joeyanne
Hi I've just bought a V reg 1999 ford focus ghia estate. And it doesn't have remote locking. It has central locking. Is there any way of turning it so it DOES have that facility as I am registered disabled and I could really do with this function. I do not want the mobility car as at the moment the pennies are needed more. Does anyone have any ideas of capability and cost please. Rather stupidly I didn't check before I bought it! AdeMk1
Do you have a normal key or a key with 3 buttons on it?
joeyanne
Just 1 normal key I have been told there is a way apparently? But I just wanted to ask you guys aswell
Stoney871
Your best option is to buy a key off eBay and get quotes from a few local Auto Locksmiths for a cut & code service. Ford would charge to supply a key and insist on a 'diagnostic' before they even touch the car (usually about £160) and about £100 for the cut & code plus an hours labour. From a locksmith you'd be looking at around £50 - £80 and it takes about 10 minutes tops. I recommend this compatible key with all the internals ready to cut and programme- http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=361146311395&alt=web
joeyanne
So even though it has not got anything on the car for remote locking at all - its a V reg 1999 plate - it can made so that it is ' turned' into a remote locking system. ?? At the moment the only way it can be opened is by the door. Whether I've got 1 key or 6.
jeebowhite
You can buy aftermarket kits off eBay, I recall one member has done this on their car once before, but their name escapes me. It can be done, but buy and install the kit first ad I believe they come with a transmitter...
Stoney871
A v reg ghia will have RCL. I had one and it definitely did. You just need the correct key as I linked.
AdeMk1
These also work on Mk1 Focus, eBay item number 321604958346. Its a Transit remote fob but it will work on your car, you can just keep the key you have now & use the fob for the central locking, it will just need pairing to your car by turning the ignition key from position I to II 4 times quickly until you hear a chime, then press any button on the remote and you should hear a second chime meaning the remote is paired to your car. Remove your key then try to lock the car with the fob, should work and a cheaper solution.
Stoney871
It needs adding to the PATS sytem to start the car though.
jeebowhite
If you remove the central map light behind it should be a box, if the box is there you have rcl if not you don't and you can add it yourself.
Stoney871
The only version of the MK1 Focus that didn't have remote locking was the CL version. LX and above all had it. The Ghia definitely will. I'd say the only reason joeyanne doesn't have the rcl key is because the previous owner lost/broke/kept it. My advice to anyone buting a car is always be sure there are 2 working keys with it to save yourself hassle and expense. Another good reason for getting an Auto Locksmith to add te key is they can delete any keys you don't physically own which removes the risk of n unscrupulous seller retaining a key and having access to the car for whatever reason.
AdeMk1
It needs adding to the PATS sytem to start the car though. Not if he keeps the original key he's using now and uses the fob just for the central locking ;)
Stoney871
Not if he keeps the original key he's using now and uses the fob just for the central locking ;) Very true, however in my books if you're going to have to carry 2 keys it becomes a bit of a pain.
AdeMk1
The one in my post is just a fob bud, its not a key. Intended for the transit but will work on the Mk1 as a cheap fix option for him, but like you I'd prefer a key :)
Stoney871
Totally understand, a standalone fob like the ones used on the earlier Transit connect would be a good answer. Like this one I would believe should work ok- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAND-NEW-3-BUTTON-KEY-REMOTE-FOB-FOR-FORD-TRANSIT-CONNECT-/131331398406?pt=UK_Car_Parts_Vehicles_Automobila_ET&hash=item1e93f61b06
AdeMk1
Yep, that will work too, only mine is 66p cheaper than yours :P
joeyanne
Right....... I now have my next problem. I've got a key off of eBay. I asked the seller first if I'd be able to get this key to do JUST the RCL only, as that's all I wanted it for. He confirmed yes it would. I received the key today and I can't even turn the key in the ignition to do the "turning and bong" thing.😤😤 Now what? He's sent me this link New message from: easy_as_that (1032) http://www.freefordradiocode.co.uk/key/content/ford-key-fob-programming.php But I can't make head nor !Removed! tail of it. I got quoted £100 to get it to start the car as well as the rcl. Or about £50 just for the rcl. But the locksmith said RCL is something I can do easy enough. I don't have anyone that can do all this for me. Just me. But.......... If you guys remember you got me through it last year when a fella in the motor spares shop busted my key for my old focus estate. So with the A, B, C & 1,2,3 again I can probably do it myself ! But how?
jeebowhite
Use the key you have (your one that starts the car) and do the operation to get to pairing mode, then use the button on the remote remote to pair it. If that works you at least have the remote and key separate.
joeyanne
This 'new' key with the buttons on it. All I want it for is to do the remote locking. I don't know if it makes any difference but I've got a feeling its a used 2nd hand one? But the worrying thing is that everyone is saying to do it all with this 'new' key and I cant even turn the ignition? !!
Goodkat
You need to use the old key to turn the ignition and start the sequence, then press buttons on the remote key to teach it to do RCL Sent from my Gen 1 WAP phone
Goodkat
You no not put the new key in the ignition. It is not cut right to turn the ignition nor chipped right for immobiliser, but the remote will program to your car's central locking. Stoney871
As above, you just need to activate the learning phase, it doesn't have to be the new key in the ignition.
joeyanne
Ok guys. As per last year I need the A, B, Cs & 1, 2, 3s please. And I can then give it my best shot ! Then I'll come back on here either whoop weeing or screaming :D  :D
Stoney871
Insert the ignition key and turn from position II (Ignition) to position 0 (All off) and back four times within six seconds. Remove the ignition key. The locking control system is now in "learn mode" for the next 20 seconds and the red warning system LED stays on continuously to indicate this. During the 20 seconds press one of the transmitter buttons on the new fob. The remotes signal and code number is learned by the locking module and is indicated by flashing the warning system LED. Wait until learn mode times out (20 seconds) or switch the ignition back to ON.
