For the 1.8 do you mean the petrol or 1.8 TDCI?

1.8 TDCI is an old school Ford engine (8 valve, cast iron engine block) with the modern bits bolted on e.g. a turbo & common rail injection. The 2.0 TDCI is a Peugeot engine (16 valve, lighter weight aluminium engine block).

1.8 doesn't have a Diesel Particulate Filter (a good thing) & the 2.0 does have a DPF (not good a is expensive to remove or replace when it eventually dies/fills up). The 1.8 has about 15-18 BHP less than the 2.0 & is a bit less efficient. The 1.8 gets a 5 speed box & the 2.0 gets a 6 speed box which is handy for 70+ cruising on the motorway (fuel efficiency etc).

It I guess it comes down to which pros & cons are most important to you.

The 1.8 is pretty much bombproof.

Only things I ever needed doing to my old 1.8 was a new intercooler hose (very common) and ensuring I changed the fuel filter on every service (dirty filter can cause fuel pressure warnings and a limp mode).

The 1.8 is indeed a bit less refined but has excellent torque and cruises well on motorways.

Funnily enough I had to replace my intercooler hose last year due to the infamous hairline crack, a £35 silicon part ensured it'll never happen again. The fuel filter change is a bit of a pain in the !Removed! though, not just seating the seal correctly but bleeding it as well.

I've had the 1.8TDCi for just under a year and really enjoy the engine. Plenty of power available ; a few quirks which take a bit of getting used to but it racks up 110 miles a day and returns 62mpg so I'm happy!

Only issue I've ever had was fuel starvation due to an incorrectly installed fuel filter (garage fault).

Not all 2.0 TDCI's have DPF. Early ones like mine don't have one (good thing too).
