MK2.5 1,6 Zetec TIMING BELT

OK fellas the time has come to do the Timing belt change. I have the mk2.5 1,6 zetec model and plan to go to ford next month to buy the timing belt kit and the water pump as well to fit all at the one go. At the moment I am just gather up things I will require to make this job easier for myself. Its been years since I have done a timing belt but I willing to give it a go.

 

I know Darren did his timing belt a while back on his diesel focus, so any pointers would be great here if you have time to have a read here.

 

I am thinking about picking up the following tools first:

will this be of help to me in this job and off hand does anyone know what the size of the crank bolt is? My 1/2 inch socket set is missing bits and bobs so may need to pick up a new socket to fit that or else I will have to try the 3/8 sockets on it and a breaker bar or my 3/8 cordless impact wrench. I also need to pick up a decent torque wrench to get all tightened up properly after all is installed so will be on the look out there as well.

 

so any body done one on this engine and any tips are welcomed.

Also I might try to get a guide with some pictures up here when Im doing it as it may help others out at somepoint, I think the focus guides are missing timeing belt pdf guides so hopefully we can get one made and put up.

I've done several on the 1.6 petrol.

the tools you have listed are correct. make sure you get new cam and crank bolts. 

IIRC the crank bolt is 18mm

Hey, get some chalk, mark the exiting belt on specific teeth on the cam and crank sprocket or anything else with teeth. mark the new belt in the same way then use them marks to line it up.

If the cam and crank are locked then the only thing that can go wrong is the wrong number of teeth between them.

and the water pump gasket, make sure that's fully removed, when mine came off it left bits all over the place, a small Stanley blade was useful.

Good luck, mine wasn't nearly as hard as I thought, just lots of small steps.

Using chalk is incorrect, the cam sprockets should be loosened off and bolts replaced in order to achieve 'perfect' timing.

using chalk and you will need more than a timing belt.

I dont doubt you or anything I'm just curious to know why that is?

If the cam and crank are locked and cant move, and the belt is put on with more teeth to one side wouldn't it naturally fall out of alignment? which I assumed was why you then rotate it a few turns then try and lock it again to make sure its spot on, if doesn't lock then the belt isn't on right....

Thanks guys for all the information there, I will start getting together the tools next week. 

 

Stefan I was planning on getting all new bolts just to be safe as I think I read they are stretch bolts so have to be renewed. Does the whole timing kit from ford include these bolts or do they have to be ordered separate?

I'm not entirely sure what comes in a genuine ford kit as I tend to use parts from local factors, Ford stuff I normally get Dayco

Really? I have a 2010 same engine/power at 63k and I was told the belt didn't have to be done until 100k.

it's officially 8 years or 100k whichever comes first.

I know load of people with 1.6 Zetec, I have never known a belt go. Next door neighbour has same as mine but 2006, has never replaced cambelt and now says it's not worth the cost! I may hold out for next year, 

I think I may be slightly premature.

hi Darren, on your 1.6tdci the crank sprocket is keyed into the crank with a woodruff key so you know where the crank is, on the 1.25,1.4 and 1.6 petrol the crank sprocket is not keyed to crank, and as soon as the crank pulley bolt is removed then the bottom sprocket freely moves independent to crank.so yes your right with a bit of chalk etc on yours and the 1.8 tdci timing belt it is possible

I've just checked etis and mine's the 1.6 Duratec/Sigma, not Zetec. Does that change the cam-belt interval?

What's the opinion on the reliability of these engines?

That's my engine too, I bought it because:

It's really old!

Tried and tested

Tax cost a fortune and it's noisy, is the downside.

Thanks for that Adam, I agree re the tax, £230 !! Auto box...

I don't find my engine particularly noisy, just wind noise around the bodywork/windows at 60+ mph

Stefan I'm just wondering would my 3/8 sealy socket set, sockets be ok to undo the crank bolt with a breaker bar? i have used this set for many years on all work on my previous cars with no issues but this is the first time on the timing belt, if not I will just invest in a 1/2 inch breaker and socket and a 1/2inch torque wrench, If you think the crank bolt is 18mm then it should be ok but just wanted your opinion before I spend any money :smile:

I really wouldn't be using 3/8 to undo the crank bolt, it does take a bit of oomph to undo even with a 600mm breaker bar.

Socket probably will break, sometimes they can be very tight , even a 1/2inch breaker bar isn't enough and an extension tube to give more leverage is required.

I thought as much, i have just ordered a new 1/2 socket set and a 1/2 Breaker bar so Hopefully that will be stronger than the 3/8 one lol! Thanks fellas I will keep this thread updated.

I leave the smashing and bashing to the youngsters now, I'm the more delicate end of work and problem solving , but as you know stef I have got a big stick with a lump of metal that comes out for special occasions
