New Ford Owner With An Issue...

Hi everyone,

am new in the Ford scene so here's some quick intro:

I live in Belgium and used to drive an Alfa 147. She served me well for 461000km but it was time to let her go and move on.

As we needed some more room (the Alfa was more function follows style - like "oh crap, we still need to add a glovebox...),

I started looking at Ford Focus clippers.

Came across a 2007 mk2 1.6TDCI 109BHP dark blue model which had only 137000km and was in really nice condition, so went for it :)

She's running fine (starting ok, no issues with rust or moisture at the moment) but there's one thing that's worrying me a bit:

When accelerating I sometimes have what seems like the wastegate opening all the time, acompanied with a tsjirp-tsjirp sound and complete loss of power.

This is almost always when driving on the highway either after hard acceleration or high speed runs.

I tried to capture the tsjirp-tsjirp sound, see youtube video: https://youtu.be/TfOFopgfQhc

The strange thing is that after you allow it to settle a bit (run below 2000rpm) it suddenly goes away and won't return until a next run...

Am I right that this could be related to the wastegate? If yes is this something that can be replaced without replacing the turbo?

I've just purchased an OBD2 module and will be using torque pro to read the info from the car, but not sure yet what I need to look at... no error codes pop up when the issue is presenting itself.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Sounds like my auxiliary pulley wheel first thing in the morning.

Sent from my iPad using Ford OC

Welcome! My mum had a 147, it's really missed and was an excellent car.

get a solid blanking plate and blank off the egr valve

Thanks about the tip on the egr blanking, will certainly look into it. But will this resolve the issue i'm having? It will be good for the engine in the long run but i'm a bit nervous that this would end up costing me a new turbo or the likes...

Some additional information:

triggered the issue this morning on the highway and by means of an OBD2 bluetooth dongle and Torque I was able to see that the Boost / Vacuum reading was jumping all the time during the issue.

The throttle sensor seems to be ok (showed a stable reading that only changed when changing throttle position).

Checking the error logs revealed a new failure stored: P0234 - Powertrain: Turbo/Super Charger Overboost Condition

Once I settled down and allowed whatever it is to relax again, the issue predictably went away and stayed away even after a hot run (+140km/h).

When looking at the different information in Torque I did see that the Vacuum no longer shows: I only get a certain level of boost but when I lift it doesn't switch to vacuum (which I believe I noticed this morning prior to the fault developing itself).

have you checked all the vac pipes make sure they haven't crushed inside and possibly check the air flo meter, it's just process of elimination I think

Split hose in the air/turbo loop. Pretty common

Thanks, will look into this and report back!

  • 2 weeks later...

ok, so the story continues...

After removing the engine cover we noticed a lot of soot on the turbo / surrounding area.

The picture is similar to this one: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7ynwpzy8dgql7cu/Turbosoot_zps65a85ac8.jpg?dl=0

On the yellow part we thought that we found a leak where the bend meets the straight part, so we used a part from another focus to replace and test.

After testing there was still pressure loss but now we found that it didn't originate from the hose but from the round part just above it...

When revving the engine you clearly feel air escaping the bottom section (the one marked with the circles).

It also doesn't seem like there are any other tubes impacted (at least not what we can feel.

Can someone explain what the function of this round part is and if it is normal that pressure is escaping this way when revving the engine?
