Gxorge
Hi, I'm currently looking at getting a 2014 Fiesta ST. I have found a reasonable priced one on autotrader which is not too far either. I'm hoping to have a look this weekend and need some advice and what to look out for when buying a used car. For example i can see the brakes have some rust on it but it has only done 16000 miles so would the brakes last for another 10000 miles can you tell if the brakes are about to go? dave_k
Take a decent in-the-know car person with you to give it a check over and too check the cars history/paperwork/previous circumstances/finance/hpi etc. Shouldn't be too many issues with the age and mileage but that obviously depends on the dealer selling it. Should still be under warranty etc too.
pompeydave1967
Difficult to say without looking at it , my ecoboost has rust on discs when left over night after a car wash. soon goes after driving so probably car has stood still for a short time only. dave1987
That's the 1.6 Ecoboost engine which I have in my focus. Check the clutch and DMF, despite the low mileage. I had the clutch replaced under warranty (13k) because it juddered when hot. Following replacement and again when hot, on a hill start I get 'clutch whoop', a low frequency noise. Now I believe I've got a clunking DMF (again, only evident when hot on engine start and when engaging drive). I'm careful with my cars, mechanically sympathetic and its only done 27k. I could be unlucky and ford could have ironed out these issues on a 2014 model (mines 2012) but do check! Aside, the engine is a cracker and has been totally reliable so far. CREED
Common faults to check for: 1. Illuminated scuff plates often half fail so only one part lights up 2. Rear brake caliper pins seize up 3. Rattles from interior trim - not really much you can do about this tough It is worth getting a garage to check the brakes as the pads and discs can wear down very quickly. Garage near me had a guy needing a new set of from discs with just 17K on the clock. Also check the alloys for damage as Rado grey is hard colour to get hold of if they need repairing. I'm not aware of any common major issues at all. Other than that check for daft stuff. Does it have the ST floor mats (label on back should say ST). If it has a satnav check that the SD card is there. My discs have rust when left in rain for 12 hours so don't worry about that.
SpannerTheCat
All good advice above but without a doubt get a HPI Check https://hpicheck.com/ It'll tell you if it's been an Insurance write-off,if it's ever been reported stolen, has any outstanding finance, any number plate changes,a VIN check & much more with a £30,000 guarantee,it'll be the best £19.99 you'll ever spend. Also see if the Dealer will MOT it next year & cover the cost if anything needs doing but have it in writting though.

E5GDM
Discs are made from iron so you only have to wash the car for them to go rusty in a matter of minutes, its perfectly normal & will come off the first time you brake.

I was fuming not only was i about £40 down but a further £6.00 or so down cause of the texted service i used that was incorrect, so i rang the company straight away and after about 15mins in the queue at 0890 number the lady said that they cannot guarantee there checks there simply a guide line to the vehicles past history and then said they use an independent company to do the checks and they are not responsible for any information that is incorrect WTF!!!!!!! then i said that in there terms and conditions that is states they i was covered for upto £10,000 against wrong information? she replied that is only applicable to using our premium HPI check which is a platinum check and it costs £29.99. I thought im not having this so i said well the car i checked was in fact HPi clear but your company stated that in fact it was a stolen car !!! she said that the details held were details from there 3rd party supplier and cannot explain why these checks were incorrect!! i then basically hung up to avoid any more out of pocket expenses it left a sour taste in my mouth for many hours and days after. Then i can understand that it is just has easy to say the car is a write off or stolen just to put themselves in the clear, in return they make £2.99 each time and don't actually hold any responsibility for the service they provide!! 99% of people just take the information about the car and move on maybe end up going to the stealership to buy a car, just like to know how they get away with it ? A lesson to be learnt if your paying for something that sounds to good to be true more than likely is... Use a reputable company like the AA or HPI.co.uk or similar not some cowboy company :( '' It's the old story of you get what you pay for,i'll keep paying HPI my £19.99 for 100% protection
