Bit the bullet and have ordered a Sea Gray Zetec S (with scrappage) over the weekend and when they called to sort the finance stuff today they were trying to talk me into GAP insurance and GardX interior and exterior protection stuff - combined for £500.

I'm tempted to try and beat them down on the price, but is this GardX thingy actually worth having, or should I get another product instead?

I bought a similar product when I purchased my car, called PureGuard, for £199 (knocked down from £250 or £299, I forget).

In my opinion it's a complete rip off, I've since seen the whole kit for sale for £19.99, I'd rather spend a few hours of my time and £20 and save on the hundreds they charge!

Depsite the products, the interior of my car still gets dirty.. liquid does not stay on the surface, and the paint of the car doesnt look 'dull' but thats because it's a new car!

If you really want it, get a similar kit and do the work yourself and save the money :)

General consencious is not to do it and to buy a kit and either do it yourself or even get a car valeting company to do it and it'll still be cheaper

Cheers Chris,

Thats what I was wondering - I might still see if I can beat them right down on the price, but doesnt sound like its worth loosing any sleep over if I don't get it.

Tom.

edit: and cheers Paul....my tardy posting made it look like I was just being rude....which since I don't know any of you lot is a little premature I think.

£500??? £300 was the most I'd seen up to now, and that's a complete rip-off in itself.

Externally the product is a paint sealant - Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection is an example of a sealant, a good one in fact, and it's £7.99 in Halfords.

Internally the product is essentially Scotch Guard. Tin of that - £5.

You achieve far more protection with a good car routine. After washing: polish - prime - wax. If you wish a sealant can go on between prime and wax. £500 would get you 3 tubs of Swissvax Best in Show, or 5 of Dodo Juice Supernatural. Now THOSE are products worth having.

Tom

Forget the GardX and have a look for our resident detailing expert Greeny's threads - that's the best way of protecting your car.

Oh and welcome to the forums :)

As others have said, avoid the paint protection from your dealer. But you should really get GAP insurance - but not at the dealers list price. Try to talk them down on price.

Don't waste your money on the Gardx; total waste of time.

I agree with Karen regarding Greeny as he is the dog's gonads when it comes to cleaning and polishing your car.

I personally wouldn't bother with Gap insurance as that's another waste of money (in my opinion of course); all you need is a good insurance company.

I agree that GAP can be a waste of money, but when you get it for next to nothing then might as well take it. Most UK insurance companies will only replace your pride and joy when its under 12 months old - otherwise your stuck with a huge gap in the car's finance. Better to be safe than sorry...
