It is time this myth of "14 days to receive a NIP" and the police can't prosecute you was properly put to bed. As Clive says they have 14 days to issue you a NIP a totally different thing, it actually does no matter when you get or even if you don't actually get it, as long as they have issued it within 14 days then you can still be fined/points/awareness or court.

I will never understand why people think they can get away with speeding just because they didn't receive a letter within 14 days.  Just like people think they can get away with not paying for gas/electric because they didn't get a bill.  IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT.

If your speedometer needle goes above the limit for that area, expect to be penalised.  If you get away with it, be grateful - and if you do get a letter, don't kick up a fuss because "they didn't tell me within two weeks!".

I won't lie - I'm no saint and am almost certain that at some point during my driving career I will receive a speeding ticket, but the difference is that I would accept it and take the consequences.

My motto is "do it if you want, but don't come crying to me if you get caught".

To be honest I'd never heard of it lol.  Got the thingy through the post rang up and asked if I could do a course she said no so I paid the fine over 2 months as obviously £300 + is a bit much short notice lol.  I know it's obvious that it was me speeding as 1.  It was my car & 2.  No one else drives it lol.  It's my own fault so if I didn't want a speed ticket I should of paid more attention & not sped.  So what's the point in appealing the ticket?

In a 40mph zone no penalty will be applied until over 46mph.

66mph or more in a 40mph zone will result in a prosecution persuing a ban.

60mph in a 40mph zone would incur a fixed penalty of £100 with a 3 point endorsement irrelevant of how long a licence has been held.

Of course a probationary period exists on new drivers for 2 years after which the full points entitlements is available.

Generally, more than double the speed limit or 30 mph over, whichever is least, will mean court. Doing 60 in a 40 will probably be fixed penalty fine and 3 points.

A friend of mine went on the course and he also got told that if you are caught speeding the owner of the vehicle got to have the letter within 14 days,if not you can appeal and they can squash the case.Whether most forces obey that rule or not I can't answer but this particular police force is. If the vehicle is franchised then allow over 14 days for them to be able to track the correct owner at the time.

He was misinformed.

The NIP only has to be posted within 14 days.

Just to add to the equation, my friend was caught at just shy of 70 in a 50mph average speed limit section on the motorway and only got a speed awareness course so sometimes they end up being lenient.

To be honest hes been driving 2 months why is he driving like a complete idiot to begin with? Normally 40 areas are somewhat residential also. Its a bit like this complete idiot the other day on motorway i was doing 80 and this rs6 came flying past easily doing over 130 the car shook he was that close and going that fast.

For him to do 60 in a 40 he deserves a nice fine i have no sympathy but maybe thats because the accident i was in, the driver of the coach was speeding and on his phone and got away pretty much scotch free and now ive got to suffer for the rest of my life with back pains.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, hopefullt he learns whatever he gets.

Something we agree on!!  I know I speed, mostly not intentionally (yes, sometimes intentionally on empty backroads at night lol, it's a great stress reliever!), and if I receive a fine, fair cop, I'll pay it if they've got proof...unless its one of those mick taking '34 in a 30 first offence' fines, if I'm caught I want it to be a decent one.

I don't know whether I've just got rubbish speed perception or if it's just the fact modern cars are so much more comfortable, refined and quiet, and with low down VNT boost that you don't really feel compared to conventional boost where you get nothing then a kick up the backside, I honestly can't tell speed without looking.  Don't think I'm ever at the right speed unless on cruise control, even when I think I am I look down and am over (or under, car dependant!).  I know it's not just me because when I'm on cruise control I'm always playing cat and mouse with other cars that presumably can't hold a constant speed - though this often happen in the average camera area...some people really don't understand how average speed works, you cant just boot it between the cameras!

I've been taking more notice of it since this thread.  I went for an overtake yesterday in a 60 limit - the person in front cut me up from a junction and sat at 40 (you know the ones!), long, clear, straight road so I planted it past, watching the road, not the speedo, fairly sure he accelerated at the same time but can't prove that, anyway pulled in past and dropped into 5th and the speedo's reading 80...what!?  From a 40mph overtake...  Best part is a bike also overtook me at the same time (think bike, think w**ker  ) so if I was doing 80 I can only assume he was in 3 figures!! His overtake may have made my speed feel less though, not sure!  I get the opposite problem in the GTi6 though, it's just so loud and uncomfortable, and with the awful Toyo Proxes has very little grip in the wet.  I actually find myself cruising at 60 in it believing it to be 70 and wondering why so many people are passing!

That's the problem, right there.  Speed in itself is not dangerous!  It's distractions that are dangerous...talking on the phone, eating, drinking, arguing with passengers, checking the baby/dog, doing your make up, shaving, watching p**n on your phone, changing CDs, adjusting the cabin temp...all FAR more dangerous at 30 than doing 60 in a 40 is.  I've had more near misses and close shaves to kerbs trying to change a CD or turn the heating up at 30 than I ever have at 80 or 90 where I'm concentrating and not risking any distractions...  It's distractions that we should be focussed on (no pun intended), but that's difficult to police, speeding fines are easy and make more money...

I agree with that comment to be honest. However the amount of clowns ive had issues with that have been under 20 is unreal. However i shouldnt be judgemental. Last night was sat eating tea in a car park and two young girls in a ka pulled out the car parking space in reverse and put it in 1st away they go, so youd expect... no instead that poor engine was crying for the driver to lift the clutch. Anyway they finally get going and passenger has the door open and interior light on.

By all means im not one for been under the limit. I have had a speeding ticket luckily got a course and was pulled for speeding but was given a verbal.

I think everyone speeds a little some times, I don't know anyone that's just stuck to the speed limit their whole life. At night when its super quiet and you are on a back road, you do let it rip.

If you are going to speed then as Tom says, if you get caught theres no point crying about it.

A mate of mine needs his car for work.   He is an IT specialist and travels a huge number of miles per year.   He built up 12 points for speeding and was taken to court where he lost his license and is now out of work.   So the magistrates don't always take your job into account.

They will always take it in to account but that doesn't mean it is a free pass. They just try to make sure the punishment is proportionate to the offence. If someone speeds excessively and frequently in a short space of time they are asking to loose their licence.

You are right there!  Here in the "back o' beyond" there are quite a lot of long roads which have no speed/ANPR cameras and I won't deny that the 405 has exceeded the 60 (and 70) marks occasionally...  I am a firm believer that on main roads speeds of up to 80MPH are perfectly safe, under the right circumstances.  But because people are idiots and don't know when it is and is not safe to go above 60, the law has to be that no vehicle can at any time exceed it.  But, there are a lot of things people do that they aren't supposed to...

tell your mate to say he's a footballer and a fine/ban would cause him untold hardship, then he'd get off a bit more leniently !

I'd love for you to finally answer a question bugging me for a while...
I thought if you're caught speeding, you have to attend caught and state why? I'm hoping this is false, as it's a joke if so!

It is a perk but of course we have to justify excessive speed and using the lights without due cause is a disciplinary offence.

you attend a 3 week course where you are taught techniques and exemptions that we may use but other road users cannot. Generally speed cameras catch you, it goes to a big office where they check you were on an emergency call. If the speed is deemed too high then you will have to justify why you did it.
