What Do You Look For On A Mobile Phone.

As listing says, what do you look for and what system, this is my main thing.

(i don't mean gaming)

I have a iPhone 5 and tried a Motorola moto g3 to get back to android but i failed.

I look for

Must have a goodish battery life about 2 days or just under.

Must not need apps to improve the phone, more apps less battery life and less ram.

I like iPhone and android in different ways but im not a ''sheep'' where i see the new iPhone

and have to have one,i wait for a year or so so its £100 or so cheaper and iron out a few bugs.

I always seem to go back to iPhone and use it as a phone for info or calls/text this is why i say

not for GAMES.

I've always gone for Android although I've only had 2 smart phones since around 2011, and only budget phones. Looking for a new phone soon and the things I look for are the latest version of Android, less than £200, no stupid UI on top of the standard Android system, and some other features that my Moto E doesn't have.

I like the look of the new Moto G especially the camera and the water resistance, but one fatal flaw is that they removed the compass which is just stupid. I never really consider anything from Apple because I don't like being ripped off, and I don't particularly like iTunes (I can drag and drop mp3s onto my phone which is the way I like it).

Also battery life as you mention. My Moto E will easily last 2 days, or it will last forever with just one hour charging each morning. I'd take that over a 20 core super CPU any day.

Has to be Android. Apple are inferior in every way these days and people are finally starting to realise. Don't get me wrong, Apple is fine if you don't care about gadgets and tech and you just want something locked down and idiot proof this is why i recommended one to my mum who doesn't know how to use a mouse.

I tend to buy 1 year old flagship Android models outright and then run them on a pay monthly contract. Works out so much cheaper and I can change whenever see a better deal or phone.

At the moment I've got a LG G3 which is an absolutely fantastic multi award winning phone. The new LG G4 is only incrementally better but costs £299 where a G3 is £199. It's a no brainer. Same goes for the Samsung S5, Sony Z4, HTC One M8, Huawei P8 etc. So many awesome phones that are cheap just because they are 'old'.

Then there are the Nexus phones with a stripped down pure Google OS with no bloat ware and early updates.

There's so much quality and variety out there why stick with Apple and just get the exact same thing force fed to you each year?

Unless you like that restricted simplicity of course.

Well said Dan. What's the battery life like on the G3, and am I right in thinking the LG phones are also made by Motorola and have a relatively standard Android UI? That could be one for me to look at.

Mate the battery life on the G3 is in 1 word 'AMAZING' and i mean that 100%.

I got 4 days and on 24/7 with a nice bit of texting and about 4 calls for 20 mins or so.

I think android is bang on with the lollipop system and M is due in the next month or so but a few things

that got to me with android based, keyboard for texting is bad and cant reach the A or 1 at times

with one hand texting and tried other apps but the same, could be width of the phone.

I use textra for messaging as std one is basic and options not there,i always seem to head back to iPhone.

Yes they are a rip off and i aint a itunes fan but i use it as a phone so itunes is only for updates not a lot else.

Like what they done with iPhone 6 with its bigger but the width aint a lot.

I could moan about both in ways but just seeing what others think about the like and dislikes.

If it came to i had to have 1 i would say my moto g 3 for 2 main things, the best battery yet and being less

restricted for things you can do like s.d card / music / apps etc.just drag and drop stuff.

It has got to be Android for a start so much better. Don't really have any MUST HAVE other than the Android as I Just upgraded from an S3 to an S6(brought outright PAYG). To be honest I'm disappointed with the S6, battery life is naff and the back is glass for god knows what reason, it's no quicker than the S3, same size and on a par performance wise. Oh but the camera is brilliant, there's a must have I forgot, must have a better camera than what I currently have, Ideally I'd like an external memory source but can't have it all in this day and age

When it first came out battery life on the G3 wasnt great because it was powering a super fast processor and a fantastic bright and pin sharp screen. Not sure how they did it but ever since updating to Lollipop the battery life is vastly improved. I get a days use easily and thats with me using Spotify for 6 hours a day plus the usual browsing etc. In turn i expect the battey life on the current crop of flagships to improve after Android M is rolled out.

Yeah the OS is stripped back and un obtrusive. I prefer it to Touchwiz on the Samsung.

You say at first,i thought the G3 came with the Lollipop as mine did from new, turned on and it was there.

I cant see why these phones are not better sellers as the battery is amazing,i have a G2 DUAL SIM 5'' and that's still good

like just touching into 3 days on the old OS with single sim, dual sim a bit less.

Tried Samsung a lot from S2 to S5 and S5 mini and battery was bad,i don't like 24 hour phones. lol

When the G3 first came out it was running KitKat. I bought mine brand new too but it was on KitKat and it auto-installed Lollipop the first time i switched it on as part of the initial set up. So i never experienced any of the rumoured problems with battery life its been great from day one with me.They're not best sellers as they dont have a slick advertising campaign thats it.

Any mobile telephone I've ever had must be able to make & receive . . . . . telephone calls :)

Android for me. Don't know too much about phones to be honest, all the techy stuff dosnt really interest me, as long as I can make a phone call with it that's all that matters, In saying that I liked a decant camera on it for when we were out offroading. But don't do that anymore so as long as it makes calls.

At moment I have a Galaxy s 4 or 5. Cant remember which one it is, contract up January but think I might stick to pay as you go next time. Only reason I had a contract phone was for work. Company now supply me with a phone. cheap wee nasty Samsung phone but battery can last anything up to a week.

ive got a galaxy s5 due an upgrade march/april next year.but i dont like the s6,

im hearing good reviews about the google nexus???

a function on this phone, battery saving mode is utterly amazing.you can switch it to basic grey screen etc and it will last up to about 10 days, phone and message function only.

like any new smart phone, battery will be limited on what functions you use and leave on,internet drains it rapidly.

I thought this on this G3 about leaving stuff on like wifi/4g/ and stuff, even taken all auto stuff off and battery saver i just

cant believe how it can last, loads of use out of it you would still get a good solid 3 days leaving on 24/7.

As for the nexus im sure they are made by Motorola like the G3 just more on it,G3 has a lot of the nexus things like camera.

Its amazing on here how many people are on android phones, some forums i have been on are Apple mad.

Half the stuff you will never use so why pay £350 to £500,my mates iPhone 6 is on par with my G3 on speed.

Tried it side by side on wi/fi and on 3G,4g would be the same if i wasn't on PAYG as G3 can take 4G.

The only place where it wins is gaming as i said i never look at phones for GAMES.

I use it for....calls/text and a bit of web browse like news or sport.

By the way iPhone are going, you will need a few car batteries in your pocket, smaller battery in 6s because of

new key touch 3d lol,i thought the word mobile was easy to carry like go where you go,we have gone back

10 years or so with the house brick phone.....ok lighter but still big.....rant over :)

^ I was going to say the reason so many of us use Android is because Android is for sensible people lol. But if you look at the popularity of Android it's not surprising that we all use it:

As for games, anyone developing primarily for iOS is probably not thinking things through when there are 6x as many Android devices out there.

Greg the Nexus phones and tablets are made by different suppliers each time around.

The current ones are the Nexus 6P made by Huawei and The Nexus 5X made by LG.

Before that the Nexus 6 was made by Motorola and the 5 was made by Asus.

Switching it up all the time keeps it fresh and the OS is nice and clean.

And as for only wanting your phone to make and receive calls, your loss. It might be called a phone but they are portable computers really. They are incredibly useful and beneficial no doubt about it.

ive had my s5 for well over a year, and every month im finding/being told of new things that it does.

on my tariff ive got unlimited everything,do i use it,not a chance.

trouble with them is they are really too complicated,if i want to look into the forums i use i will wait until i get home and browse them on my laptop, purely because i prefer to the bigger screen.

I could do with a new phone, mines getting on now (5 years) and showing its age!

What I want in the next phone -

Good wifi while sitting on the loo. Decent maps/GPS for when I've gone 'exploring' and got lost. Decent camera for taking many identical pictures of the same car in the same pose. Enough battery life to last all day doing the above.

S'pose it's useful to text now and then as well...

Every one use there phones for what there needs are and mine is not games at all.

I care for a person so a phone for me is a good and i mean good battery.

I don't want to have to think of another thing to do each day and be in a mess if i pop out quick with

low battery.

A lot have 2 phones for work and home but my work is at home so that went out the window.

The G3 is a 'middle of the road' phone for me,waterproof and good camera/texts/and browsing if needed.

Also a phone over 5'' big would not last me a day when i carry it,is there a 6.5'' phone now.

Is this a Tablet or a phone as there are tablets at 7'' or just under lol :)

Its not only a mini computer its everything,its a camera,its a organizer/reminder and more.

Other people want these things and others go to the game side......peoples choice.

Reminder is a massive plus for me for tablets and stuff, could say mine is for work use rather than playing.

I have just got a Lumia 640, which is Windows, but it does everything I need of it. It has a quad core 1.2ghz processor, 4G, the phone calls are clear as day, better than any other phone, 8mp camera, expandable memory to 128gb. Also comes with a year's subscription to Office 365. The GPS tracking is second to none, so it happily tracks runs, the only thing lacking is choice of apps. But with Windows 10 rollout soon on phones I am betting this will be one to keep your eyes on!

I'd disagree with you there. My S6 is MILES better than my S3. It's better in every single way. The glass/non removable cover is fine for me too, i have a gel case on it, i drop it a lot and don't have a single mark yet. I'm really pleased with it as it is a big upgrade from the S3, something that can't really be said for the equivalent iPhone.

I did try 2 Samsung before i went for this G3,i tried the S5 mini being smaller and the S4 but both i liked

just the battery was bad,4 in the morning untill say 11 on the night and only 20% or so left after a few calls and text.

That was no good for me,my old iPhone 5 can get very close to 2 days but just sick of Apple and how they rip people off.

Can i ask another thing with the 5'' plus phones of all people out there.

Do you have problems texting like hitting the wrong number/letter trying to text one handed.

Say the number 1 or the space bar sometimes don't leave a space being small on mine.

Or do you use another keyboard app.

I actually had this conversation with my mate earlier today after reading this post. I actually use all the different things on my phone more than I realised,

I deliver into a lot of different new build sites etc, so places like this are not on sat navs etc, yet the phone never fails to get to these places, plus other apps that are on the phone I probably just take for granted and just didn't think.

Mine is the Gaaxy s4, not the s5.

Think I just go for the Samsung because they are easy to work.

I have both the S6 (work phone), and G4. The G4 is better IMO - better battery life, removable battery, expandable storage, better camera (debatable though), and easier to grip despite it having a larger screen. The S6 is just a rip-off iPhone design - the glass/metal design is slippery and annoying.

With all this said, I'd rather go back to the days where we had dumb-phones, and talked face to face more often, and spent less time glued to our screens. I probably sound like an old !Removed! saying this, but hey :)
