Guest
Hi all, Was wondering if anyone knows what really needs to be declared to insurance, 'modifications' is quite a broad term. For example: do i need to declare new bulbs, wind deflectors and stick on badges? Just curious
alexp999
It depends on the insurer, you'll need to ask yours what needs to be declared and what doesn't. bulbs are generally okay as long as they aren't intended to significantly increase light output (e.g. HIDs).
jeebowhite
As a rule of thumb, unless you swap like for like, do declare it. If you buy an off the shelf replacement (I. E. bulbs from halfords) then you are trying to swap like for like, however if you are adding something that was not there or changing something from how it looked or performed as it left the factory, tell your insurer. Some may be accessories, such the insureray not care, others though could be enough to be considered an at risk car for target theft or accident. I emailed Adrian flux I it islay and gave them a full list of all modifications I wanted to make, from led side bulbs (not like replacement) through to parking sensors, window blinds, egr bypass etc. They came back and told me if it can be removed on a flash (I. E. The window blinds) they would note them but had no impact, same for the dash droid. Otherwise things like the LED Bulbs they made a note of also but needed to know and the egr block was important too, one affected light output from factory and the other could impact power output. Your better telling them everything for them not to care than to miss one which writes off your insurance claim. Don't tell them now that you have changed a grill and you could think nothing of it, but if you hit a merc slk or similar and the insurers can void your claim your in the smelly stuff with the police. GMX
When I spoke to LV, they said the same as Alex and James, replacement like for like part is not a mod even when it's not an OE part. They went on to say, an accessory that can be removed without tools they wouldn't need to know about (sun blinds, Brandy's dog crate, rubber boot cover) but anything fitted, even when it's an OE upgrade, that needed tools to remove it, needs to be declared (Brandy's bespoke ventilation system, upgraded DAB Nav stereo)
jack172sp
With Brentacre, visual mods don't need to be declared but anything which affects the performance of the car does.
jeebowhite
I can only echo GMX, further to my rule of thumb with his point about tools required for installation. Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
Figgis41
When i had my dash cam fitted i asked my insurer (Octagon) if this was a Mod, the lady said yes if its hard wired which mine was, she asked details of the dash cam, then details of who and how it was fitted. I gave them the name of the garage i use as its a ford specialist garage, then details of how its fully surge protected and is running of a piggy back fuse of my ignition etc, they seemed all right with this and there was not price difference to my insurance. jeebowhite
Dashcams will almost always be a permitted modification, regardless of insurer. Some insurers offer discounts for certain models of dashcam, not sure why it's only those as most are rubbish in comparison to other cheaper models which so the job better. that said they only offer discounts or permit it because if they know you have one fitted and after an 'who's to blaim' if you don't offer the footage they know it's likely you, and if you do then it's likely to be the other party Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
DAN@ADRIAN FLUX
Hi, I'd be really surprised if any insurer would actually load the premium for a dash cam but stranger things have happened! Just to let you know that a number of our schemes do give discounts for a wide range of in-car cameras. I would always recommend you tell your insurer of any changes to the vehicle however minor just to be on the safe side. Regards, Dan. I'm with Adrian Flux for insurance and I will be getting a new car part way through my current insurance. I've purchased a Nextbase 312GW dashcam, will I get a discount when I change my car over? It is certainly worth mentioning when you change your car over. It depends what scheme you are on and which underwriter you are with. If you wanted to PM me your policy details I'd be happy to check for you. Dan

laumk7
I've declared everything to the insurers , no slipping away if there's ever a claim to be made that way
