I think the best you will be able to do is go on all the major comparison sites and see what are the lowest quotes you can get. And add your parents as named drivers if possible because that usually lowers the quote.

You can sometimes find some other tricks to lower your quotes too, for example fully comp is sometimes cheaper than 3rd party, and selecting business use is sometimes cheaper than social & commuting only.

I'm with the Admiral Group, have been since I passed as I've had great service combined with the fact they're always there or there abouts in terms of quotes..

Aside from the postcode lottery I've found a few things can help to lower the premium

- Parked on Road INSTEAD of in a garage, I'm sure this is just because there are other cars aside from your own that can be stolen

- 6-8k annual mileage, not using in peak times (even if you may well do)

- parents/relatives on the policy, spreads the 'driving risk' over all people on the insurance as companies assume named drivers will use your vehicle from time to time!

- also worth putting on there that you have use of another car/van as this further lessens the risk and will help to reduce the premium.

If you have a years no claims being 19/20yo id imagine yours will come out anywhere between 800-1000 based on location! Hope that helps

if you get decent insurance on a st-2 at 20 with no years no claims and only 1 year driving experience I'll be shocked, im 21 and have 3-4 years experience and they wanted 800 on a zetec s. but good luck to you because i wish i was able to before i got the zetec s

That's really good, I'm 3 years older with about the same no claims and the cheapest I've seen was about £450. I blame the postcode lottery.

It is a lottery Phil. I'm 30 and have been on the roads for just shy of 12 years, 5 years NCB although I had a minor accident in 2012 that was the other persons fault and no claim made (£30 worth of damage).

My premium when I bought the car last year was £400 and something, I pay £38 per month. When the renewal comes along, I shall be 31 with 12 years driving and 6 years NCB so we shall see what I can get it down to.

To be fair, I am paying for premium cover with Sainsburys at the moment which includes lost key cover and uninsured driver protection. Only £100 voluntary excess too.

Picking up from my above post, my policy is up on April 2nd and no renewal quote yet but I was curious so I did some digging online. I can now get it as cheap as £20 per month with zero voluntary excess but I prefer to pay a bit more for better cover so I decided to get a quote from Sainsburys via Compare the market. It re-directed me to Sainsburys so I have a quote ready to hit them with.

My current policy as noted above is £100 voluntary excess, many other benefits as noted but does not include legal cover. This time, my quote is premium just as above but with legal cover and ZERO voluntary excess. £29 per month!!

Get in there! Well pleased with that cover.

Edit: Protected NCB too!

Sounds good, my renewal is due soon too so I've also been looking. Cheapest I've seen was about £310 which was with no extras and default voluntary excess of £250. It'll be a bit more once I add legal cover, reduce the excess etc, but it's getting so cheap I might just pay it all at once :)

And aren't you your own legal cover? lol

Good point in theory Phil but my bank balance has even bigger limitations than my knowledge should I need to bring a claim lol

Do love a bit of Suits!!

Just got me renewal notice through... Diamond want £600 off me, good luck trying to pry that away from my filthy hands. Looked at Aviva who gave me a quote of £400, NCB protected with £250 excess (I think) Gonna play around with figures tomorrow and see how well I fare with knocking diamond down to £28 p/m

Well spoke to Diamond today RE my renewal, still have two weeks to go before my policy runs over...

Got Diamond down from £600 to £460 in the first instance which was good - little playing around on mileage p/a and named drivers from their end.. adding 'loyalty discount' or, as I like to call it the 'you're not a mug - pay what you're meant to..' discount.

that was working out around £37-9 p/m and was apparently the 'best they could do' Yet, still it came in around £10 p/m cheaper than i'm currently paying.

Then thought I'd ask about D/D vs paying all in one go and was told if I paid all upfront the quote came down to £330!! I was shocked at how cheap it was, dividing that by 12 to work out the equivalent 'monthly amount' came in at around £28 which was what I was aiming for so chuffed with that! Also means one less direct debit for me every month, money that can then go in to the Focus ST fund ;) *If i decide to change!*

Still gonna have another scout round insurers paying the lump sum to see if I can get close to that amount, but for a 22 year old with what would now be 4years no claims I've got no complaints!

The renewal arrived this morning from Sainsburys. £557.56 or £51.11 per month!! LOL!

I rang them immediately, fully armed with my pre-emptive strike outlined in my previous post. They caved in to my demands when confronted with the quote from their website which they could view on their system.

So to summarise:

£315.88 at £28 per month

My age: 31

NCB: 6 years protected

Vol excess: Zero

Legal cover

Uninsured driver protection

Free breakdown cover

1 Accident in 2012 where someone hit me - Glancing blow - £30 damage no claim made

Happy days!

Call Greenlight and Brentacre first, they were always the cheapest for me, insured ze G Wagen with them for £412, which isn't bad given a bonnet for one is around £900+VAT and clips etc.

ST with them was under £300 with just a £75 excess.
