Power Stutters

I have a 05 2lt TDCI and i have notice a acceleration power issue ...when i accelerate hard the car stutters slightly and seems to hold back momentary ...I have no warning lights the car ticks over ok no noises etc ..i do tend to do a lot of short journeys and i do have a thermostat which i believe maybe sticking open as during the summer the water temp needle reached 90c , but in the winter rarely goes above 60c could the 2 be connected , or could there be something a bit more sinister going on ...many thanks ..

'' I do tend to do a lot of short journeys '' = that's the worst kind of engine operation for any diesel engine - give it a high engine revolution blast for half an hour or so on a very regular basis ( aka Italian tune up ) & that should help

At least 3500 rpm for at least 20 mins, need to get evrything good and hot to burn off the accumulated sooty deposits

Thanks for the info , I been on a run and found that when I applied power below 3000rpm there seemed to be a delay or juddery pick up for a second , then all seemed fine it was more pronounced in 4th gear ..I tried running her hard at 3.5k rpm and got the engine got nice and hot ..and definitely smelt of hot diesel. i have checked all the joints and fittings from the filter , fuel rail and injectors, and no evidence of leaks ...Tonight I put a bottle of Redex advanced in the tank ..and set the cruise control for 3.5k rpm 4th gear for nearly 20mls ....before giving a good acceleration broke the speed limit for a bit lol , still juddered a bit but didn't seem as pronounced ..I will get the fuel filter changed just in case as i have not had it changed ...I hope it is a simple as that ..i am dreading if it is turbo , injectors or pump as i have been told they are prone to these expensive failures ...

It really could just be a leak. Sometimes you can't easily see them, and the mention of the smell of hot diesel makes it sound more likely.

Have you checked the seals to the injectors with the engine running, or just 'statically'? the rubber seals can also go a bit hard/perished, and they tend to leak a bit then.

Also, the air to and from the intercooler could leak.

Another possibility would be a partly blocked fuel filter, particularly if it hasn't been changed recently (how long, what fuel does it normally run on)?

I checked all the joints i could find (top of engine) with the engine hot and not running the smell ..every thing was dry no signs off wetness ...the intercooler hose , I suspected a possible prob with that before as got a lot off smoke and found it was very gunky in places Ibut could not see any splits etc i have got a new one in the boot....the fuel filter , has not been changed since i have had the car over a year now and i run it on super market diesel or the cheapest i can get ....I have been told it is a specialist job as it needs priming with a vacuum pump , besides the bracket supports are broken and it is held on with cable ties...I will have to play it by ear for now as totally skint ..unless there is a kind sole in Ipswich who could look and advise for a drink lol

See if you can try to have a look around with the engine actually running, if it is a 'blow' it might be more obvious, and if it is a leak to somewhere hot, it may be evaporating off before you get there.

The fuel filter is a problem; you probably don't actually need to prime with a vacuum pump, but it will likely be a bit of a pain. Just more of a pain without the vacuum pump. What with the problem of securing it, that sounds like a job for someone else! As it may or may not be anything to do with the filter, you probably have to try to eliminate other things first.

I haven't really had identifiable troubles with supermarket fuel - plenty on here will tell you that they have, but, apart from low mpg on the Asda stuff, I can't say that I'm one of them, and, with a busy supermarket, I feel you are less likely to get water (/any rubbish from the bottom of their tank) in the fuel than with an isolated country station - but I'd still want to try Shell/BP/Esso for a short period, to see if that makes a difference.

hi Bof..thanks for your replies ...The chap at our works garage has said he will have a look as he owes me a favour ....I have a boost hose so i may try and fit it myself unfortunately the best of my tinkering days are long gone ..however when i thought about it , it has always had the hot smell since i had it after being used to petrol I thought it was normal ...I will have to keep finger crossed and hope it is just clogged up somehow ...perhaps the redex will do its job

Hi all...Ok today the stutter got very pronounced car seemed very sluggish so I called the AA , i had forgot I have a repair warranty..I had checked everything advised but found nothing ...He plugged in his reader and the only fault code was a battery/charge code when i looked again I saw the problem straight away ...The turbo bosot hose had a massive split ...we didn't see it earlier this week ...I actually had a spare silicone one which he fitted , so far everything seems better , definitely more power i will have to wait and see , at least there were no injector faults found ...So thanks all for advise ...

I think that it looks as if you can call that a result (assuming that nothing nasty turns up subsequently).

With some trepidation, if something (bad) does turn up, do post back, but, if you don't, it will look as if you really did cure it.
