Rear Speakers Stopped Working

Car: 2/2008 Focus 1.6tdci Titanium Estate Last of Mk2's fitted with factory Travel Pilot EX

Both rear Speakers have suddenly stopped working and on the Balance/Fade option the "Fade" is dimmed down and can not be ajusted(as if it knows the rears not connected/failed).

Considering it must be a multi-plug on back for all Speakers it seems doubtful it would be a connection on back of stereo?! I have been sticking a bike in the back recently but I can't see anything that could have been affected with that.

Any ideas as it has me puzzled??

Not necessarily true: on the Mondy, the version with the 'super special extra hifi plus' system has a separate connector for the rear Speakers and amp. I can't really remember which version of the travelpilot that is, but it would be the one with the subwoofer in the wheel well. Really, it is only if you have the separate amp I can see the diagnostics being sophisticated enough to detect that the separate amp isn't responding, but I could be wrong.

Given the comment about the bike, I'd guess, if you have an external amp, the first thing to check is the wiring around the external amp, because dislodging wiring is probably easy to do.

I did wonder if it perhaps has a seperate amp, where it would though I've no idea?! System sounds excellent for standard kit. loud and plenty bass but not so much to make me think it's got a bass box hidden away?! If there was a seprate amp, this would be built into travelpilot or a seperate unit altogether? I've had spare wheel out so certainly nothing in there.

Thanks for your reply BOF

i) If you've got the normal spare wheel well (space saver spare, a jack and various small bits and pieces) then you don't have a woofer there.

ii) If there is an additional amp, I'm guessing that the rear three quarters are the most likely places (that is at the vehicle sides, just forward of the light clusters).

Really, it would be nice if someone with the same car answered, because I'm only extrapolating (or, to use a different word, guessing) from Mondy experience/knowledge.

  • 3 weeks later...

Had to admit defeat after seeing no wires off and no visable cause, took it to the mechanic, he too found everything ok untill he plugged in the diagnosis and it came up with "rear Speakers short circuit" Personally I never knew Speakers could short circuit, I thought if they went they just burst! I was still dubious untill he plugged in a speaker he had kicking about and it worked!

New after market Speakers now fitted! :driving:

Oh dear, I'm guessing this is what I'm going to end up with... Not a fan of having a stuffed up stereo system. My rear Speakers just died suddenly, both of them. No idea how to progress really, I'm guessing I need specialist help on the matter = £€$€£

Sounds(or does not sound?! Excuse pun) like you have same problem as me so would you not be better saving yourself hassle and mechanic costs I had and go get an aftermarket set of Speakers installed at a car hifi shop!?

Or if you have access to fault code finding equipment, see if you get same error.

Yeh probably right... Lack of pennies as I really need to join the gym means it's got to go on the back burner for now... unless someone wants to send me some Speakers :) charity donation?

I'm pretty sure they are a strange size, 137mm I think, mines were cut out and 130mm aftermarket Sony X screwed in perfectly to the inner ring of the Ford spacer
