Lateral play at this end is designed to accommodate the changes in the distance between the transmission and wheel hub with suspension travel so is normal. Thanks Mike this is what I was beginning to think, when I checked them i was gripping the shafts about midway and when trying to rotate them there was no play, which was good, just got a bit concerned at first about the play between hub and gearbox.
