Strange Noise - Any Suggestions?

Hey guys,

was changing the aux belt yesterday and noticed a strange noise, it sounds like its coming from over the middle of the engine around injector 2

the thought did cross my mind about the turbo but I'm fairly sure its coming from further inside the engine.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I'm just about to do its 6k oil change and its been getting done every 6k, oil has dramatically improved and is no longer lumpy over last year, the catch can has been installed for about 2500 miles now...

Hi,

Can't shed any light on this I'm afraid but I'm also suffering from unknown noise on my Focus MK1.5 1.6 Zetec. It's like a clattering noise but only seems to happen when revs are low and gear is high but also happens if I drop down a gear or two and accelerate off. My initial thoughts are tappets as the oil got pretty low at one point but it's not happening on tickover/idle? It is sometimes present on biting point and makes my car sound like a diesel.

Also sometimes (not all the time) there is some light smoke accompanying the noise from the exhaust. No excessive loss of coolant or oil though. Have checked and all heatshields from exhausts were removed when I had a stainless exhaust fitted and all brackets are new and present.

When I had my catback stainless steel exhaust is disappeared temporarily. I'll have to record it and upload it, it is very odd but definately coming from the engine bay, just can't pinpoint where!

Hey, ´guys

so this noise has been bugging me, shes a noisy car at the best of times and I'm thinking it might all be related.

Hydraulic lifters.

Since getting to these is a pure pain in the !Removed! ive read that the only other thing that can be tried short of pulling them out is cleaning them out.

Meaning Engine flush!

Ive read a lot of bad stuff doing this on this car, esp the 1.6 tdci, so I was wondering what everyone here thinks.

There are some oil products that claim to clean them and you just leave them in until the next oil change but I cant see how that can work and keep the oil in a safe state, breaking down crud in the sump cant be separated from doing the job in in the lifters so surely its an all or nothing job which probably means its edging on the side of nothing. Which brings me to the full flush

Ive read a lot about BG109, apparently this stuff is the business when it comes to doing it.

To avoid problems I was planning on doing this right, add the 109, run for 15 20 min, empty oil. add an additional litre or so of oil with the sump unplugged, this should push the lighter oil up and out of the hole, replace plug and oil. Run for 15 min to get up to temp, drain oil again, replace filter and oil. Job done

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

its going to cost a fair whack in oil etc but its a damn site lot less than stripping down the engine and removing the head....

yeah, morning is especially bad but its a diesel, I kind of expected that, but mine is cold or hot, doesn't make a huge difference, it gets a little less when warmed up but has definitely got worse of the last year.

I'm going to try out some AR9100 on it

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201078884136

its got some pretty amazing claims and almost all of the feedback on other sites suggests it does exactly as it suggests so, going to give 135ml of that a go for a while and see what happens.

failing that ill need to consider the full flush and reflush....failing that then its going to be internal job, a few unrelated people have now suggested the lifters so we shall see.

Have you checked the pipe from the air filter to turbo for split in it I didn't know my was split till I took it off to clean so fitted a new one and my is a little bit quieter if I was you I wound give a good flush and see how it goes on good luck m8

My 55 plate 1.6 TDCI just started making the exact same noise today and in the same area of the engine as your video. I was going to post a thread but I am sure it is the same noise.

I would describe it as a noise that sounds a bit like a cricket, maybe a squeak noise. But its definitely in the same area of the engine and at the same frequency.

I only get this noise at idle and it disappears as soon as I press the throttle. Also the noise doesn't change when I press the clutch, possibly ruling out DMF failure (but would need more expert advice to rule this out completely) and its not the same as the chuffing noise you would expect from injector seal failure.

Like you I also change the oil frequently since I bought the car, I changed the oil on Saturday. I was going to use wynns engine flush but forgot I had it lol.

John2015 - Regarding the air inlet hose I will check that out, I got a cheap after market one at the moment and could be source of it. The breather hose came off last week and I used a hose clip to seal it back on.

Careful using the flush mate, if not done right it can make things a lot worse.

My turbo inlet pipe is fine, its 100% from the block, doesn't sound like a leaking injector, and I ran a leak off test to make sure all is well. Ordered that stuff so will give it a shot by the weekend, with the experience some folk have had ill see if I can get some sound db readings before and after, hot an cold tho I'm not sure my phone is accurate enough to pick up on the metallic squeek

Yeah I know bud, I am I two minds still about flushing. I was gonna check the condition of the oil by taking the sump off but I couldn't get the front exhaust bolts off (that's for another topic). If it was bad I was going to flush. I should check the turbo feed and return lines too.

I will be waiting to see if that oil additive does the trick for you. There is also an independent ford specialist just round the corner from me so I might take it round on Friday and see what they think.

ford dont recommend flushing so i wouldnt do it, regular oil changes with quality oil is enough.

I do it every 5 or 6k but I rack up miles quite quickly. If you search the forum for "1.6 tdci turbo issues" there are threads with recommendations about how to reduce the chance of turbo failure and how often to change the oil

Every 6k here, I do that fairly quickly so I probably end up doing about 3 a year.

My first change I did when I got the car the oil was lumpy and a right mess, I've ticked off almost everything I can that can prevent the problems others have had with this engine and at the next change it was almost perfect, the most recent one it was completely lump free.

Still, this noise is bugging me!

I do have a slight leak on the inlet manifold which needs fixed so ill be ripping off the whole manifold soon but other than that and the strange noise, she's running well :)

I'll keep you posted how that stuff works out.

The flush is very much a last resort before considering having the lifters changed and in theory it should be fine if its flushed out with regular oil a couple of times. It will create leaks for a while but so long as all the crap is removed and not left floating about, it "should" be fine.

Cant really hear anything unusual on your vid I'm afraid. Mine makes all sorts of weird unexplainable noises though...I've had old Peugeots making less weird noises than the Focus!

Is it the same weird metallic noise that happens after shut off? I can't work out how it sounds like a marina under the bonnet after shutoff with tings and clicks and whines and all sorts!

I wouldn't expect it to be a lifter, they make a hell of a noise when they wear out.

So the AR9100 is in the car, she's been run in for about 60 miles.

My completely subjective opinion is that it is noticeably quieter, engine noise at cold and warm is much lower, at low speed low rpm it still sounds a bit like a bag of spanners but I've come to expect that from a diesel, in saying that, its also a lot less than before, especially when driving at speed, you notice the road noise and wind much more.

The strange noise is still there as far as I can tell, since its a bit quieter but I think I can notice some other very quiet noises too which may need further attention.

Since this is completely useless for anyone else to compare with I decided to try and record it via db levels on a app on my phone.

So here goes, figures before the treatment

Cold idle inside the car 67.5

Cold idle bonnet open 80.8

Warm idle inside the car 66.7

Warm idle bonnet open 80.1

After putting 135ml of that stuff in and running car for a 60 mile trip

Cold idle inside the car 66.4

Cold idle bonnet open 79

Warm idle inside the car 63.5

Warm idle bonnet open 76

I still need to check the cold idle after treatment, will check it tomorrow morning.

So based on that I'm going to leave it a while, ill do another oil change in about 4k, I'm going to do some flushing with clean oil (no oil flush tho) just a couple of replacement oil changes until the oil runs out the bottom clean, after that ill put some more ar9100 in it and see how it goes but so far, its a good improvement.

I've added the cold figures from this morning

So with AR9100 in the engine, its noise has been reduced, theres also a good suggestion that my MPG has gone Up a bit too.

She's now as noisy in the morning from a cold start as she was after being warmed up, in fact she's slightly less noisy.

For those in the know about db ratings I measured the base line db before each test, in each case the base line was exactly the same, so whilst the numbers themselves are probably well off real world numbers, the relationship between hot and cold, with and without, is completely accurate.

If the MPG has gone up as much as I think it has, ill have saved the cost of the additive over an oil cycle but I can't be sure that's accurate just yet.

I have a noise when I hit 1500rpm -2500rpm like a humming noise I have to hold it at that rpm then it makes the noise

2012 Ford focus 150 ecoboost with remap and k&n 2012 model

Any ideas please advise as I've taken it into Ford 3times already and they said it could just be the cars characteristics
