alexp999
Petrol or diesel is going to depend on the mileage and type of journeys you do. I personally would avoid the 1.6 tdci due to the amount of issues I read about. And for trim zetec would be my minimum recommendation. Others just get you more kit depending on what you want and budget.
toffee1878
Thanks for the quick reply,my journeys will consist of plodding around town, trip to the next town about 10 mile away once a week and maybe a few 90 mins trips down the motorway. My budget is around the 4K mark
MONDEO TXS 2.2
Definitely go for a petrol engine with that kind of low mileage
Dee_82
A few 90min trips down a motorway. Is that a week a month year? The 1.6tdci is fine if its given plenty of TLC, but if you do only do a few thousand a year with very few long trips than any diesel is a bad idea
toffee1878
I'd say at a guess I would do between 8k and 10k a year, looking for a car with good spec I like the titamuim but don't seem to many of them around
Dee_82
i do about 14k a year minimum, in terms of millage the vast majority of that is long distance so its a no brainer for me, course I'm going to stick my fingers in my ears and sing lalalala if you talk about how much of that saving of fuel ive spent on looking after the car :) id say if your not getting at least 2 long runs of more than 30 miles a week then don't bother with diesel especially the DPF equipped 1.6 TDCI, anything up to a one way trip of 10 miles, 20 round, is petrol territory, diesels have terrible mpg for the first 5-7 miles or so, much worse than a petrol, so if your doing a 20 mile round trip to work, you will only get slightly better than average mpg for the last 3-5 miles which is completely offset but the crap mpg on the first 5-7 miles. I reckon most folk should be buying a petrol, I think most of the horror stories of the 1.6tdci are from users who didn't drive it as it should be driven. my car is getting some damage fixed to it and they gave me a petrol as a replacement, its costing me a fortune in petrol, it is MUCH quieter i will admit but it drives like a sack of crap, blody Astras!
biff55
Thanks for the quick reply,my journeys will consist of plodding around town, trip to the next town about 10 mile away once a week and maybe a few 90 mins trips down the motorway. that doesnt equate to 8000-10000 miles a year , not even close. stick to petrol , it will handle short journeys better than that lemon of a 1.6tdci engine. ZetecShearer1987
Yeah petrol sounds a good option plus the petrol prices are coming down to which is another positive. The 1.6 petrol is an ok engine, no real power or torque. Might be worth looking at the 1.8 petrol or 2 litre. Yes it's a higher tax bracket and lower mpg, but pootling around town you aren't really on a fuel economy run are you. I've always had the 1.6 petrol on my focus and it's the best of both worlds without ever exciting you
