Radiator fans do not come on with or without ac

So my 2002 2.0 focus won't turn its fans on, with or without ac on and the needle nudging the red. I've checked the fuses and the relays and they seem to be fine. I've applied power directly to the resistor and the fans work. I'm stumped at what to check next.

Faulty temperature sensor showing overheating when in fact the temperature is 'normal'?

Cheers Russ. I think it must have been a dirty connection some where as both fans now seems to be working fine. Here's hoping it's nothing more!

first sign of the sensor going is intermittent working itll work fine then go into the red etc
