Oh my god. I've got the same exact symptoms as you! I posted a thread " clutch clutch clutch" yesterday and I got some replies... I think both of our clutches are on their way out, they're not fully gone just yet. How many miles has your car done?

Andrew, I take it you mean that when you come off the gas and declutch for your gearchange the revs stay high? If so that can't be a clutch problem. Assuming it's not something as simple as a sticking throttle cable or butterfly it might be the idle control valve.

I had this on my fiesta. Cars are supposed to hang the revs a little when changing gears to make the changing a bit smoother. I cleaned out the idle control valve and it fixed the problem. That was on a 2002 1.25 mk5 fiesta.

By how much did the revs hang on your focus?

check the crank/vacume hoses for a split which would allow air into the system and make the revs hang.

Hung around the 1700-2200 revs mark.

Our 2000 Focus 1.8 Zetec with 180,000 miles has this issue, but to be honest it has never bothered me enough that I've got around to fixing it.

The only time that it is a bit irritating is when you come to a stop and the engine revs stay at 2,000RPM for 3-4 seconds.

Thing is, our 1997 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec-S did it as well and it only had circa 70,000 miles on the clock, but I suppose it is age more than mileage that causes valves to stick.

Strangely enough, we also had a 1998 Rover 216 with the 1.6 K-Series engine (70,000 miles) and it had absolutely no rev hang at all, in fact it dropped down so quickly you would almost expect it to stall. I do miss that car actually, head gasket failure and all!!

Yes, those K-series engines were very prone to HGF, especially the early ones with plastic dowels between head and block. Beyond 50K miles it was almost guaranteed. Not the best design of engine, Rover (and Land Rover) struggled to find a gasket design that would last.

well mine has now settled, as i already bought a fuel filter i thought i changed it as i didnt know when it was changed. what a difference that alone has made. the high revs have settled. i bought a tin of carb cleaner ready to do the idle valve, this will still get done anyway just for peace of mind. fuel filter has diff surprised me and with the Halfords membership card it was only £3.92 bargain

Indeed. We bought ours at 76,000 miles and by 78,000 miles (a few months later) the head gasket blew. Being an old car with serious undercarriage corrosion I put a bottle of K-Seal in the coolant, changed the oil and hey presto it was fine again. I don't know how long it would have lasted in the long run, but it kept the car going for another 8 months before the MOT expired and it was scrapped.
