Could this be my head gasket

Hi All i need a bit of help, ive always been taught when a head gasket goes there would be a mayonnaise substance in the water tank or on the oil cap but mine dosent have any. Ive just done a 400 mile round trip and shes emptied the water tank twice, shes running like a bag of bolts on idle and man is she drinking alot of petrol now but i guess that's due to the fact shes trying to compensate for the erratic idle. I don't have massive amounts of white smoke but i did see some when i was stuck in traffic on the way home today. I also have a whistling nose from the back middle towards the right near the battery and i think that's a vacuum hose but i am going to look for that later i don't think that could be a symptom of a head gasket. I was wondering if this could be the head gasket as i am not looking forward to stripping the engine down :S I have a 1995 LX Ford Escort 16v 1.6 EFI engine. Thanks for your help all :).

Hi I have a 1.8 turbo diesel mk6 escort equipe and it recently was doing the same thing and  I thought it was the hg but like you I was brought up with mechanics saying milky oil but there was none unfortunately in my case it was hg two days after he started huge bang belts coming flying off oil poured out from the hg section of my engine apparently my hg was so bad it literally destroyed my engine I'm not saying.it's the same as mine but best check it before wreck it I'm currently looking for donor to replace my engine but no luck hope you have better luck than me keep us posted :-)

Safest test for leaking HG (on Petrol cars) is to check the coolant water for combustion products (eg CO). Not sure this is a DIY job, but any garage can do it, may be for free if they know you & get to quote at least, for the replacement job.

Looking inside the crankcase ventilation hose is a better test than the oil filler cap, for the oil-water emulsion.

On an older car, when new HG may not be economic, you could try K-Seal. It worked on my Vauxhall Vectra, though it was scrapped about 9 months later due to failure to pass MoT emissions test, I suspect the leak had ruined the Cat. They do not like antifreeze. I do not think the K-Seal was the fault.

Peter.

Ok 110% is looking like the head gasket, i noticed a nice puddle of water under the car, she had been sat there for about 3 hours after a 30min drive. So i started to investigate, its coming from the belt side and i cant see anything from the top but i can see the leak from the bottom just not where is coming from so i am thinking maybe the water pump. Heres the best bit all, i have a nice smell of petrol in the water tank bottle and i can see little bits of petrol in there. So i am also thinking maybe its the head gasket also. I am off out to buy a nice 2000 plate escort as a donner car if the new escort dosent pass its mot.Ether way any ideas to the issue would be awesome all.

She is also running like a bag of bolts while idling :S
