Gemma - cut your losses. Given the problems and bad luck I fear that you will spend £,000's you will never get back and every chance that it will get vandalised again. It might be the last but you have to know it's not your role in life to save it.

I think I can (at least partly) understand how you feel about your car. A car that has been with you through some critical or important times gets linked with those feelings, Then losing the car makes you feel like you are losing part of yourself. One or two of the cars I have had, though nothing special, have triggered that feeling in me, though it did not last too long. But this one seems to have a very special meaning to you.

Is the car in a dry garage, or suitable shelter? If not, I think that is priority 1. I do not think there is going to be a quick fix to this. From what you say, it is a bit like the proverbial old kettle, which is fine apart from needing a new lid, new spout, new handle, and new body.

A full restoration on any older machine or vehicle can take years of painstaking work. And quite a lot of money. It needs to be a labour of love, but one that is possible and affordable, or it will just lead to more tears. It is something I know a little about, my father used to restore vintage motorcycles. It was a major part of his life, often frustrating, sometimes rewarding.

I am not convinced that any commercial garage can do the job. For a dedicated enthusiast to take on a job like this, there has to be some reward, and that is usually to own and enjoy the result of the restoration afterwards, and that may not be acceptable to you.

If you can protect the car to gain time, then there is a chance someone will eventually appear to take it on.

Have you considered learning the skills, like welding, machining, and general car mechanics? There are courses, it would take money & time. But it seems some people (more men than women, but far from 100% split) have a natural aptitude for mechanical things, and many more don't. It would be no good trying to do something you just can not do.

If you want to restore this vehicle, then first stop further deterioration, look at all the options, keep looking for help, and be prepared for a long, possibly hard, journey.

Good luck, I hope you eventually resolve this in a good way.

Peter.

That is the trouble with working on cars, it so often involves getting into very awkward and uncomfortable positions, to fit or remove difficult to get at parts. It was easier for me quite a few years ago, when I was more flexible, but my back and other joints are less tolerant of abuse these days!

Not so bad once you can get bits off, and up onto a bench to work on, but a lot of work has to be done on the car.

My advice, for what it is worth:

Keep hold of your dream or plans, but don't let it dominate your life. It may take some time.

Keep plugging away at forums & local advertising.

If someone does step forward, do some investigations first, or give them a small part of the project initially. You do not want another john aird job!

Good luck,

Peter.

hi gemmatdi, if you still have the car and want it restored 100% l know the perfect person for the job, in thee picture shown he has restored the Mk 6 l now own, the Mk 5 xr3i is at 90% just a few bits left to track ( replacing interior bits ) also as seen in the picture at the point of time an Austin metro which you can see he was working on, the only thing is it would have to be brought to him. In Hull ? He probably would have everything needed apart from the the engine ( probably has a hidden 1 😂 ) stored, he's a ford parts hoarder so if you was will l know he definitely would as he can't help himself when it comes to fixing a ford.
