Mk6 Fiesta Tdci

Hi all,

Complete newbie here but wanted to ask some questions as looking to change my current mode of transport for a Fiesta. I'm looking at MK6 TDCi's - either 1.4 or 1.6 but leaning more towards a Zetec S 1.6 TDCi.

One of my questions is what sort of MPG is achieveable from these models? I'm currently in a Civic 2.2 CTDi which is averaging 60mpg (real world figure) but as I'm doing 35k a year, I'm hoping a Fiesta may be able to do better - am I being realistic?

Also what sort of things should I look out for?

Go for the MK7 1.6 diesel if you want to change.

If you can get 60 mpg from a 2.2 Honda stay with it, you won't get much more from a Fiesta.

As above really...

Used to own a 1.6 zs tdci (07 plate)

Bought it with 80k on the clock, Turbo blew out on the motorway at 87k... Unbeknown to me at the time this is quite a common problem with all tdci engines (1.6 at least) between Citroen/Renault/Peugeot as they're essentially the same engine.

^ something to do with the sump not being in the best position meaning it gets clogged up, starts carbing up and damages the engine/turbo. I suppose I was quite unlucky with mine but it's something to look out for should you decide to go for it.

Real world I got anywhere between 54-62 depending on how I drove, car is insurance group 8 iirc and tax is 30 a year.

Obviously take all those factors into consideration if you're serious about swapping, don't get me wrong they're a great little car but if you're getting around 60 from your civic I'd stick with that.

If you really did want to change maybe go for a mk7 tdci as I believe the engine design was changed to i eradicate the issues of the mk6... then get an engine remap to improve efficiency of the engine - from power delivery, in gear torque and economy. You'll have a little rocket of a car that will see 65mpg easy!

You'll find you can smoke most petrol ZS drivers yet get double their fuel economy ;)

My van is a 2010 1.6 TDCI (Mk7) and its done over 100K miles now and is as good to drive as a 20K mile one.

In the summer months it does just over 60MPG if driven steady and 50 if I thrash it. Hardly any difference in winter when diesels are slow to warm up so use a wee bit more fuel but I have never seen less than 50MPG no matter what,

Power is very reasonable for the size of the engine at 90 or 85 BHP depending on the model/age and it punts the wee van along very well indeed.

If you do short journeys or lots of town driving the diesel may not be the best choice as this can clog the DPF. My one does lots of long journeys and gets hammered so the DPF should stay clean.

Great engine withe decent power but it does need very frequent oil changes or the oil feed pipes to the turbo can block or become restricted which in turn can knacker the turbo. I change the oil in all my cars/vans every 6,000 miles. One of the other Fiesta vans has done over 170.000 miles with no issues at all so doing this oil change regime is paying dividends..

Wee van still looks ace for a 100K mile motor. It has very few stone chips and is in original condition having never seen the paintshop !
