2002 Mondeo rad fan problem

Hi, not sure if anyone can help me, i have a Ford Mondeo Reg- BK02 MLZ 1.8 litre petrol.

But after about 2 - 3 mins of running the car, the radiator fan will turn on, then it will stay running throughout the duration of the journey. Any ideas how to fix this? is it a common fault? the car has only done 40,000 miles and i beleive it has been left standing for almost a year, maybe more..

Another problem, when i turn the heaters on in the car, it kicks alot of smoke out and it smells like something is burning, Could that be linked with the rad fan problem?
