Grinding when starting

When I start in the morning for the last few days I turn the key as normal and it attempts to start but there is a grinding noise like a screech! .. horrible noise. I tried a few more times then it starts no noise.

I leave the car for an hour come back a slight squeal but fires up. 

Is this a sign of starter motor failure looming ?

Is this home fixable on a drive way ?

squeal as in a loose or worn aux belt if not then it could be a sign the starters on its way out

A dicky starter motor usually grinds as it fails to start, tap it with a bar of hammer the next time it does it, might take a good few whacks but if it starts OK then it is a good possible culprit.
