itsrelfy
Hi all I have come across a confusing situation and I am beginning to wonder if I'm going mad or if my car has an issue. My brother and sister in law have just bought a 2012 mondeo titanium with a 1.6tdci engine. I own a 2012 focus 1.6 tdci titanium x. Both engines are 115bhp. I took it round the block just to see how they compare and I was surprised to find that the mondeo seemed keener to get going when you pull away and it felt faster. With my focus you really have to give it a boot full of revs to get it to pull away anything like spritley. Last year the focus went in to ford to have a new clutch fitted under warranty as there was a clunk when you changed from 1st to 2nd and a squeal when pulling away up hill. The new clutch fixed the squeal but the clunk remains. Ford tell me this is "normal"!!! So now I'm wondering if my focus is poorly or not. It starts fine drives smoothly once you have pulled away and there is no smoke or anything untoward. But it feels slower than the mondeo. I appreciate that I could be just imagining it but there really does seem to be a difference especially when pulling away. Does anyone have any thoughts on this. Regards Adrian. artscot79
Same engine different gearboxes different gearing etc so it wont react the same I'm afraid the only thing the same is the engine
itsrelfy
So even though they are both the same engine Bon with 6 speed boxes. They are actually different are they. Well I never knew that. I just thought it would be exactly the same mechanicals. So with my car. Do you think the sluggish pull away is normal? Even if you Rev It, it is still quit difficult to ame it pull away quickly. It makes pulling away from roundabouts and the like quite tricky
troy45
Even though the gearboxes have same numbers of gears, if the ratios are different then the characteristics of how the car drives will be different. If the focus gearbox has a taller first gear then it will feel more sluggish pulling away, but would get to a higher speed for the same revs compared to a lower first gear. This could be compared back to back with the equivalent Mondeo. Also same engine but in a different car, can run different engine calibrations which also affect how they run - harder to evaluate without some decent technical information. alexp999
If you are concerned your car isn't right, the best thing is to try driving another Focus with the same engine.
salsheikh
although mines a 1.8 and its a mk2.5 when i first got it it was really slow to pull away even when revving. Then i discovered that i didnt need to rev to pull away, once the car got moving and then i put my foot down the car would move quicker. also, it may need an italian tune! Like Alex said above, try another similar model and check if that has a clunk too
