Leaking Fluid Into Driver Footwell

Hi all!

Have a weird issue with my focus.... there seems to be a leak coming down the clutch pedal and into the foot well. Not a massive one but it's there! Looks like from the cylinder.

I recently had a massive power steering fluid leak and that's just been fixed. When the leak started, weeks and weeks ago, I marked all the 'bottles' in the bonnet where the liquid was. None of them have moved except for the power steering fluid, as mentioned.

I known issue I have is the seals gone on the bottom of the windscreen so rain could get in.

Any ideas?

Is the fluid water or is it sticky/greasy/coloured?

The type of liquid it is should point you in the right direction.

Clutch fluid should feel slippery/oily.

I would say most likely a master cylinder leak?

It does sit above the pedal.

Clear type oil.

Weird thing is that the levels in the monet is not going down. At all. It's been happening for about 2 months. No drop in level.

It can only be brake/clutch fluid.

Master cylinders on the mk1 are famous for leaking.

So the fluid in the bonnet is not going down still......however..... the window washer liquid is going down.

Could it be possible that somehow, these two are liked?

They should not be linked - totally separate reservoirs

  • 4 weeks later...
  • 2 months later...

So last couple of days I've Had A Small Puddle on the car matt. The liquid is clear and only very slightly oily. Not sticky. Looks like it is still coming out the cylinder but the bottle in bonnet hasn't really gone down. ... thoughts?

Also is it an MOT failure and how easy is it to change yourself

It's pretty straight forward, I can swap one over in around 20 mins and then another 5-10 mins to bleed it.

You'll need a set of spanner a, preferably ratchet as the bolts holding the master cylinder on take a while to unscrew otherwise.
