Air Filter Assembly Differences Between A Mk2 And Mk2.5 On A 1.6 Ti-but

hi, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me the differences between the 2007 and 2008 air filter housings. The box itself is larger on later models and has a cylinder type filter, and the hose that goes to the throttle body is of a different length to accommodate this. The reason I ask, is because I have the 2007 model, and has hoping to fit a K&N 57s kit, which basically has a larger lid to allow a larger cone filter to be fitted. So I'm wondering, what would need to be changed in order to do this? I'm guessing the main air deflector panel is different, but also, I think as the MAF sensor would be in a slightly different location, if the wiring loom would reach? Also in the Haynes manual, it says some models have a plug for the coolant degas flow control valve. I don't know if mine does? Has anyone done this? Anyone have pictures so I can compare the 2007 and 2008 types. I'm starting to get the feeling, it's not going to be a case of just replacing air deflector panels and hoses, I think wiring looms could be an issue, so I am now getting reluctant, but if it is just replacing a few plastic panels, then I will look into it more. Thanks for any help.

its the ti vct and they are different for one the hose is a different length and angle the maf sensor wont stretch that far you get a 57i kit for the ti vct http://www.knfilters.co.uk/search/product.aspx?prod=57-0686

you cant fit the mk2.5 airbox to the mk2 totally different setup altogether

I didn't think it'd be that easy to swap air filter assembly. But initially, I thought it'd be a case of changing the air deflector above radiator, change cleaner housing and hoses, but main concern, as you say is the MAF being in a different location. The reason I was interested in the 57s, is because it has a larger lid on cleaner box to allow a bigger cone, and with it being closed, your not going to draw in heat from engine. I think i may just get a panel filter, and was going to get a k&n but a lot of you guys really like green filters. But the only main advantage I've read about them is that the plastic edges are smaller, so effectively you have a larger surface area, but surely, with it being on the edge of the filter, it couldn't make that much difference, as the edge would be in line with most of the air box? Just a thought. Anyway guys thanks for the replies, and I will have a goosey gander at your motors for ideas and tips. I have a 2007 five door titanium, and really all I have done is change the footwell bulbs to osram LED ones rated at 4000k and also sidelights, which I really like as they are quite subtle but not too bright, and they'll last a good while. But have some magnecor leads in order, oh and have fitted Bosch super4 plugs, which have made it bit more responsive. Keep up with your mod details guys, I for one enjoy reading!

There was a recent test k and n and green cotton were the top picks the kandn is more restrictive so catches more particles downside is it doesn't give as much bhp the green cotton gives more bhp but catches less particles . Even with the Lid it still draws warm air as its not totally enclosed

they changed the filter design in all focus cars from after 2007, around the time you mentioned to the new cylinder shape filter.

the old style gets the cold air from a gap in the passenger side wheel arch whereas the cylinder shape gets the air directly from the front grill area

There is a way round it....as said the ti vct has a complicated set up the air passes into a scoop in from of the wheel arch through a few flaps into another box then up to the filter you can get a cold air feed and then using a dremel cut a hole out in the underside so the cold air hose fits in then secure it in place with tiger seal now you get air from the front of the car as the other end of the cold air feed would sit behind the headlight

Thanks for commenting on the work we do,

The feedback is much appreciated,

My build thread can be viewed here:

http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/41443-taking-oval-to-blue-horizon-lennys-build-thread-2010-2013/

And my list of links to modification guides here: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/68214-full-list-lennys-guides/

I have some findings to add to the thread regarding Green and K&N induction filters.

I understand the engine in discussion is a naturally aspirated 1.6 petrol,

But id like to add some info from my own experience with a 1.6 Turbo Diesel running a cylinder style induction filter.

On my particular engine,

The Green Cotton Performance induction filter has been a great improvement over stock,

Here we are in terms of evolution:

Stock filter:

Image2382.jpg

I then upgrade to Green Cotton Performance induction filter:

Image2403.jpg

Image2392.jpg

Findings were a great improvement compared to stock induction filter,

Saved me money on service by not having to pay ford to change it,

MPG increased by 4km per litre

Transition between gears was much smoother.

I then had the dpf gutted, ECU remapped and found the induction struggling a bit when cruising in 4th or 5th gear and put the foot to floor the boost would start to chug baring in mind turbo is forced induction it sucks in air for compression at a greater rate than naturally aspirated

"Insert video"

I then put some holes in the induction lid to aid intake

IMG_20130816_120222_zps8f447eb5.jpg

IMG_20130816_120154_zps114c3396.jpg

This modification to the lid helped feed more air in at 1.5bar Boost but it didn't completely solve it chu chu effect

So i assumed it was down to the stock intercooler needing to be upgrade,

Didn't happen unless i was at full throttle in 4th or 5th gear which was only when overtaking.

The Green Cotton Performance induction filter then reached the end of its life,

It was either purchase a cleaning kit or a K&N57s

IMG_20150801_110126_zpsnuppojdq_edit_143

I went for the K&N57s kit,

The K&N filter has more oil on it compared to the Green Cotton Induction when it came out of the box brand new

Image2365.jpg

The K&N E-9289 induction filter isint a bigger cylinder than the stock or Green induction filter,

The K&N E-9289 has more pleates than the Green meaning it utilises the circumference of the cylinder much better resulting in greater induction aswell as greater filtration.

IMG_20150801_110353_zps6xpm820j.jpg

It is possible to purchase the K&N E-9289 without the K&N57s induction lid,

The E-9289 will fit comfortably inside the stock induction box lid.

The K&N E-9289 also boasts a side induction port,

IMG_20150801_112122_zpsxd2t7fjw.jpg

This provides direct cold air induction from behind the headlight in to the filter,

Some people assumed this was unfiltered air being taken in through the side,

Id like to point out that on inside view of the cylinder; the side induction is infact an inverted mushroom filter built in to the cylinder.

IMG_20150801_110101_zpsgi8irykn.jpg

My findings are:

The K&N has increased engine response to the point where the chu chu experience has been eliminated,

It provides an induction sound much the same as a sand blaster machine.

My fuel consumption has gone up by 1km per litre over Green resulting in 24km per litre.

Again now i know naturally aspirated engines don't require quite as much mass air flow and the main discussion is regarding a naturally aspirated petrol engine.

Still i thought id take some time to document findings and to say a final word:

If i had a 1.6 petrol id fit a K&N induction filter either a K&N57i or a panel filter aswell as some NGK iridium spark plugs and an oil catch tank between the crank case breather and induction pipe.

Who would have thought the big bad wolf was also a Ricer in a V-Tec Civic huffin and puffin because he didn't have turbo for a dump valve.

IMG_20150810_211934_zps4ls5mnvh.jpg

The three little pigs had a GTi Golf with of course a piggy back ECU system,

The BB wolf dropped by there garage to call em out on a drag racing for pinks,

Was mouthing off sayin his civic would smoke em like a pound of Bacon.

Pigs won em by 17 seconds on the quarter mile,

But soon after got a smack in the chops

From the po lease for racing on public road.

Sorry for the late replies/thanks. Just ended up with loads of emails saying this person replied, then he, and then 'e' and too much info, will make my head explode. So taking Time to read through now. I was reading How Lenny, you like NGK plugs. I've just fitted Bosch super4's and they've definitely made I difference. And just fitted magnecor leads, and it's just added that bit more economy and response improvements. I think regarding air filter, I'll just fit a replacement panel one. Some ppl say if you have induction kit, you need engine remapped to notice the benefits?

Possibly true regarding the filter mate,

An immediate differance would be noticed on a turbo engine as it would spool up quicker

But choice is yours
