Windows 10 Free Upgrade ??

All that is is to notify you that it will soon be available, and it will download it once it is if you 'opt in'. It won't install until you approve it, nor will it install it before the final version is released. I installed the 'beta' version through Microsoft's Insider, which is basically giving people the pre-release to test out. I have 5 pcs for those who know little about them debating the upgrade, I want the inside track so I can effectively be 'tech support'

^ I was going to recommend something like that too. I've used Belarc Advisor a few times to get the product key off my machines when I wasn't sure which one I used.

I may give it a trial on my laptop when it goes live and see if I'm happy enough to put onto the PC as well.

Hopefully it's more like Win7 than Win8 as 7 is far better and more widely liked.

I think you're right in that most people will prefer 7 to 8, but if you don't use the features of 8 that you don't like (i.e. metro) then 8 is better I think. It's more efficient and has some nice new features, and 10 will only improve on that.

This just appeared on my machine lol:

attachicon.gifGetWindows10.png

I'm going to steer well clear of that and wait for the proper release. But now it looks like that windows icon is going to sit there in the bottom right corner taunting me. I hope it doesn't decide to update without my permission.

how did that message appear? is it popping up on certain windows versions. nothing on my 8.1

not that i want to upgrade yet, give a while to iron out problems before i want it.

Appeared about 3 days ago in my taskbar - Windows 7 Home Premium - I've ignored it so far :)

I'm hoping that after Upgrading we get issued with a Windows 10 key, which then can then be used for a clean installation later,

which would probably be straight away for me, as I would prefer a clean installation.

I'm really hoping my Surface Pro 3 gets a clean copy to save space, there is a hidden partition for factory resetting Windows 8.1,

so having the Windows 8.1 OS, it's Back-Up and the Windows 10 Update will suck up a lot of space on portable devices.

The hidden partitions never take up that much space, i've seen plenty of them and the most i've ever seen one take up is 6GB.....

Now, sure that doesn't leave you with a lot on let's say a 32GB tablet, but to be frank an install of Windows takes anywhere from 16-20GB alone, so that doesn't leave you with much anyway.

I had a 128GB Surface Pro 2 which I bought brand new for about £800 about a year and a half ago, that had plenty of space, although it wasn't used every single day.

I've since sold that and my iPad mini and with a bit of luck winning £390 from an online bet bought myself a macbook air which i've had since Dec 2014.... can honestly say I prefer the macbook over the Surface pro having owned both.

EDIT: I should add that I seriously doubt they will give you a key for windows 10, the key you will be getting (it will automatically install and thus automatically the key will be programmed into the registry) will be an upgrade key, if you want to revert to Windows 8/8.1 you can do that, you shouldn't need the previous key you had.

If they were to give away a key to you you could just take said key and go and use it for an install for some other device and purpose, which is not the intention, it's an upgrade choice, take it or leave it.

Finally, an upgrade key will not work as an activation key from a clean install..... for instance, you can't take an upgrade key (assuming they give you the key for the upgrade instead) and use that to try and activate a clean install of windows 10, they work in different ways.

You will most likely have to format and reinstall the original OS using either a DVD/Flash drive iso file. I would recommend backing up all files, and creating a bootable disc for Windows 7/8. If you do not have a disc, a lot of newer computers have a recovery partition which often contains the bootable file. There should be a method of creating a Windows disc there.

If not, you can download Windows 7/8 from the internet easily enough.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.... :P

I've done a lot of this before and there used to be a plethora of ISO's available for download from sites.

Microsoft have since had most removed, and 99% of links are no longer valid download links.

I ended up getting Windows 7, Windows 8, and Server 2008 + Server 2012 ISO's from the network at work (I work in a private school's IT Dept).

If anyone needs an ISO let me know and i'll see if i've got what you're after :P

18 months later with a failed SSD and you're out of the 'free upgrade' period, a hidden key isn't going to be any good,

you'd be forced back down to your previous OS, or pay for Windows 10, if all you get is an 'upgrade key' then that's fair enough,

all I was saying is it would be nice if they give you a generated Windows 10 key that is tied to your machine (not transferable).

I use 8.1 but have classic Shell installed and set so it looks like 7 best of both worlds really. I'll wait for 10 to get the teething glitches out the way first.

It appears as a Windows icon at the right end of the taskbar (notification area). You click on that and it brings up that window. It might be appearing at different times for each PC though, so you might not see it yet. And I'm on 8.1 Pro.

I've got Windows 7 HP on this PC, and Windows 8.1 Pro on the Surface Pro 3 and I've not seen it yet,
I'll definitely be upgrading both machines, would be nice for both to look & work the same.
I was just about to clean install Windows 7 before the announcement, but I might do it just before the release date now.

I'll definitely be getting 10 on the PC, but might stick with 7 on my laptop. I tried 8.1 on it but there were no official drivers so it had a few issues, the worst one being every time you boot it up you're greeted with a black screen instead of the logon screen lol. It could be fixed by putting it to sleep then waking it up, but not really ideal.

There 'was' a link to getting windows 7 in one of the windows 7 forums, which gives you all the versions of 7 as a ISO, and a tool which you drop in to specify which version you need. If I can't find it again I will come up with a back up plan somehow, I have a copy of 7 ultimate but I need 7 Home Premium if I went back. However, I am upgrading laptop soon, and I was waiting for 10 to be released pre-loaded before I get one.

I have noticed a couple of things with the beta version that I will be reporting to Microsoft tomorrow, they are the following:

battery life (off charge) reading is miles out

Touch pad mouse keeps going into standby and needs to have a finger ran across it repeatedly to wake it up (only noticed today as normally use a wireless mouse)

Dual core cpu runs a bit hotter, still well within tolerance but 10 degrees hotter than on 7.

It probably wouldn't be a bad shout to give it a couple of months after release to get the bugs out.

Same as a few people, might just wait untill it gets all sorted as there be so many up-dates for problems.

I still like my 7 ultimate as yet.

Here is a screenshot of the current build and the 'start menu' for anyone who is interested, it is still in beta so parts may change slightly but it is pretty much how the final will look.

I have Windows 7 at home, Windows XP at work

You can definitely see the difference when you have 2 operating systems like that, 1 at home 1 at work

still, I am not looking forward to changing to Windows 10 although it us free for Windows 7 owners which is pretty cool

^ Aren't they bothered that XP is no longer supported? There could be some security problems there because MS won't be fixing any more vulnerabilities with updates. Windows 7 has been out for 6 years, it amazes me that some companies haven't upgraded in that time.

A lot of companies keep XP running because they use specialised software (databases, tills, etc) that was designed for and only runs on XP and would be very expensive/disruptive to replace.

Imagine thousands of computers to replace plus software licences to pay for and you can imagine the spiralling costs.

We use mainly W7 at work but do have standalone computers that still run XP as the software they run costs £1 million per year per unit to licence and is of critical importance (PNC being one of them).

As they are operated via an encrypted Intranet system they are not at risk of being hacked so security updates are not an issue.

Both our lighting desks at work (Congo Jr &senior) run XP. The newer desks made by ETC (same company) are using Windows 7 or Mac OS X!

I can say now, XP is much more reliable as there's less to go wrong (in my experience both at home and work).

Windows 7 is alot more efficient and user friendly.

I'd say Windows 8 is a more modern take on Windows & carries the best features of previous versions. Impressed me enough for me to install it when I built my PC, always recommend to friends and family too

Windows 8.1 - unreliable flop. Had to repair several laptops after HDD failure from installing after a dodgy security update from Microsoft.

Windows 10 just looks to be an even nicer looking 8; and its free!! After toying with the Beta for a while I'll Probably dual boot for abit till in decide what I make of the finished OS then I'll make my decision :)

^ That's a good reason to keep XP, if there's no internet use and the software is really specialised. It's just when companies continue to use it unnecessarily that they could have some real problems.

I think W10 is an attempt to salvage the reputation of Microsoft after the lacklustre uptake of W8.

When I bought my new gaming rig last year I specified W7 as I know and trust it.

My previous pc came with Vista (crap) and I put a W7 upgrade over the top to try and make it more useable.

TBH as it was an upgrade rather than a clean install it was basically still Vista with a W7 interface and I constantly got compatability glitches and major dramas with failed updates and poor OS stability.

Any upgrade is basically a cosmetic veneer and can be stodgy and ram hungry.

I'll try the W10 upgrade on my laptop first and see how it goes before even thinking of letting it anywhere near my pc.

Windows 10 is pretty good from what I can tell so far, though I'm using the current build so some bits may change. Requires less power (although not really the biggest problem with my laptop...), definite improvement.

Pretty happy with Windows 8.1 right now - runs flawlessly, and quickly on both of my laptops. Windows 7 feels sluggish, unoptimized, and dated IMO.
