Hi all,im Steve and live in Spain. Had trouble with my 98 turbo diesel escort. Overheated quite badly due to cooling fan not working, due to poor connectoin in multi plug. Fixed fan problem but now got missfire on start up and hoses get very high pressure in them.I suspect head gasket, or are these heads prone to cracking???If so can the cracks be seen and obvious or are they hidden in the casting. Also ,does any body know the head tightening torques,so i have them when hopefully i put the engine back together!!

Thanks for all your help in advance.

M12 torxs, i think your getting confused and hence why you cant find one.

i think it may be a spline bit you are reffering too? they generally go in sizes, M10,M12,M14,M16,M18 etc (there are also alot of other sizes)

Torx go like T40,T45,T50,T55,T60,T70 etc (again there are lots of other sizes)

a torx looks like a 6 point star shape where as a spline will have 12 points probably(this can vary but the triple square 12 point is the most common)

I think you should have another look. even post up a pic if you can?

have a look here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torx

if you scroll down and have a look on the right hand side you will see a selection of drive types.

do you have a bolt that you could measure the widest part of the torx head?i.e across 2 points of the star shape. if you could get the size i could tell you the size of torx bit. even if you only got a rough size

hmm weird.

a T70 is 15.5mm P to P so that should be the perfect fit. a T80 is 17.5mm P to P. according to what i have here it also says you need a T70. what is the measurement from P to P of the bit they gave you?

Hooray, at last ive managed to locate a tool. The ford garage tool was too small even tho its marked as a T80!!!! Suddenly thought of a little workshop which is no more than a shack really.Went in and asked in my limited spanish ,and lo and behold he produced the correct tool from under a shelf in a grease soaked pot.He loaned it to me and didnt want anything for it,tho i shoved five euros in his top pocket with him protesting. The spanish are lovely people.

Lifted the head and found traces of water in number three cylinder.Gasket looks a bit black around fire ring in that area.Think good clean up and refitting will hopefully do the trick.

Thank you for all your help. Will post how it all goes, when ive got time to do it ,as very busy with work commitments at the mo.
