mm cross-sectional cables for both), run from center console, round under radio, over fusebox, up passenger A pillar (where rear cable runs along the roof lining seam to the boot). I then have a 12v->5v mini/micro usb cable (0805 camera is Micro usb and my mobius is mini) adapter to finish off the cable. Both fused at the cigarette lighter socket.

This does mean that i'm already pulling ~<2amps from the center console socket, and i'm not planning on running anything high power from this socket at any point (+ i have the rear socket still as standard wiring).

Hi Micro,

Is there any chance of a link to this so I can have a look, I've tried to type in the above on amazon and can not find it. Also with your Dash Cam's as you have front & rear are they both the same make of camera of have you gone for 2 different makes?

I've heard that the 12v Socket has a constant live feed which has made me think twice about Piggy Backing that Fuse, when you say the Instrument Cluster Fuse what does that power?

Also where would be best to ground the earth, I was thinking near the glovebox so its out of site but not sure on actual location.

Id earth it via ring terminal on to any bolt you can find that touches the metal body mate,

The instrument cluster is the gauges and screen.

I initially tried the wipers but they remained constant live at the fuse board.

Here is the link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00JJI40KU

My front cam is this one, my rear is a Möbius (what I originally had up front).

As Lenny said you can use any point on the body to ground as long as there is good contact with unpainted metal (lots of pre-existing bolts).

The only issue at present is that the camera overlays the speed as "Kph" but labels it as Mph (So at 56mph it says you're doing 90mph) - the GPS data is correct though and I imagine it'll get fixed with a firmware update - this is true for all 0805s at present.

I'm looking to buy everything I need for this, this coming week so I can start to install it. Was hoping you could take a look at my shopping list and see if I have got everything I need and weather of not you could recommend any alternative Ebay sellers ETC.

You've got a mini blade fuse tap, but standard 10a fuse extra.

For the extra £40, you can get a 32gb class 10 microsd for £11 on amazon, and a hard wiring cable (£3ish) on eBay (search 301360340004), and then the 0803 cam off amazon. Its stated as the upgraded 0803 but its actually an 0805 (mine was!), if it turns out not to be its free return delivery and no restocking costs.

Wrt crimping - I have some draper crimping pliers, they're not the ratcheting type but do the job - ratcheting ones would be better.

Screwfix do 100x spade female or 100x spade male for £3.60 each, fairly good price compared to eBay.
