After wanting an underseal sub then changing my mind, I'm after a sub again. This time a boot sub enclosure, but I'll admit I know next to nothing about them all I know is my husband said go for an active sub with built in amp or something.

So help, I'd like it installed and fitted for my birthday (4 weeks from now), so the race is on

I was going to suggest either Chicken pizziola, meatball marinara or tuna mayonaise, all three hearty Italian, triangle cheese, toasted and PLENTY of mayonnaise and if I get the 3 for £1 offer on the cookies then I ask for salad lol. Got to be healthy somewhere

I think a good starting place would be to have a budget in mind and whether you are willing to sacrifice boot space. Also, what type of music you would be playing. Subwoofer sizes go from 8, 10, 12 inches or bigger.

I would suggest looking at JL Audio 8" subwoofer in an enclosure if you want quality without sacrificing too much space. Pair it with a JL Audio Monoblock amplifier to power it, you will have a decent amount of bass.

Subwoofer:

Amplifier:

Another option would be to find a local car audio shop and having a chat with them to see what they have in stock and then let us know what they suggested due to your time frame.

I will do thank you, I'm more after depth of sound rather than a thumping bass (it'll be my 43rd birthday). Sacrificing boot space I don't mind as all I store in there is pop cans for work and cat food for the work stray

A bit on the pricey side this one but if you calculate the cost of purchasing sub, grill, amp and enclosure separately it's not a bad price,

Looks great, takes up minimum space and provides sufficient bass for the size of the vehicle

It's a great sub that you could always move to the next car actually. Lenny's recommendation would come out cheaper than my one with an amplifier properly matched to the sub.

Another option would be to go for an amplified 10" JL Audio subwoofer in a box. It will be a lot less expensive than the above.

+1

A 10" sub is said to be the best all rounder for music tastes,

Anything bigger begins to skip fast pace beats.

So if techno is your thing; two 8" sealed subs will blow your mind

If R&B crusing at 10mph Gangster Roll then a 15" ported will hold the long steady double bass.

10" is great for all tastes

Here's the 10" vesion with built in amplifier.

More expensive 😕

but as Hassan says you can purchase a JL sub in a box without an amplifier of course.

you would then need to purchase a matching power of mono amplifier and fit it separately or attached to the exterior of the enclosure.

Personally I think the sub with built in amp enclosure is much tidyer

can add a vibe FastPlug to the wiring making it very safe and easy to unplug in the event you need to fold down back seat to bring home a 4K 48" led TV in January Sales 👍

I've been looking at the brands fli and vibe, are they any good, the sub listed earlier is waaay over budget - budget is approx 1-200 quids, what would that get me? Anything decent enough for me? I don't listen to dance, techno or anything remotely like it - just modern pop and classic rock

Vibe are good value for money

sorry about the JL sub enclosure options there design and efficency are brand new technology to the market.

vibe can supply equivalent performance at half the price only difference being it will take up more space.

Hi laumk7 let me recommend an Alpine SWE -815 which can be bought for around £100. There's nothing out there at even double the price that comes close. I've got on in my focus (read my post mk3 focus audio upgrade ). Find a local car hifi dealer and they'll fit it for about 40 quid. With this sub you can control it from where you sit with the remote control. It controls the crossover frequency and the gain (volume if you like). Read reviews. One trusted review gave it 11 out of 10. But do have a chat with a car hifi dealer. Have fun.

if you are after some deep bass then you need a 12 or 15" sub.

Vibe are good, i have one in my car. as space isnt an issue then this is good news.

something like these will do the job but get a decent amp cable kit to provide the juice to keep it powered up

Fli (part of vibe audio i thinks but still good)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FU12-FLI-12-Active-Sub-Subwoofer-Amp-Amplifier-in-Box-Enclosure-1000w-/250967151095?hash=item3a6eced1f7:g:hDgAAOSwsB9WBlu0

Vibe 1200W (400w RMS - the figure you need to look at)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vibe-Slick-SLR12A-V2-12-Sub-Subwoofer-1200W-Active-Amplified-Enclosure-SLR12-/400465268839?hash=item5d3d971067:g:VsEAAMXQGcNSEjdH

Vibe 1600W (550w RMS)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vibe-Blackair-V12-Vented-Ported-12-Active-Sub-Subwoofer-Box-Enclosure-1600W-/360684054230?hash=item53fa71e6d6:g:AQQAAMXQ74JTPsxX

decent 4AWG wiring kit (the lower the number the thicker and better the cable)

I emailed fli, and they've come back to me with this: http://shop.vibeaudio.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=59_64&product_id=253

Any good? I was really after a box type thing as pictured above(which I really do like incidently) but, well, I'm open to change if necessary

I also emailed a local car audio centre and they've recommended a *2 (12?) Phoenix gold slim enclosure

Both have only just got back to me

Looks good to me,

Perhaps check Halfords online to see if they stock it,

If they do then they probably have it on display in there stores meaning you could go and have a listen.

chances are; Halfords are more expensive but I always go there for a look then go home and purchase on eBay for less lol

Perhaps purchased from cheapAZchips 😀

does your partner have some tools?

There's guides on here for fitting subs excetera save you potentially 70 quid it's quite simple process.

He fitted his own sub back when he had his old car, but I was after having mine professionally fitted tbh, I see where you're coming from though

What about this one? Any good?

http://www.halfords.com/technology/car-audio/car-amps-subs/vibe-slick-bass-pack-system

I notice it's passive with a separate amp, in real terms what does that mean (sorry to sound thick)

Passive sub means there's an opening in the sub box to allow air circulate in and out, as you can see in my image below large port on top right side of 15" sub ☺

This makes bass mainly in noise form puts it in the air doesn't send out much vibration as it does wind 🔊💨

Picture005.jpg

Other option is a sealed enclosure

this gives Jurassic park T-rex type bass,

Not hear it as much as you feel it in your chest and panels as you can see in my image below the enclosure is air tight no ports atall results in a vibration style is nice 😀

the kit you linked for Halfords looks spot on.

If fitting to factory headunit you will also need an RCA adaptor

I had a Vibe Slick 10“ Sub before and it was very good at that price point.

I prefer the Vibe Slick Bass pack out of the two options. I think that these compact enclosures at the lower end of the price point are a compromise on sound quality. To get good bass, you need a certain amount of volume in the enclosure and the Vibe Slick should tick all the boxes.

Remember that if you have the FOC Card, you get 15% off anything in Halfords. Makes getting the card all worth it :)

Well your well and truly spoilt for choice with all these sub recommendations. Chat more with your local car hifi dealer as he'll be the one who fits it and sets it up. Though go for one you can control with a remote control because a lot of the time you will want to alter settings to suit each CD.

Hi. That'll be a good sub but try the Alpine SWD-355. It's also a 12" and it's the BIG brother to my sub and it comes with a remote control. Similar price. Doesn't come with a wiring kit tho bug that's no bad thing as your car hifi dealer will sort that out. When I picked my car up from my fitters I noticed a box similar to what my sub cam in. I asked about it and they said it's the 12" of yours and it's (expletive) LOUD. But with the remote you can tone it down coz after all you don't want to drown your Fiestas car Speakers do you!

Just Googled it and ooh I like that one more  does active mean it doesn't need a separate amp?

Made a decision (I think), on this: http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/subwoofers/sub-amp-packs/alpine-sbg-12kit-subwoofer-pack

Has anyone used this company before / have any opinions of the package before we lay down any cold hard quids?

I bought all the equipment saw in the green car from caraudiodirect and there a great supplier but on comparison quite expensive;

There site is great for sourcing items specfic detail as they document everything aswell as the ability to compile a shopping list.

I done my research and shopping list on there website then shopped around.

end result I got everything cheaper elsewhere except for some gold plated spade connectors at 3.74 pounds
