Hi my names Alan, not sure if this is the correct place to post or not if not sorry.

Anyway to the problem t hand. Yesterday I bought the car I hadn't been able to test drive it properly my self as I wasn't insured and wasn't taking any chances so I let my sister test drive it for me. Car was running great from what I could tell. Now I have never owned a desiel before so m in new water here.

Well first of all I got the car looks great and drives great from what a can tell got insurance got all new tyres and so on. But last night I heard this problem well I think it's a problem that's why am here.

No noise when taking off but when the revs hit 1600RPM there is this weird noise and it stops just before 2000RMP sounds abit of a rattle? This only happens when driving not when stationary.

Now I don't no weather this could be cause of a split in a hose some were or what? There is no excessive black smoke and from what I can tell there is no loss of power. But then I never drive that car before so don't no it's full pulling power but from what a can tell it still pulls like crazy so any help would be great about this? Hopfully Notting to worry about at least.

Lastly as its my first time taxing the car could any one with a simalar car guide me on how much 6 months road tax would be? Seen a few places online stating £99 for 6months just wanted to be sure

what car and engine? you have two different ones on your profile :p

First off, a rattle noise like that, could be as simple as worn engine mounts, or could indicate worse such as DMF failure.

Was this a private sale? or a garage job?

Sorry didn't realise I had two diff ones lol.

It's 2lt TDCI 115 2007 ford mondeo edge. Was asking about other places and people were saying seeing as no loss in power or anything it could well be the intercooler mount or a pipe rattling against another. As its only happening between 1600-2000 rpm but as soon as pass that rpm it disappears. But if I don't put the foot down and let the car crawl up the speed there is no sound from it if that makes sense lol

Ahhh, ok, I actually had a similar issue.

Check under the front end, you should have a crossmember that goes between the wheels, the exhaust drops down to just above this point. Make sure there is enough clearance, I buckled mine (long story) and it started rattling like no tomorrow, so rectified it and it resolved.

If that doesnt work, I would suggest getting the engine up to temperature, have someone hold the revs while you have your head under the bonnet, see if you can track the area of the noise. Normally at 1600 - 2000, thats where the boost kicks in, so the air system is under more load, if its not breathing properly, more fuel and less air could be causing the engine to work harder, that could translate to more vibration and if the engine mounts are worn that could explain the knock.

it was a common problem on the mk3 that the bottom intercooler pipe rattled against the sub frame and was cured by wedging some foam inbetween the pipe, but not heard of this on the mk4 but its one thing to check.

Ok thank you both for your help will try this to see if this will resolve the problem. I was driving home and tested it again.

Cruising along with moderate boost/turbo usage there was no rattle what so ever the car still pulled like a turbo.

I then gave the car abit of a push and accelerated harder and there it is the we rattle between those revs.

So I'll look and see if I can find the problem that use pointed out again thank you so much for the help.

Also I think mine is the mk3 it's January 2007 so it's not the newer shape one

aaah OK in which case its quite likely to be the MK3, very few MK4's came on an 07 plate.they were mainly dealer pre orders, or demonstration cars to get the hype up.

Personally I have only seen two in the last 8 years!
