Mondeo St220 Advice

I've become a great fan of the Mondeo and so looking to upgrade from the Ghia X to an ST220, now as we have so many great people on the site who like to help and offer advice, I'm after some advice on the ST220.

I'm being very specific on the type I'm looking for, as I want either the one with the cream leather interior or the red/cream, im also looking for the one with the Nav installed so I am aware it will take me a while before I spot one again (I've already seen one, just didn't have the cash at the time to purchase). Once purchased it will be going straight in for a full service and full drain on both oil and fuel.

So what do I need to look out for from the ST220, is there anything I should take into consideration before buying one. I'm hoping to pick one up around 50,000 - 80,000 on clock, as I know with my own that these engines will do at least 200,000 if they are looked after properly.

Anyway as always, all help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Can I ask why you would want to drain the fuel?

Good luck with your search.

From past experience with other cars, most use the cheap alternative fuels and though I don't blame them, though overtime I have noticed issues with higher performance. I'm a regular cleaner when it comes to oil and will be switching to premium fuel once drained, hopefully giving engine a new lease of life as it has done with the Ghia X.

Hi ZeEscort..what ghia x model did you have..I have a ghia x on a 55 plate with a 3.0 V6 heart and in the 0 to 60 times comes in at 7.9 seconds... in the ST its 7.5 seconds not a lot of difference..

I love any big engined ford..fortunately I don't have to factor in fuel costs..

I wanted an ST back in 09 but ended up with a very low mileage 1owner ffsh ghia x in panther black..long story...

I've driven a few STees and they do go through fast bends better due to lower stiffer suspension, although I plan lowering the ghia x I don't want the ride stiffend any more than needed as the roads were I live are pock marked and full of craters.

ST models do look oh so cool,my mate has a 54 saloon ST now the 4 door has it on looks...

My ghia x has the same engine except for the exhaust..

its a better design on the ST in so much that it provides an extra 20 horses ( I have a custom ss straight through zorst to address the shortcoming)..I've just replaced the spark plugs and vacum pipes wich necsetiates the UIM being removed, make sure this has been done.. the crankcase breather pipe lasts anything from 5to10 years before splitting, mine lasted just over 9yrs but only 52k miles on the clock, this is the same for the sparkplugs..and apart from the ESP system needing replacement a few months out of warranty ouch..£1200..

These engines will run and run very durable Porsche design at the start of its life which Mazda bought who in turn were bought by Ford back in the nineties.

. as long as you keep the oil clean and watch the cooling system, I change the oil yearly or 2-3 k, also had the cooling system flushed and spec refilled last yearand also steering fluid and brake fluid drained and spec refilled, all this should be done...and usually ST owners are a finicky lot and will of covered all these bases..like I say this engine has never left me at the side of the road wanting.. she has always started never failed but that's what I expected of this engine, they won't make them like this anymore..you won't regret buying one of these beasties...you will love the sound they make too well awesome..I've heard of these engines getting to ,200k..hopefully somebody who's actually has one or had one past or present might like to post about the pros and con's of ST ownership..

Hope you find a nice one ..its a buyers market so be fussy and don't buy a money pit, get a full service history..if it ain't present it ain't got any..don't get fobbed of with wild stories, myself I would buy one of these sought after motors of s private seller, your more likely to get an honest answer....
