Heater Blower - Old Topic,old Problem!

Hi All,

I have been through nearly all of the 1014 pages and searched many different types of heater blower topics and have come to the decision that I don't have many more options to try before I panic!

My new edition to the front drive is a Y reg-2000 1.6 Focus. I rescued her from the scrapyard and she is driving quite nicely......only its a bit cold and steamy! Yep, you've guessed it - the heater blower fan thing doesn't work! Having read through various bits and pieces I figured this would be a doddle! I managed the snapped cam belt, rotted chassis rails, busted suspension and the stains..........but I haven't got any air!

The blower wasn't working when I picked her up and it wasn't working for the previous owner on any of the settings. I figured that it was the fuse. Nope, fuses were fine and in the right slots. Next was the resister pack as this seems to be the most common issue so bought a new one and (eventually!) fitted the new one - fiddly and lots of swearing! The old part actually looked brand new and there were no signs of damage or distress but swapped it anyway. Whilst I was at it, I took the motor out and had a good look and play - the part moved freely and there was no resistance, noise or discolouration that I could see. So I moved on to the control switch. Again I found this fiddly as I took the whole assembly to pieces before realising that I only needed to do one bit! But I had a good look at the other bits and they also seemed in top notch with no signs of damage.

I could see no obvious damage to any of the wires that were visible but am I right in thinking that my next option would be to check the flow of power through these wires? This is the daft bit but how do you use a multi meter?! The one I have came from Halfords and had no instructions and basically I have no idea how to use it! To me its an orange block with funny squiggles on it and 2 wires! I turn the dial to volts and touch the wire with the 2 pointy things? 1 black and 1 red but where do I place them? I take it I have the ignition on, and the blower on to enable power to travel to wherever it goes to - or not go to.

My brother has said to tell you that the engine fans seem to be on permanently - could this be anything to do with the internal blower not working? As in someone has done some sort of bodge job to keep engine cool? Or is this a different matter?

Any help would be fantastic, especially in the teaching of multi meter use!

When you had the motor out it would have been a good opportunity to connect 12V to it to see if it would run. It sounds to me like the motor itself is stuffed, probably brushes worn out. It also sounds like you're not too knowledgeable about electrics but would like to learn so I would suggest you find someone who is to give you a few tips.

Just had a similar problem on my sons punto ended up being a bad earth connection in the multi plug just bridged the earth across and all is ok know so might be worth having a look at the feed to the fan motor .

Checked the brushes on the motor? just fixed one £4.50 for the brushes.Ebay or do they not have them? it wasn't a ford
