St 0-60

Bit of a discussion among some Hot Hatch loving mates on the weekend.

Ford cannot advertise their max power of the car as 200BHP as it's a temporary output via Overboost.

Can they realistically advertise the 0-60 as 6.9s as being on 200BHP or is this time recorded whilst @180BHP?

Reason being this came up is we couldn't get to the point that a pony little remap and cheap air fliter offered by Mountune takes the car down to 6.4s, no remap and air filter does this for any car.

And my one was on always neck and neck, literally spot on with a mates Corsa, which I thought was 6.9 but turns out his one was one of these stupid "burg" editions which are slightly quicker.

Has anyone actually had theirs timed properly and not via free mobile apps? surely the car has to have a slightly higher one and makes perfect sense that Ford shouldn't be allowed to advertise their cars best performance on a temporary basis?

180 BHP is maximum output, the engine doesn't constantly develop 180 BHP

200 is the maximum output on overboost, 180BHP is the maximum output without Overboost, which is limited to 15s a pop with a cooldown of 35s as per non EU spec as they are allowed to advertise on a temporary output.

Overboost is on WOT so if you're doing 0-60/62 you wouldn't be off overboost.

It's 200ps on overboost which is reset when you put your foot down again.

But given this is a temporary output / measure would you be allowed to release your best stat given you cannot achieve this 100% of the time?

Why wouldn't you be able to achieve it everytime?

You might have to make 2 gear changes to reach 60 possibly just 1, the 0-60 time is less than the overboost time limit.

Dontvthink there is a EU reg saying how the performance figures are measured either. If the car has 200hp during the 0-62 test it can't be measured anyother way, whereas it can be tested that the power drops after a period of time.

As I'm lead to believe you wouldn't hit over boost doing a 0-60 time anyway as it only kicks in at 4k revs in third or higher gear. I could be wrong but this is what a right up said about the over boost on the ST.

I think they can advertise the 0-60 using overboost because that's the only way it can realistically be tested. Assuming they have to reposition the car between each attempt, there's no way the overboost wouldn't reset in time. I think that also makes it fair to advertise that time because it's fair to assume that you'll have overboost when you need it, unlike say on a track when it won't be on all the time.

But I agree adding 15 bhp shouldn't shave half a second off the 0-60, but Mountune's figure could still be correct depending on how they and Ford cunducted their tests.

As for when overboost is active, revs etc, I'm not sure about that. I've heard a few different opinions on it. Ford should have put a flashy overboost light in the middle of the dash lol, that would make it easier to tell.

Overboost doesn't "kick in" at all, it's just controlled by the actuator and allows it to spool up more, also you have to be in 3rd gear don't you to hit 60 in the ST as it hits the limiter at about 57-58 in 2nd gear.

But it's very easy to go for a blast stop, and start again in less than 35s and therefore not achieve the stated 0-60 time.

Logically it has to be the same set up as the Focus, the Dial on the dash shows these hitting 21PSI in any gear then dropping down to 19PSI when the timer is up.

Also this was in reference to Top Gears test, the Clio beasted the Fiesta on this, by my count a hell of a lot more than .3s the Fiesta would have been on it's !Removed! at the end of it but it was way behind it, the Fiesta didn't come close to it but on actual tests with a mate who has a Clio there isn't a huge difference at all, nothing in it after 60.

It would have been good to see the boost, oil temp and oil pressure gauge on the fiesta ST like the focus has. Think they should be standard on all ST's and RS models.

On the top gear test I think if it was a proper driver and not Richard Hammond in the fezz then they would be a lot closer as Clarkson, Hammond and May aren't exactly great drivers lol!

The gearbox on the clio helps it a lot in drag races.

All turbos will reach peak boost and then tail off, this is why the torque drops off too. Other than a dyno or very long road your not going to see the overboost drop off before you've run out of revs and changed gear.

I've not read anywhere about this 35second cooldown period after overboost time out, that you keep mentioning.

I'd always take manufacturers 0-60 times with a pinch of salt - makes a big difference testing this when it's not your own car and you're not paying the bill for any mechanical damage that the car ends up with.

Agreed same with MPG it's all falsely achieved in test environments.

My understanding of the over boost is that it "kicks in" when you accelerate hard you can tell on the dash cause the gear change indicator doesn't light up as well. So if you're doing a 0-60 test over boost would be used because you press the pedal to the floor to do it.

I could be wrong but that's my understanding
