james_60
is there any oil in the turbo intake pipe Jamie
Kcr4cer
I have checked the pipes and no splits or anything but I did notice oil on the inside of the turbo inlet pipe.
dogdays1
"The belt should be changed sooner rather than later. The timing belt doesn't run the water pump on this model." You're right, I remember the earlier model had a separate drive for the pump. I had this engine on a Escort years back and made up a tool to position the crankshaft via the little threaded hole in the block. Still got in somewhere. If you are paying labour it's worth doing the lot whilst they are at it. It's bit like changing a clutch and not changing the release bearing assy. The question is how far do you go on a 2003 motor car, as one thing can all to easily follow another.
John2015
The oil inside the turbo pipe in normal nothing to worry about Sent from my iPad using Ford OC
Kcr4cer
I know what your saying dogdays, I normally would not bother but I got the car for next to nothing and other than the current problem it's in mint condition, it has full service history and I am only the second owner, it is a very well looked after and pretty nice car. It is in the garage now and will know more on monday. I think I will take into account what I paid for it and add it to the cost of repair and then I will know if it has been worth it. Fingers crossed I don't have to sell one of the kids 😜
dogdays1
If it's in good nick and you like the car go for it, as these old Focus Diesels can go on forever. My Diesel 1.8 focus estate got to 173,000 before I sold it. It that time apart from the scheduled service items it had had a new DMF plus rear suspension bushes and exhaust. I don't think the Endura 1.8 Diesels are known for camshaft problems, but you can never tell. The bucket shims are though rather expensive if you need to reshim the whole 8 valves. I don't suppose it's just that you are hearing a mechanically internally noisy injector ticking, I don't mean diesel knock?
Kcr4cer
I have thought about the injectors as it would make sense with the starting problem, the smoking seems to have disappeared too (maybe some oil got somewhere it should not be while I uave been tinkering) it's in the garage now and the mechanic suspects it could be a rocker arm. He reckons anywhere between 150-700 quid for repair, depending on whether the engine has to come out and what parts are needed. All I can do now is wait and see. Cheers for the input guys will be sure to let you know the outcome.
dogdays1
As you have mentioned rocker arms in you post I wonder if we are all talking about the same engine, as my 1.8 TDCI 4 cylinder 8 valve Endura Diesel did not have rocker arms, as the cams worked directly onto the valve buckets.
Kcr4cer
Maybe we are, as I'm pretty sure mine is a lynx diesel 1.8 tdci? the only visual difference I can see from the top of the two engine's is the lynx diesel has the cam sensor bolted on top of the rocker casing, the endura does not. I'm not sure but I think the endura is slightly newer.
MONDEO TXS 2.2
The Lynx is the older engine & was rebranded as an Endura DE & then developed into the Duratorq DLD 418

dogdays1
Dear All Yes you are indeed correct about the history of the Lynx engine, but it's only a few mods that were done, nothing really was that different in the overall design layout of the block and camshaft. I seem to remember that the old 1.8 lynx engine on my old Escort had bucket and shim adjustment for the valves. I say this as I changed the timing belt and I distinctly remember the cam shaft had the locking bar slot in the cam end, same as the Endura. So why is this mechanic talking about rocker arms on his TDCI Diesel to Kcr4cer?
Kcr4cer
Hi just to let you know that the car needs a new cylinder head, which is going to cost more than I am willing to spend, so it looks like it's going to the scrap yard. Thanks again guys 😀
dogdays1
Please tell us all what's gone wrong with the head? This engine is not known for this issue.
Kcr4cer
It has a crack? Not sure how it has happened though, as soon he said it needed a new cylinder head I sort of just gave up on it and took it home. Just need to decide my best option with it now. Gray J
Update on mine finally... have had engine flush & oil/filter change & engine seems good, mechanic did some checks as still getting spluttering at just below 2k revs & still getting tapping at low revs, have picked up that one of the fuel injectors is a lot noisier & a different sound to the rest, in my head I'm thinking/hoping this is the problem... has anyone else experienced this or have any knowledge on this subject? Harri97
Hi, Did anyone else on this thread get to the bottom of this sound?
